Does Shadow of Mordor's Crazy Ultra HD Content Pack Make a Real Difference?

See what awaits you if your computer is equipped with a 6 GB graphics card.

Gamers with extremely high-end computers can download a special HD content pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor that enables the game's Ultra-level textures. But do they actually make a difference?

In the very likely case that you're unable to take advantage of these yourself, Digital Foundry has provided some impressions of what they're like. You can also check out the video below for a comparison of the PS4 and PC (with Ultra textures) versions.

Expectedly, it's very pretty when running the game at Ultra. However, it's not the kind of leap over High that you might be hoping for, particularly because the most-improved areas are hard to notice while playing the game in a normal manner. "For the most part, we found that the high setting--in itself placing a significant video RAM requirement on the user--offers the bulk of the ultra experience," writes Digital Foundry.

The option for these Ultra textures are built into the game, but in order to actually activate them, you need to download a free DLC pack from Steam. Earlier this week, the pack was only obtainable through an unintuitive process.

Installing the HD content is now easy enough, but you'll need a fairly ridiculous rig in order to take advantage of this if you follow the recommended requirements. In addition to a 64-bit processor, you'll need at least 8 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11-compatible video card with at least 6 GB of memory. That is not a misprint. It is, however, what's making me so sad about having spent a ton of money on a 3 GB video card not so long ago.

Digital Foundry spoke with lead designer Bob Roberts about why this option is even being offered, given how few people have the necessary hardware. Roberts said the game's artists built the game's assets at "an outrageously high fidelity" before then optimizing them "to fit onto [PS4/Xbox One], to fit onto PCs at high-end specs."

"Then obviously there's going to be that boundary where our monster development PCs are running it OK--but why not give people the option to crank it up?" Roberts continued. "It makes sense to get it out into the world there--we have it, we built it that way to look as good as possible. You might as well, right?"

According to Digital Foundry, high-end artwork can actually be run on GPUs with less memory, but you'll run into issues without capping the framerate. Fortunately, the game offers a 30fps cap option if running the game at the highest quality possible is your goal, though you'll still want as much GPU memory as possible for a good experience.

For a comparison of the Xbox One, PS4, and PC (running without the Ultra textures) versions, check out our video below.

PC fanboy : "It is SO worth spending $2,500 on a new rig every 3 years so that I can keep up with new game requirements and freeze frame a game to spot a difference and justify my expenditures. It is much better than just spending $400 on a console system that will last for the next 8 years, because God forbid if I can't brag that I have the absolutely biggest and best.". To me it's just like those folks who put giant tires on their truck in order to compensate for other...shortcomings.

@batsu336 Let's not over-exaggerate. Yes, PC gaming is more expensive than console gaming but spending $2,500 every 3 years on a new rig is simply ludicrous. If you build a PC the right way the first time around, it will last you a long time. My PC's going to turn 6 years old and I've only upgraded the GPU on it once... nothing else has been touched. I have one of the early i7s, 6 GB of RAM in triple-channel (yes, my configuration is one of few that can actually make use of triple-channel as it seemed to be a very short-lived thing), and initially I had an HD5970 which I upgraded to an HD7970.

It is starting to show its age but it will still run anything thrown at it and run it well... and for a PC with a 6 year life span and one upgrade that's not bad. When you can run Battlefield 4 with almost everything turned all the way up, I'd consider that to still be pretty good as far as horsepower on a rig this old goes.

<< LINK REMOVED >> True but a big part of that is changes in how cpus have been advancing. The increasing clock speeds has slowed down a lot in the past years so they havent given people any good reasons to upgrade. I have an old i7 too but nothing is that much better yet

Years ago that wasnt the case

@jinzo9988 I agree with you there, you don't have to upgrade and spend that much money every 3 years to have games running at eye candy level and run well. If you do have money to burn and want to do it, that's great for you then. I spent a little over $2500 with my current gaming rig that I built a little over 3 years ago and it runs games just fine. All I did also was just upgrade the graphics from two GTX590's to two GTX780 OC and it's running games as if it's a whole new computer. I simply bought the best CPU, Motherboard(Asus Maximus IV Extreme) and almost fastest G.Skill ram at the time and didn't have to upgrade anything else. It can currently run Watch_Dogs in ultra mode without breaking a sweat, so I have future proofed my PC for I believe another 3 years and then it might begin to show it's age. Heck, I'm still using my former gaming system I built that's over 7 years old now as a second computer and can run games decently and look better than the 'current' gen consoles now. The reason why I am a PC gamer and will be for life not just because they can always run games that look better than consoles, but because at the time when I started gaming there we're no consoles( except for the Atari 2600 of course, and I'm not that old...lol). But younger generation these days have only grown up with consoles and that's why they defend their gaming consoles bitterly which is fine. Each to their own I say, but PC / console wars are just childish I think. Just enjoy the game regardless of what platform it's on and be done with it.

