Diablo III sells 3.5 million in 24 hours

First-day sales of Blizzard's dungeon-crawler make it "fastest-selling PC game" ever; first-week sales hit 6.3 million; "shatters" day-one sales records at Amazon.

Diablo III may have been long in the making, but it was quick to record success upon release last week. Blizzard Entertainment today announced that the hotly hyped dungeon crawler sold 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, with more than 6.3 million copies landing in gamers' hands during its first week. Sales of this magnitude make the title the "fastest-selling PC game" in history, according to Blizzard's figures.

Gamers marched to hell in droves.
Gamers marched to hell in droves.

Diablo III's first-day sales do not include the 1.2 million players who received Diablo III as part of the World of Warcraft annual pass promotion. Additionally, the game's first-week tally does not factor in players in Korean Internet game rooms, Blizzard said.

Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime praised the launch of Diablo III, but also noted the game went live amid some technical troubles.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," he said. "We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."

Upon release, Diablo III faced a string of issues, including a bug that made the game unplayable for some. Blizzard was quick to apologize for the game's rocky launch, saying last week that it did not do enough to ensure a smooth debut.

Diablo III was also a big success for major retailers. GameStop's senior vice president of merchandising said Diablo III was one of its "biggest PC launches ever." Additionally, Amazon director of video games John Love reiterated that Diablo III broke preorder PC records at the retailer, and noted it also "shattered" day-one sales milestones for a PC game.

What's next for Diablo III? The game launched without player-versus-player multiplayer support, which will be added at a later date. Additionally, the arrival of the game's real-money auction house was delayed from its originally planned launch.

Good look to those 3.5 million of people, and the many millions to come. Thank you for supporting anti-consumer practices.

@aj_marquez I am no fanboy. Im just point out that you as someone who is clearly a fanboy of Valve (your icon) should look a little closer to home. In order to play a game offline in Steam you have to have an online connection first for it to gather the relevant info, otherwise it wont work. Its pretty much the same as requiring online connection to play.

@flyingfireball

I think that you're right in a sense.

BUT, once you turned to offline mod, you don't need to be connected to the net to play your installed games. This is in contrast to Blizzard case (or Ubisoft), in which you must be constanly connected to play the game.

I think this is a huge diffrence.

Yes, Steam is some kind of DRM, but in my view it is the best solution out there. I doubt this service will go down any time soon and I'm putting my faith with Valve.

@aj_marquez Yes it does require you to be online initally to set it up, try discnonection from the internet then turning on offline mode. Unless its changed that is the system it uses. And if you fail to see the link between half-life and Valve then I really dont understand how you think you have an argument. I was being intentionally judging because you inferred that because I didn't agree I must be an irrational fanboy. For the record I like HL. And I was replying to you.

@flyingfireball Sigh, first you were not answering to me, read better. Second, my avatar is not Valve's or Steam's logo, so your argument is kind of pointless. The fact I like Half-Life (and, more than that, greek alphabet) does not make me a Valve fanboy.

I'll tell you what Steam does, though: It does sell you digital copies of games, which they can take back the moment they shut the servers down.

I'll also tell you what they do not do: They do not force you to be online to play a single player game, or to play at all. Try it, Steam has offline mode and it does NOT need you to be online first to run.

@fatee @bonzibuddyxxx @Lox_Cropek Day one, but pirates could only crack the game levels, not the items or enemies.
