Diablo III sells 3.5 million in 24 hours

First-day sales of Blizzard's dungeon-crawler make it "fastest-selling PC game" ever; first-week sales hit 6.3 million; "shatters" day-one sales records at Amazon.

Diablo III may have been long in the making, but it was quick to record success upon release last week. Blizzard Entertainment today announced that the hotly hyped dungeon crawler sold 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, with more than 6.3 million copies landing in gamers' hands during its first week. Sales of this magnitude make the title the "fastest-selling PC game" in history, according to Blizzard's figures.

Gamers marched to hell in droves.
Gamers marched to hell in droves.

Diablo III's first-day sales do not include the 1.2 million players who received Diablo III as part of the World of Warcraft annual pass promotion. Additionally, the game's first-week tally does not factor in players in Korean Internet game rooms, Blizzard said.

Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime praised the launch of Diablo III, but also noted the game went live amid some technical troubles.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," he said. "We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."

Upon release, Diablo III faced a string of issues, including a bug that made the game unplayable for some. Blizzard was quick to apologize for the game's rocky launch, saying last week that it did not do enough to ensure a smooth debut.

Diablo III was also a big success for major retailers. GameStop's senior vice president of merchandising said Diablo III was one of its "biggest PC launches ever." Additionally, Amazon director of video games John Love reiterated that Diablo III broke preorder PC records at the retailer, and noted it also "shattered" day-one sales milestones for a PC game.

What's next for Diablo III? The game launched without player-versus-player multiplayer support, which will be added at a later date. Additionally, the arrival of the game's real-money auction house was delayed from its originally planned launch.

Luckily, a large number of people have ALWAYS been unsatisfied with the Diablo franchise, and Blizzard keeps making them. Diablo 1 was received with some apprehension in its day, many critics used its inventory system and ultra-simplified play style as primary weaknesses. I believe it received some flak over its graphics engine too, but nowhere near as much as did Diablo 2. Diablo 2 was given a lukewarm reception even by diehard Diablo fans, as it threw many aspects of the tried-and-true formula to the wind.

And here we are over a decade later, getting the third reinvention of the same brilliant game, and people are whining about the exact same things. Except now that most people have broadband, and they decided battle.net (the method many if not most people used to play the previous games) would be the ONLY way to play, it went from being one of the things people loved the most about the game to something people love to complain about.

Sales doesn't mean much, when a big part ( and I mean REALLY BIG part) of their customers are/were unsatisfied with this game...

Just was curious and was watching on YouTube a video about a Barbarian "solo" kill an apparently very hard boss. Player started with showing his skill set, gear and stats. When i saw the part where he said "Currently I have 28.000+ damage..." I just skipped to some other video about something else from sidebar.Thanks.

@Legrieme The Truth of Gaming: Every game designer wishes they could be the one to make a game like Diablo. The truth of the entire world: Business is a cutthroat thing, as are all human endeavors, and communism has never been shown to be an egalitarian form of government. So give it a rest with your ridiculous avatar, unless you are in fact a member of the communist party in a country where that is actually considered desirable.

@Eraldus WoW requires online connection too. Diablo 3 is primarily a multiplayer-oriented game. You can almost say that it's a pseudo-WoW.

The internet connection thing is bloody annoying, but wasn't really aware of it until after purchased the game. It did frustrate me somewhat, but I actually have found I don't mind knowing when my friends are playing, or hopping in and out of games. Even so, I love the game. It's nostalgic bliss, neat and simple. I bought it because it was the 3rd installment of Diablo, and it turns out, it is a Diablo game. Didn't really lose much on that investment really.

People take actions when it's too late. It starts with online only single player experience, in a few years you will be paying monthly charges for every game that you will be renting for it will be online play through streaming like them java/flash crappy games. Only then will you be whining and boycotting such games, but it will be to late. I feel ashamed to say MOST gamers are stupid, ignorant, with no principles and morals. Sometimes I wonder why I'm not into the whole LMFAO/lady gaga/hip hop thing, why I'm not into blingblings, into cars, why I don't like to watch sports that I don't even practice on tv, why I'm not into them mobile smart phones with those useless apps, why I think Facebook is a waste of time, why I don't drive a truck guzzling gas instead of driving my economic car, why I'm not into reality tv, and why I'm not buying games from companies that want to screw me and remove my freedom. Where did you get your lobotomy guys? Or did you all stuck crayons up your nose like Homer?

@xolivierx Dear friend,

Its not just about Stoping piracy, online registration gives a "legitimation" to whoever gets the game, there will be (probably) no private servers running diablo3, its basically pointless, Blizzard did it for profit, not control, You're talking about a north american game, A liberal society, they will never take leash on their users, liberty above all else, and profit above all else...

@xolivierx How depressing are you. Stop complaining at everything and enjoy your life. Whether YOU buy diablo 3 or not won't change anything, one person wil never change anything. So if you enjoy it just buy it because your grievances with this game are going unheard over the millions of people who are enjoying and just getting on with their life.