Peace out....

But let them think that in 8 years, so 2022, it's fine and awsome having a console with a graphics card that a PC already had much better ones in 2010.

@batsu336 My PC cost me $1200, and I can upgrade it as I go along, or not upgrade it if I really don't have money for it, that isn't the case. The only frame that is frozen is the one in your head and the max 30 fps locked on your console. Look at a PC running better graphics, textures at more than double that console frame rate, and you can clearly see a difference, obviously not on crappy encoding videos such as this, on a site that wants and needs the new consoles to do good and sell alot.

However Console Fanboys like you keep trying to make your fantasy come true with comments such as yours, trying to say there is very little difference between a console and a PC in terms of performance, or that performance difference isn't worth X amount of dollars. Who are you to say what other people should do with their money kid? XD

Also believing that a console that just came out with a graphics card corresponding to the 500 nvidia series that was born in 2010, meaning its been outdated for years before the console even came out, will last decently for the next 8 years, isnt' fantasy, it is stupidity.

Don't be pathetic. Just say you prefer not to or don't have enough money to spend on game platforms as your main reason for getting just that one console. Or say you want others to make adjustments to all your games to run decently enough, so you wont have to tweak any of the graphics options cause its too hard!

Or just say you just really really want this or that game exclusive for your console, and you can't buy any other gaming platform. Stick to those arguements and you'll be fine.

well with nvidia 500 series cards you cannot run the last of us 1080p 60 fps:) Even with gtx780 you have problems to hit 1080p games like metro redux and so on because lag of vram:)

@Damazig I spent 1160 dollars on my PC in 2010. I've used it since then for every game that's come out with no problems. I upgraded to a GTX 750 this summer and everything runs perfectly. So, that 1160 combined with the 300 I spent on my monitor and the 160 on my video card, over the course of 4 yrs, oh no. So much money.

Not.

I have a decent gaming PC with a 4gb Nvidia 670 card, 16gb of system ram, a nice primary monitor, good gaming mouse... etc.

But, I decided to buy this game for PS4 (I could've gone with XBox One also, I'll be getting Alien: Isolation for XBox One I've decided - only game I have for it now is Destiny and I want something else to encourage more use of the console) - I considered getting this for PC... lord knows I have enough nice 360 wireless controllers I can use with my PC laying around... and lord knows I can easily get the game on my same TV screen the consoles are hooked to (25 foot HDMI cable across the room) but I guess I just like the simplicity.

I like having a case and a disc, I like having the option to trade the game in if I feel confident I won't play it again... I like getting some use out of my consoles... I like knowing it's going to run and run reliably. Wolfenstein: The New Order wasn't even playing on my PC. Rage had tons of issues. I did the same thing with both. I ended up double-paying for those games like a fool because I got the PC version first of Rage and Wolfenstein: New Order, and then after frustration and inability to play... I ended up buying a console version (XBox 360 for Rage, PS4 for New Order.) So I think I'm starting to just care more about the reliability and simplicity than the maximum graphical fidelity.

Too many tech hickups... I go in cycles like this. I do have an Oculus DK2 and intend to get the final consumer version, so I'll certainly be hitting up plenty of PC gaming going forward... but, yea - you console-primary players have a point sometimes. There's a lot to be said for just putting a disc in, and it working.

You didn't even try to troubleshoot your problem, did you? Find out which enviroment variables you might be missing? Read up on forums?

Being lazy is not a luxury PC gamers can have. You go PC, you're gonna have to be prepared to get your hands dirty.

"There's a lot to be said for just putting a disc in, and it working."

Yeah -- it can be said that it's obviously gonna work, since it's only one use case. One type of configuration and hardware setup that doesn't change. PC's are impossibly dynamic and a game will never work well on all types of hardware. The best you can do when you build your PC is to use popular and well-supported parts and make a rig that works great and makes sense.

