Doctors Hate This One Weird Trick For Getting A PS5 Pro For About $350

There's a very old -school solution for the PS5 Pro's $700 sticker price, assuming a major retailer doesn't make some changes.

Following the official reveal of the PlayStation 5 Pro earlier this week, the majority of the conversations about it have centered on its $700 price rather than its advanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. This is understandable, since $700 is a lot of money to put down on a new version of a console that's only been out for four years. But as noted by former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra, there's at least one way to get that price down. Or as they say in the spam ads, "one weird trick."

Ybarra pointed out a tactic that many fans had already thought about--namely trading in their existing PS5 models and effectively cutting the cost of a new PS5 Pro in half.

GameStop is offering between $350 to $385 in store credit for used PlayStation 5 consoles, with the higher prices for models with the disc drive. But if a significant number of gamers pursue that strategy, would GameStop keep that trade in value or lower the amount that it offers? Just because GameStop is offering those rates now doesn't guarantee that it will in November. That would throw a wrench in this strategy, especially since GameStop is facing more store closures. Additionally, the PS5 Pro doesn't come with a disc drive, with the optional add-on costing another $80. Unfortunately, it's already selling out across multiple retailers.

That strategy also runs into a problem if gamers haven't upgraded to a PS5 yet. Without a modern console to trade in, getting a PS5 Pro remains prohibitively expensive for some fans. But if a lot of used PS5 consoles suddenly hit the market--even with GameStop's markup--then perhaps that's a solution for anyone who hasn't joined the current console generation yet.

Sony will release the PS5 Pro on November 7, with preorders starting soon.

I should get extra value for my disc drive, now that Sony made it a separate cost.

Also, I don't want to have a BIG, separate accessory always next to my PS5. Having the console alone is enough for my entertainment center.

My mom wanted a used PS5 though with Gamestop used systems and giving $400 credit. I wonder if Gamestop would resell them for $450.

So we’re really going to act like we just unlocked some Ancient Chinese Secret?😂

Of course you can do that, but this means that you’ll be a few months without a PS5. On top of, you won’t have a disc drive. Has it even been confirmed that the stand alone disc drive that’s already available for PS5 is compatible with the PS5 Pro? Nonetheless, you’re still going to pay $350 + tax for the PS5 Pro after the trade in and then another $80 + taxfor the disc drive (if it’s compatible). That’s still $430 plus tax which in my state is about $468.70

If there is like an abundance of Pre owned PS5 game consoles at gamestop, Sony might sell less new PS5:s and more might buy a pre owned one. So it might hurt the sales of the regular PS5.

But i think the option to buy a pre owned Ps5 is out there right now. I noticed preowned Ps5:s for maybe 4000 or 4500 in my country (not at gamestop, but people selling privately), compared to about 6000 for a new one. Or 7000 for a new one with a disc drive.

So the option to buy a pre owned Ps5 is out there right now.. but if there is some kind of sale on pre owned ps5 s at gamestop if they get a too high stock, it might hurt sales of new ps5 s maybe.

Anyway, trading in is kind of an option i guess. for me personally, it is not an option since i do not own a regular ps5 yet.

And also, getting a ps5 pro is maybe not an important thing when my tv is not even 4k. First ps5, then a 4k tv. Then maybe eventually ps5 pro.

But i would rather spend on an ipad or save money for switch 2. Or a gaming pc. I feel like even if i had more money to spend, ps5 pro would not be high on my list. But ps5 pro is probably higher than ps vr 2.

You can definitely count on the PS5 trade in value going down because of this. It's not going to be 350 for much longer.

Even better if you own a car. You can sell it for say $20k and buy a Ps5 pro for $700. You will then have a brand new console AND $19,3k to spend on whatever you want!

@marklodi: Gamespot is just a vessel for clickbait ads at this point. It's following the Buzzfeed/Kotaku/etc model of using absolute nonsense headlines to generate more clicks. This site's content has lost nearly all of its substance. I feel bad for the writers who have to spend 90% of their time on this crap instead of writing editorials, which is what they likely want to do with their time.

@marklodi: "Lose weight with one weird tip" or "Doctors amazed by wrinkle-free 70 year old" are common scam ads. Apparently not common enough for the joke to land!

@camidumas: Yeah, definitely a big miss with that headline if you have to explain why it's supposed to be funny. "Funny" is a bit of a stretch even. It is a headline to an article though, he got that part right at least.

Edit" or she... I don't know who Blair is or how they want their pronouns, etc etc.

I'm sorry but this story is kinda odd! You're still paying $700 price tag, no matter how you split it. Even if you trade in your regular PS5, it wouldn't make it less expensive than it already is. No disc drive (and don't get me started you can buy it separately for $80 because that should have been on their, period) and no stand which is insulting as Sony can afford it to be included with the Pro as my PS5/God of War: Ragnarok bundle came with a stand and that bundle was price well.

@davillain: In a way it is odd, but one way of thinking about it is the price to upgrade is significantly less than the price to buy a ps5 pro and keep the ps5.

It is kind of like saying a new samsung galaxy phone costs only like a few hundred bucks if you sell the old one. Whichis kind of weird but still valid on some weird way. The cost of upgrading is less than the cost of buying. If you are okay with not owning both a ps5 and a ps5 pro, selling the old one is one way to do it.

Or keep Ps5, do not buy Ps5 pro and save 350 dollars because the difference does not even seem to be very big anyway. ( It is what my doctor orders. )

No, this math does NOT make $700 with less features OK. $450 to $700 same generation for disc-less, not justified.

Very corp apologist and anti-consumer. Screw Ybarra, he's rich, cause of gamers. He's not our friend.
