Diablo III sells 3.5 million in 24 hours

First-day sales of Blizzard's dungeon-crawler make it "fastest-selling PC game" ever; first-week sales hit 6.3 million; "shatters" day-one sales records at Amazon.

Diablo III may have been long in the making, but it was quick to record success upon release last week. Blizzard Entertainment today announced that the hotly hyped dungeon crawler sold 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, with more than 6.3 million copies landing in gamers' hands during its first week. Sales of this magnitude make the title the "fastest-selling PC game" in history, according to Blizzard's figures.

Gamers marched to hell in droves.
Gamers marched to hell in droves.

Diablo III's first-day sales do not include the 1.2 million players who received Diablo III as part of the World of Warcraft annual pass promotion. Additionally, the game's first-week tally does not factor in players in Korean Internet game rooms, Blizzard said.

Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime praised the launch of Diablo III, but also noted the game went live amid some technical troubles.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," he said. "We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."

Upon release, Diablo III faced a string of issues, including a bug that made the game unplayable for some. Blizzard was quick to apologize for the game's rocky launch, saying last week that it did not do enough to ensure a smooth debut.

Diablo III was also a big success for major retailers. GameStop's senior vice president of merchandising said Diablo III was one of its "biggest PC launches ever." Additionally, Amazon director of video games John Love reiterated that Diablo III broke preorder PC records at the retailer, and noted it also "shattered" day-one sales milestones for a PC game.

What's next for Diablo III? The game launched without player-versus-player multiplayer support, which will be added at a later date. Additionally, the arrival of the game's real-money auction house was delayed from its originally planned launch.

@kozzy1234 I agree. While the game isn't perfect, it blows any other game I've played this gen out of the water.

@kozzy1234 10 is for perfection. I think a much fairer score for D3 is somewhere between 8.5 and 9.

@gix47 Starcraft 2 is clearly the most popular RTS, but it isn't big compared to the likes of WoW and Diablo 3.

ITT: People who played Single Player and LAN modes on Diablo 2 and didn't realize closed Battle.net there is EXACTLY the same as D3.

Also known as the irrelevant and small portion of players that Blizzard no longer cares about since they can still sell 6+ million copies of a game in 7 days.

Um, not it's not the same. I played D2 all the way through, start to finish on LAN/Coop with no internet connection.

@Landsharkk You clearly, PAINFULLY missed the part of my post where i said "closed Battle.net."

Diablo 2 is not the same as Diablo 3. But closed Battle.net D2 is pretty much the same as Diablo 3.

@Landsharkk @Richardthe3rd If you played D2 offline, I think you were one of the very few. That game was built for online co-op.

If a game has a single player option it should be able to be played off line no matter if it's not as good as online.Thats my point.

@williebazerka Ok, i'll put it another way. You, dude, missed out completely by playing offline. Worse gear, no ladder, no trading gear, and I'm not even going to get into the fact you had no Internet for other stuff.

The mind, it is boggled.

Good for Blizzard. D3 is amazing, DRM or not. Took a week off work to play it, loved every second! Now if I could keep from getting 1-shot in ACT 2 Inferno....

@BarkingSpider81 HA! I play a witch doctor, and I think it's time to go 1h and a shield. That and I think every piece of gear needs to have +vitality and +Resist to all. :) Farming the last part of ACT 1 inferno for the next week or two I presume!

And now they know that when they strap on their massive DRMs and bend us over, millions will them to do it. Congratulations on pushing gaming one step closer to the edge. 1983 CAN happen again if we let it.

210 milions in just one day?

Avengers are suppossed to be "record" box office smash hit - with 207 milions over the whole first weekend.

How is NOT gaming industry bigger and baddier than Hollywood?

The gaming industry takes in a lot more money than the movie/music industry combined every year.

@KarlosBog Keep in mind that a video game costs quite a bit more than a movie ticket.

To paraphrase Condescending Wonka:

"Diabolo III made $377,937,000 in seven days? Please, tell me more about how piracy and used video games are destroying the industry!"

@Gorakka I doubt it, because the game will continue to receive updates from Blizzard. This isn't you typical console game.

Online DRM for Diablo 3 isn't entirely about anti piracy, Actilizzard are well aware that the game will get hacked eventually. It's all about protecting the Auction Houses, especially the real money one.

It's very hard to train or cheat a character that's held server side but extremely easy to do it to a character held client side, like most games. How quick would the auction house economy collapse if you could have as much gold as you wanted at the press of a key?

I personally think they should have an offline mode and those characters have no interaction with characters held server side.

Well what if i chose to bomb the Diablo server rooms around the world. I'd be the biggest gaming criminal in the world for the 6.3 million that play this game.

I'm sorry, but that is tempting if we're gonna stick to a forced online game for something that should be playable offline with a Steam like offline mode (well you log in the servers first, then you keep credentials on your pc and play offline).

Well in Blizzard's defense, the online thing really helps in preventing cheating. If there's an inconsistency in items or gold: gotcha! Cheating was big time in Diablo 2 and items, skill points and experience were being modified with trainers to ruin the experience.
