Disney's Diablo-Style Game, Marvel Heroes, Shuts Down Soon

Marvel Heroes won't be around for much longer.

Update: The official Twitter account for Marvel Heroes has shared a message from the development team announcing the shutdown. It states that servers will remain online through the end of the year, shutting down after December 31, 2017. Additionally, the ability to spend real-world money in-game will be removed "as soon as possible." It states, "Players will be able to play the game entirely for free once this sunset period commences. We will share the exact date things go completely free as soon as we can." The tweet also goes on to thank the community and employees for their support over the years. The original story follows.

Marvel Heroes, the free-to-play, Diablo-esque action game, is shutting down. Marvel announced the news today, revealing it has ended its business arrangement with developer Gazillion Entertainment.

Now Playing: Marvel Heroes Omega - Official Launch Trailer

In a statement shared with GameSpot, Marvel Entertainment stated, "We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available." This presumably applies to the PC version of the game (first released in 2013) and the Omega versions fully released on PS4 and Xbox One earlier this year. We've followed up with the company to find out more about the timeline for the game's shutdown.

No Caption Provided

No further explanation was shared for the decision. Kotaku, which first reported the news, notes that updates and communications from Gazillion have been absent recently. A current and former employee told the site that some people were told to not come into work this week, so it appears this move has been brewing for some time.

As noted above, Marvel Heroes is an action-RPG in the mold of Diablo, but with a free-to-play business model. It features a wide variety of Marvel characters, with players able to obtain everyone from the Avengers to the Guardians of the Galaxy to Inhumans. We'll report back as we learn more about how Marvel is handling the shutdown.

...Man I'd have be all over this game if it was singleplayer/local multiplayer like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and not a crazy expensive cashgrab MMO. Hell, I'd probably have bought the game when I first saw it if that were the case.

Yeah, this is a bummer. I had tried this game a few years ago but was turned off by the microtransactions in it.

I put a little $$ into this game (War Machine anyone) awesome char. I put several hours into the game and this is what I get (Cancelled like a (place expletive here) stamp. I might sound like a little B**** but all this "Hey try our game sink some money into it! Ssshhhh then we'll shut it down"! This s*** is criminal! and they ought to be held accountable! Gaming in general is becoming corrupt. Yeah I'm on a rant so what! I'm glad I kept my PS2=buy game=play game=enjoy game=play again if you wish, and the earlier x360/PS3 days. Of course the OG Xbox and Halo CE 2001. Where's my time machine lol. My point is, they need to buck up and offer a partial refund AT LEAST!! certainly make my pocket feel a little better. Call me a Grumpy Old Gamer I could give 2 s***'s. Take the whole Gaming plethora back to basics, back to the cornerstone and rebuild! "Make Gaming Great Again"!

P.S. I don't usually comment but this is straight Bull s***. I've had my cup of rage this morning back to RL.

Y'all Have it =)

I never played it, but it's sad to see this game dissolve into the ether. It's sad to see any game shut down that can no longer be played by people in the future. This is why I'm not really a fan of "games as a service." What kind of shit is that really? Books, movies, music... all of it can be enjoyed, provided at least one original copy is maintained, but "games" like Marvel Heroes, they shut down and disappear. What's worse is that there are probably people who are just now starting, spending money and not even realizing that they won't be able to play it for much longer.

They make it sound like they aren't gonna give users any time to pack up even. Is it ALREADY shut down? That's unprecedented bull.

Thank God I only spent 10$ on this game and got everything else for free.

This sucks, though. They really made that a fun game that I enjoyed going back to sometimes. Damn.

Didn't this just come out on consoles too? Weird.

Let's port it to consoles, they said. It'll be a good idea, they said. It literally killed the game. Way to go, morons!

Considering how terrible the "biggest update ever" was, how much backlash their was, how many people quit (including myself), I'm not actually that surprised.

They killed the game, like SWG was killed in its revamp.

Still to this day developers just don't learn.

I'm sad. It was a damn good game prior to the update, but afterward.. just depressing.

RIP. Maybe another company who actually cares will take it over.

@DAOWAce: I've heard a rumor that Marvel/Disney MAY shop it around, but that's all it is at this point. As for reasons why, my understanding is it MAY not be just due to game performance, as anyone who's been on the forums or reddit page for the game would already know. Apparently there were some.... issues... with the leadership at Gazillion that the Disney is trying to distance itself from. That's all I'm going to say since I'm not sure I CAN say any more.

We've (the community) been waiting for this for over a month now. I, for one, am glad it's finally official. Really sucks to see it go, though - after spring 2015, it got SO good... but then the original devs, including David Brevik, started leaving and it was all downhill from there. Lost vision, half-assed updates, gutting the uniqueness of the characters and systems that worked for across the line homogenization... wow.

*pours out a lil' liquor for the game that was*

Wasn't really half bad as a Legends/Alliance successor. The main problem came from the controls feeling too tight, a gross excess of stats, and all the fun being sucked out of the game once you stopped gaining new powers roughly around the halfway point of the campaign. After that it was all about replaying the same dry missions again to farm gear. And, yes, the F2P crap.

They rejig the assets into a singleplayer/co-op game though and rebalance it to be more fluid like the original games, this could still be fun. It already plays like the original games just fine, so it's hardly dependent on the online stuff. Surprised you don't see more failing F2P games do that.

This is why you'd be a fool to spend money on these free to play games. Inevitably, the entire game gets yanked and everything you bought is down the drain.

@greaseman1985: I'm not going to lie, this did take me by surprise because I thought it was doing very well. I did play this for like a month, but stopped because othwr games came out. But that's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but never spent money on it either. Regardless it is f2p and microtransactions, so it suits the game because there's no p2w (as far as I know. It does suck that people lost their jobs though. That is never a good thing no matter how much I feel about a game.

@alucardswrath: Same, I haven't actually played it in a while but I put in a lot of hours into it. I think I spent 5 or 10 bucks on it to unlock a character, so to me that's more than worth it for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it. I've spent far more on non f2p games that I played a lot less.
