Doctor Who Star Jodie Whittaker To Leave After Next Season – Report

Whittaker has played the Timelord in the long-running sci-fi show since 2018.

The annual holiday special of the BBC's long-running sci-fi show Doctor Who screened last week, and Season 13 of the show is due later in 2021. However, it has been reported that this might be the final season for current star Jodie Whittaker.

The news comes via the UK newspaper the Mirror, which states that Whittaker intends to leave the role as the iconic Timelord after Season 13. It quotes a source from the production, who says, "It's all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration. Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed."

Now Playing: Doctor Who Explained

In response to these rumors, the BBC simply stated, "We won't be commenting on any speculation around Jodie's future on the show."

This will be Whittaker's third season as the Doctor. The majority of the 12 previous actors also appeared for three seasons; only the First Doctor, played by William Hartnell, and Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor appeared for more. Whittaker took over from Peter Capaldi in 2018.

Production on Doctor Who Season 13 started in November. Due to the safety precautions in place, showrunner Chris Chibnall stated the next season will only have 8 episodes instead of the usual 11.

In related news, it was reported in August that Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor in the first reboot season back in 2005, will return to the role for a new series of audio adventures. The first volume of Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be released in May next year.

@Decoy77: Somebody clearly knows a lot about Doctor Who.

Apart from Hartnell and Baker no actor has ever stayed on longer than three seasons.

This is just the way the show works and has nothing to do with loosing viewers like you that are so insecure that they have to call the simple fact that a woman is in the lead a "feminist lovefest".

Doctor Who has been a progressive show since the day it started. Next you're going to complain about the diversity on Star Trek or that Captain America fighting white supremacist has made comics political.

If messages of positivity, unity and respect and against discrimination in your fictional media, that have always been there, now make you uncomfortable, maybe look into what might have changed in your own position to generate that reaction.

For me she brought nothing new to being The Doctor besides being the first female. Her constant, heavy out of breath talking and gurning was just irritating.

GET RID OF CHINBALL YOU IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!

Jodi with good stories and writing would have made a fine doctor. No matter who is in the role if Chinball is running it then it will still be a ratings disaster as it continues to be.

I do not care if the doctor is woman, man, gay, bi, trans, straight with gay tendencies, black, indian, middle eastern or asian as long as the writing does not suck

I am tired of rewatching old seasons to get my fix.

Can someone please remove the comment from PatriciaEwb99 offering an invitation to the "Sex Club"? These bots are out of hand.

@izraal: Yeah.... whoever's in charge of this site on the technical side needs to get replaced. Shouldn't be hard implementing filters against new accounts.... and not banning people who report bots lol

And then replace the creative lead too. The front page is a mess (especially with the thumbnails on the right).
