Disney's New Aladdin Trailer Gives Will Smith's Genie More Time To Shine

A whole new Will.

The first full trailer for Aladdin is here. The movie is one of three live-action adaptations of classic animated Disney movies due in 2019 and it's set to hit theaters in May. While a short teaser was screened during the Super Bowl in January, this is the first proper look we've had at the movie.

The new trailer lays out the plot, which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the 1992 original. A street boy named Aladdin (Mena Massoud) discovers a magical lamp, which conjures a singing, dancing, wise-cracking genie (Will Smith). The genie grants him three wishes, with which he sets about wooing Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and avoiding the evil Jafar (Marwan Kenzari). It's packed with action, romance, and classic Aladdin songs--check it out above and then head to our Aladdin trailer comparison to see how this footage looks alongside the comparable shots from the original.

Now Playing: Disney's Aladdin - Official Trailer

The movie is directed by Sherlock Holmes's Guy Ritchie and releases on May 24. When the first trailer screened in January, the response to Smith's muscular all-blue genie definitely caused a mixed reaction. However, this new trailer suggests that it might be kept a minimum, with Smith appearing in many scenes in a more 'human' guise.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith talked about taking on the role of the Genie, which was famously played by Robin Williams in the classic 1992 animated movie. "Whenever you're doing things that are iconic, it's always terrifying," he said. "The question is always: Where was there meat left on the bone? Robin didn't leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character.

"[But] I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different. Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete."

Aladdin is just one of several classic fairy tale remakes that Disney has on the way. Tim Burton's reimagining of Dumbo hits theaters later this month, while a new version of The Lion King arrives in July. Beyond that, the remake of Mulan is scheduled for 2020, plus movies based on Cruella De Ville (101 Dalmations) and Tinker Bell (Peter Pan) are reportedly also in development.

I am looking forward to it. Loved the cartoon. Kinda sad that Mr Smith won’t be blue all the time.

Why do all these marvel and disney live-action movies look so fake and cheap? I mean, everything looks artificially lit like a made-for-tv movie. It completely takes me out of the element.

The only reason I liked the first Aladdin was because of Robin Williams, no Robin Williams no sale. Not that it's going to make any difference, I'm sure this movie is going to make a ton of cash.

am I the only one that think will smith as "genie" is disturbing? I never liked Disney Animations but I much rather see Animations then some one painted all blue or trying to look like a character from animation.

This main reason I against any anima being turned in to a movie. it cant be dont with out it looking ridiculous, forget about the fact they like to take to many liberates with the source material.

@jeezers: so did other Disney vets. Treasure planet and the princess and the frog were attempts at getting audiences interested in hand drawn animation and they flopped. They’ll still make em (Winnie the Pooh for example) but don’t expect a comeback any time soon.

@jeezers: Me too. I don't like the Dreamworks-esque CG animated movies that they've gotten in the habit of doing.

I know it's "cool" to rag on Disney and all but I think a lot of people will really enjoy this, maybe even be emotionally touched, and to that I applaud their efforts.

I don't think the idea of there being so many remakes of classic animated films will ever sit well with me, especially with how half-assed the previous ones have been... but I'll admit, this trailer makes the movie look quite a bit better than the teasers did. I can say it looks kinda' fun, based on the trailer.

Very doubtful that it will reach the quality of the original, for sure, but a Disney remake being genuinely enjoyable, even if it's only a little bit, is a big step up from their last few remakes.

@masterfrankgrimes: Flailing? If Marvel making billions is 'flailing', christ, I can only imagine the standards you must have for something to be considered 'prospering'.

Or, more likely, you think Hollywood is 'flailing' in the same way the Big Orange Creep thinks the NYT is 'failing'. In short - you're not great at thinking.

@masterfrankgrimes: The only ones who think the movie industry is failing are conservatives who want those they disagree with fail and because they have been fed nonstop rubbish about "the evil hollywood coastal elites". All the while they will still keep going to watch the same movies they complain about lol.

Also, the movie industry is booming by every margin except for viewership of certain award shows.

But hey, wanting the destruction of the livelihood of thousands involved in the biz, that's mature and thoughtful of you.

@im_a_big_db: Hollywood has been whitewashing movies for about a hundred years now without any rioting, so they should still be safe.

@alastor529: As there should be. Who wants to see white actors in Asian roles, I mean the performances are typically awful anyway. P.S. Ghost in the Shell 2017 would have been a lot better off with more Asian actors.

Bollywood is so much hindi so I expect to see hindi in a bollywood film, or chinese cinema etc.

there just movies, people need to not let these stupid things affect them.

@alastor529: Part of me agrees with you, while the other part knows that letting the right people know how you feel about these issues can bring forth changes.

If a massively popular, and powerful company like Disney can go from making animated mammy archetypes, jive talking crows, and bucktoothed Siamese cats to the racial inclusiveness that we have today, then heck any company's long-standing way of doing these things can force corporations to think first, but it takes peoples voices to be heard loud and clear.