@xolivierx Wow, do you actually LIKE anything? I am not into anything you mentioned there (with a few exceptions), but I don't go on about it. I have a few friends like you, and they are cynical bastards. And if we don't put a stop to the cynical bastards, they will turn into full blown zealots. Then we will all be whining that we didn't stop them at the cynical bastard stage.

No reason why this game can't be ported to PS3. If the cell can run GOW3, it can run Diablow 3.

@nousername66 devs just dont want to create a custom code for cell processor, it way to time consuming.

Matter a fact, D3 dont even need to run on the cell processor. Even a 18SP could even the WOW graphics.

@y3ivan @nousername66 Actually its a control issue, hence why WASD can;t be used to play this game on PC. Using your analog stick to move you need a seperate cursor to deploy spells as key locations on the screen. That being said if you plugged a mouse and keyboard into a ps3 it would work but how many people are going to want to do that,.

i doubt control is the case here since torchlight made its way to console a year ago, which pretty much has the same experience as the PC without the hassle of clickfest.

You still fail to see the point. You confuse "eliminating" piracy with maximizing profitability. If a process reduced overhead, loss of revenue, piracy and/or increases revenue by any percentage at all, you do it. It's business 101. (You might consider taking a business course in college as it will open an entirely new way that you look at business and capitalism). Digital distribution drastically reduces piracy, re-sales, overhead etc… and therefor systems like online authentication, DD etc... not will, but ARE becoming mainstream. You will always have a percentage of the public that gets around certain securities, but that’s not the point. If piracy for a product can be reduced from 3.2% loss of revenue to only 1.2% loss of revenue (as an example) then that system is worth being implemented as obviously the increased revenue outweighs the cost if implementation. For example, we have a product on the market that was launched years ago and to this day, we are very aware of exactly how much piracy takes place on this product and where the sources are. We have always evaluated the “cost” from loss of revenue versus the time required to pursue said resources or what percentage of the pirating demographic would have purchased the product if the free copy wasn’t available (most pirates on certain products wouldn’t buy anyway). We have been perfectly happy with a 2% annual loss based on illegal replication but if there is something we can do in the future to knock that down to 1%, you can be darn sure we’re doing it. Never forget, it’s BUSINESS, nothing more.

never bought a diablo game, don't think i ever will. Looks kinda boring with hack/slash and item whoring. Still waiting on SC2 HOS, just praying they don't apply this DRM sh*t with that game as well.

Oh, and for all the gamers say boycot because of DRM...I agree with you, but i also say to you: it's hopeless. Just look at COD, everybody knows it's trash and say don't buy, but it's the best selling game. Casuals and big corporations have taken over gaming. Get over it or find a new hobby. I'm still deciding on which myself, lol

Actually yes, except it won't be DVDs; it will be authenticated through your account on digital distribution which is already occurring (Netflix, Fios, iTunes etc...). DVD pirating is a huge issue which is yet another reason why digital media will replace physical media. Our partner company is a film/TV production company and we fight DVD and Bluray pirating all of the time.

Who cares. I actually think web varification is a good idea and so far it's working great. This is a huge step forward for anti-piracy which is the point. Don't blame EA, blame all of the people that rip PC games off of the web. In fact, some of our software in our production company ($1,800+ programs) are constant online varification as well. It's about time that video games caught up.

@kindredmachine Was cracked and had emulated servers within days. In fact, despite me owning the game, I have a full different install to play on them because Battle.Net is always going down, or ridiculously laggy. It did nothing to prevent piracy. It did everything to help their Real Money Auction House.

Dam Sheep...Keep buying games from companies like this and you will ensure we will continue to get the pineapple up the kazoo with each new release.

Their business practice will not change unless gamers take a stand.

@souljacker47 Did you ever think that the huge sales might mean that most gamers just really don't mind these business practices? That they're really NOT getting a "pineapple," as you put it? Maybe there's nothing to take a stand over at all.

@maxwell97 @souljacker47 If you look at the amazon ratings on this game you will see most of the people that bought it are not happy. I know that is a small sampling, but forcing someone to have a persistent internet connection to play a game they spent $60 on is ridiculous. My point is, the only way to get a company to change such tactics is not to buy....The huge sales were pre-orders and people who were unaware of this problem...I would hate to buy a game for $60 and be dependent on the company's servers in order to play it. To me, that isn't fair to the gamer.

@souljacker47 I respectfully disagree. I think PC gamers generally are connected and just don't mind the requirement to be connected. This kind of reminds me of when Steam got going - lots of people worried about online authentication and cd keys, now 8 years later it's just part of the deal. If it were a big issue, WoW would never have sold so many copies. And I'm sure the amazon ratings were trolled just like the metacritic ratings. On metacritic the user reviews were something like 3.2 within an hour of when they'd let people post reviews; the average has been moving upwards as people who've actually PLAYED the game start posting reviews.