Obscure setups rarely end well.

I've been a PC gamer arguably since about 1985 but definitely since my 386 in 1989/90 and have always been primarily a PC gamer. Most times my consoles collect dust.

I did extensive troubleshooting and researching, and have done so on many games. Sometimes I'm able to reach a solution, other times not. Rage was notorious for these sorts of problems and Wolfenstein used the same engine.

I have been doing extensive troubleshooting both software and hardware wise for years, have installed plenty of components... figured many things out... but yea, sometimes I feel like being lazy and just popping something into a console. As I said, it comes in cycles and phases. Right now I'm in a "just put in a disc and have it run" phase, and it probably helps that the new consoles look pretty decent.

"What sort of processor do you have?" "you must have a faulty processor or something"

Intel i5-2500k

I run plenty of stuff just fine. Metro and Last Light ran flawlessly. Diablo 3 runs fine... StarCraft 2... MechWarrior Online... Counter-Strike, Wasteland 2...

Again, Rage was notorious for this stuff. I'm primarily referring to the texture pop in problem with that. With New Order it just wouldn't even start. I'm sure it would now, after some patches... but I felt like playing it when it first came out.

Hell even on 4k resolution with these textures 20-45 fps or something like that. This really is what I call a very good port from console. Even the UI works on PC/desktop better than in most games that comes from console. Good job by the team who made this.

Yes there is a clear difference in open world details, but nowhere near significant. If you don't stop and look at grass on purpose, it won't matter though.

One thing that needs mention is poor texture work. Aside from the resolution, textures themselves are not really high quality, they don't have as much detail as they can. I know lots of games that have shown a lot more detail with a lot less resolution and this points to lack of quality on Monolith's part while creating textures. By no means this makes the game a bad game, but shows there is still a lot to improve visually.

This gen they really need to start looking at the details rather than the graphics. Forget HD texture packs and all that jazz, I want limb dismemberment and more internal organ spillage not just some blood splatter. When I hit someone with a sword I want a wound to appear exactly where the sword hit its mark on their body.

I remember how awesome it was when I first saw the blood splatter from one of the cloned soldier's leg in F.E.A.R when you hit them with a shotgun shell. Or when they basically explode. I even enjoyed seeing soldiers in Wolfenstein with parts of their rib cages showing after being hit with dual wielded assault rifles or being scorched black from the energy weapons.

It is the details in games that make all the difference, not random textures that you need to have a trained eye to see in the first place.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I skipped the 780ti because Watch Dogs (despite it's poor optimisation) made it clear that more V-Ram would be required for next gen games. That 8GB (5GB allocated for games) of unified memory in both consoles will become more of an issue for PC ports, "console" developers don't like optimising for split memory (v-ram - system ram) so more v-ram require for ultra textures.

Having said that, so far ultra texture packs (outside of Sleeping Dogs) haven't made much difference.

There are rumours of a GTX 980 8GB in december. If you want max settings for the enitre new gen console life cycle it might require that one more upgrade.

I always just sell my GPU on eBay and pay a couple o hundred for the latest, with the money you save on free online play and cheaper games it's not really an issue.

780GTX 3GB can handle Ultra textures 90 percent of the time. While traversing to different zones you will experience stutter, which means that your memory has run out, but it will end and you'll resume playing at 60-70 fps.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have a 670GTX, which is only 2GB. However I play on Very High (without the hair effect - pointless fps drop - since I see no visual difference in the hair) and also have Ambient Occulsion on Med but Texture on High.

It looks pretty good and run smooth with Vsync - but I had to go Borderless (which look exactly like Fullscreen) : that REALLY HELPED. When using Vsync, I will occasionally drop from 60 to 30. However with Borderless it works like a good triple buffering for DX games: and you get 60 instead!

I tested it in a fixed area, the moment I went borderless I have jumped from 30 to 59 fps.

About the Ultra Textures, I don't know if they are worth it, I hear they don't...

I have played a few hours of the game, so far it has been really fun, it was a bit more challenging at first but now it feels easier, maybe because I just begun.

