Disgaea Infinite US-bound this May

"Adventure novel" spin-off of strategy series casts players as Prinny protagonist searching for a would-be assassin.

The Disgaea series of strategy role-playing games continues to expand its horizons. Nippon Ichi Software America today confirmed that it will be introducing the franchise to a new genre this May, when it releases a localized version of the "adventure novel" PSP game Disgaea Infinite in North America.

Etna and the rest of the original Disgaea gang will return for the spin-off.
Etna and the rest of the original Disgaea gang will return for the spin-off.

In Disgaea Infinite, players will take on the role of a Prinny, a demonic penguin-like servant in the thrall of original series protagonist Laharl. When an assassination attempt on Laharl is foiled, the young demon lord orders the player to uncover who is responsible. As the Prinny, players can use a magical clock to inhabit other characters' minds and piece together the assassination puzzle in the process.

This is not the first time Nippon Ichi has dedicated a spin-off Disgaea game to the Prinnies. Last year, the publisher released the side-scrolling action game Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? for the PSP. That game launched to a glowing critical reception and was nominated for Best PSP Game, Funniest Game, and Best Boss Fights (a category that it won) in GameSpot's Best of 2009 awards.

Disgaea will forever be a classic. Disgaea 3 was waaaayy funnier but the story of Disgaea: HoD had the complete package of humor, dialogue and plot.

Got all excited for a new Disgaea.... ....and got really disappointed when it turned out to be an adventure novel.

Always thought that Disgaea has a likable basic system (yeah I'm a grinder :D) but it's just depressing to play a 40+ hour game that tries to be funny with almost every line and never actually makes me laugh. 90% flat humour, 10% decent jokes.

I have always enjoyed the story and character development for Disgaea but never cared for all the heavy grind focus of gameplay. I tell myself "This time it will be different, I will grind my characters and gear to awesomeness" Then I try to do it and get bored silly. Repetitive tasks are just that repetitive. Even so I still love the Disgaea universe and when it features the spunky Etna it just makes it that much better : )

Prince Larharl is making a return, this should be fun :D. Always did like his way of doing things ("We're not petty thieves....Loot the place !")

Anyways, I liked the first two Disgaeas, but was greatly disappointed with the third. (The reason being that it was a PS3 debut which probably could have been done on the PS2, and considering that it was one of the final reasons I had for buying a PS3 AT THE TIME I was so hyped up for the game... But I digress.) I enjoyed Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero. I am sure I will enjoy this too.

Probably one of the few franchises I like for its story, characters, and charm (well, except the second). Battle system and RPG mechanics haven't aged too well, but at least a deserving franchise is earning the praise it deserves.

It would be nice if they take some time off after this one and plan to improve the graphics and change the mechanics up a bit for the next game. I loved the original game back on PS2, but I'm sure people are sick of looking at the same familiar character artwork.

Disgaea for psp was the first I had ever played and I absolutely loved it, since then I got Disgaea 3 and loved it just as much. This is really exciting news and I can't wait. Gives me a reason to dust off my psp.

@kiramasaki If you are playing Disgaea on the DS. Just one word; MAP. Once you have already beaten the game on the console, then the need for Japanese voice overs becomes negligible.

why would you want to play a console game on a handheld, unless you dont have the ps3 or ps2, unless there are some really phenomenal features, it makes no sense.

@TongLong While searching for secrets in Disgaea 3 for PS3, I found a video, a commercial/early trailer or what not explaining so. It made me really angry...

Screw this, Nippon. You released Disgaea 3 for the PS3, and now you plan to release Disgaea 3 for the PSP with more features.... What the hell?

It's a shame that wacky variants of the already-wacky series rest to the PSP alone, but given the massive PSP market in Japan I at least understand how it's a much safer (and cheaper) thing to make than a monster console version. Disgaea 2 PSP was about 4 months ago for Japan, I think, so it hasn't been terribly long considering the localization on the first was 11 months (having just checked that one).