This game feels like a mix of Assassin's Creed (stealth), Batman (combat and counters and movement) and Tomb Raider (bow). Thing is while the game has some unique features, I can't help but feel a bit strange with the fact its somewhat derivative - mimicking Batman for instance: when you hit X8 to make a B+Y "execution" just how you hit X8 hit streak in Batman AC to be able to perform B+Y takedown. The combat system is not only extremely similar, it feels identical to the point that I can imagine Batman fighting orcs in the exact same manner.

Now another issue with that, is the easy "press Y" for counter, and the beat'em up fighting system:

When you punch someone many times like batman does, and they don't really block (sometimes partially block and absorb hits) it looks more reasonable and realistic (to a degree). However when you slice an Orc 7 times with a sword to build up a Hit Streak X8 - those 7 hits are never blocked. Which means the Orc just took 7 sword blows to his bare flesh, without dodging or blocking any, and unlike fists, that hurts, breaks, kills and dismember the body.

It looks and feels off. This is a direct result of mimicking Batman AC without giving orcs swordplay maneuvers like blocking, parrying, swatting and strafing.

Unlike The Witcher, Dark Souls, Prince of Persia and even DmC (at harder difficulties): where enemies would block some of your hits, dodge, parry or swat them aside, so even if you pull off a combo, it would make sense that it take several sword strike to hit and finish you opponent. Here in SoM, its just ridiculous that you can hit someone 8 times, but then press Y+B to execute another uninjured Orc just because you unlocked "execution".

the game looks good on ps4 and pc. and honestly when you go from low to high the biggest changes u see is in the characters hair and for on his clothes.

really happy that the game looks incredible on a console. i guess the biggest pc advantage is playing it at 60fps.

pointless for a game that visually and artistically doesn't look THAT good.

Glad they do this with PC games now. In 50 years I'll be able to play the game on hyper tessellation, uber sampling temporal AA, and ultra parallax mapping, ultra tight closer approximate soft shadows, and hyper realistic reflective surfaces that blind; and, all of this at 120 fps. :P

Jokes aside, I have the game on PS4 and out of the games I have played on the system, I think it's the first time I noticed superb tessellation going on in almost all the objects and characters. What really gabbed me was the wooden objects have special attention to detail, and if you look at the mountains, they are tessellated as well. If you fight an uruk with the "diseased" moniker, you will see what tessellation can do for a video game character, and you will be instantly repulsed and awed at the same time -- I nearly threw up my lunch. I caught myself searching out the many objects in the game just to see if everything had tessellation, and it's safe to say that nearly all the objects from the trees, right down to the frills on Talion's cloak have it as far as I know. All in all, not bad for a little box that costs roughly as much as a single high end graphics card; moreover, it manages to pull it all off at 30 fps with almost no frame rate issues -- unless you consider 30 fps an issue in and of itself. For the rest of us who don't have the rig to pwn this game, at least as far as PS4 goes, it's pretty killer in the graphics department.

Well I own a PS4 and this game and while it does look good, this HD pack smokes my PS4. But not enough to entice me to buy a gaming pc. In the beginning of this video, the first shot looks identical but once they started playing it you can see it. It looks great on pc but again I'll stick with my consoles. Graphics arent everything.,.

<< LINK REMOVED >> no, much better than Destiny. A lot of people trade it in to buy Shadow of Mordor.

I was one of those fine individuals. Well worth it, too. I put the same amount of time into SoM in two days as I did with Destiny in two weeks.

The quality we see in the video isn't the quality we would see having the game be rendered live. A lot of the fine details that make it look so much better are lost due to the lower quality of the video compression. Post screenshots that don't have the big drop in quality or give us a video file that doesn't need to be streamed and compressed.

It's a slight enhancement in the video, but hey, if you've got the equipment for it, why not?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> what? nonsense.

Let's say you have a ridiculous PC with 3 or 4 video cards and it uses 1000 watts at full load. 1KW per hour. Electricity in CA costs 15.2cents/KWh. At a few hours per day we get 1KW*2hours*15.2cents/KWh = 30.4 cents per day (of max load game time). 30 days in a month gives you 912 cents or $15.2 a month. Remember, this computer uses 3 or 4 times as much power as a normal computer with 1 video card. Idle power usage is much lower. You might as well unplug your fridge and turn off your AC if you're worried about power consumption.

I can't wait until they release the Extended Edition in six months with 30 extra minutes of never-before-seen footage (18 minutes of which are additional credits).
