Does Shadow of Mordor's Crazy Ultra HD Content Pack Make a Real Difference?

See what awaits you if your computer is equipped with a 6 GB graphics card.

Gamers with extremely high-end computers can download a special HD content pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor that enables the game's Ultra-level textures. But do they actually make a difference?

In the very likely case that you're unable to take advantage of these yourself, Digital Foundry has provided some impressions of what they're like. You can also check out the video below for a comparison of the PS4 and PC (with Ultra textures) versions.

Expectedly, it's very pretty when running the game at Ultra. However, it's not the kind of leap over High that you might be hoping for, particularly because the most-improved areas are hard to notice while playing the game in a normal manner. "For the most part, we found that the high setting--in itself placing a significant video RAM requirement on the user--offers the bulk of the ultra experience," writes Digital Foundry.

The option for these Ultra textures are built into the game, but in order to actually activate them, you need to download a free DLC pack from Steam. Earlier this week, the pack was only obtainable through an unintuitive process.

Installing the HD content is now easy enough, but you'll need a fairly ridiculous rig in order to take advantage of this if you follow the recommended requirements. In addition to a 64-bit processor, you'll need at least 8 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11-compatible video card with at least 6 GB of memory. That is not a misprint. It is, however, what's making me so sad about having spent a ton of money on a 3 GB video card not so long ago.

Digital Foundry spoke with lead designer Bob Roberts about why this option is even being offered, given how few people have the necessary hardware. Roberts said the game's artists built the game's assets at "an outrageously high fidelity" before then optimizing them "to fit onto [PS4/Xbox One], to fit onto PCs at high-end specs."

"Then obviously there's going to be that boundary where our monster development PCs are running it OK--but why not give people the option to crank it up?" Roberts continued. "It makes sense to get it out into the world there--we have it, we built it that way to look as good as possible. You might as well, right?"

According to Digital Foundry, high-end artwork can actually be run on GPUs with less memory, but you'll run into issues without capping the framerate. Fortunately, the game offers a 30fps cap option if running the game at the highest quality possible is your goal, though you'll still want as much GPU memory as possible for a good experience.

For a comparison of the Xbox One, PS4, and PC (running without the Ultra textures) versions, check out our video below.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You can set the textures in game to Ultra with or without the pack, but you won't see any difference unless you have the pack installed.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> really? wow.. that's misleading. I was pretty sure I lost some performance when I put it on Ultra.
So what do you think? Is it worth it?

I currently have a GTX 670 and i5-3570-K with 16 GB of RAM. VRAM of 670 is 2048 (2gb).

I play basically on Very High but with Med Ambient Occlusion (fps dropper), without the Hair effect (fps dropper) and with Vsync and Borderless mode. It runs fine and usually at 60fps. However if I play on Fullscreen it will occasionally drop to 30s fps whilst Borderless prevents this! (read about it online, a form of Triple Buffering, highly recommended!)

So I don't know if I can attempt to run the Ultra textures, they are referring to the model textures I understand?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> when you set to Very High, you have many settings (beside the Textures) set on Ultra. Since I play on Very High now like that, and my performance is pretty solid, if I download the Texture Pack and keep the game at Very High eventually: will I lose FPS?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> but you understand my question right? I think I will just stay away from downloading them. Seriously even the PS4 version looks pretty close to the PC one.

I just worry I will DL the ULTRA, not use them, and make my Very High Setting a low performance. Although I think the Ultra only replace the single settings called Texture something (the one with Vram usage)

The ultra textures are for all textures I think, some more noticeable than others though.

I've just installed the game and the HD texture pack and ran the benchmark on my GTX 970 with 4GB VRAM, and the game didn't use more than 3.5GB VRAM, with my average FPS being 87FPS (all settings maxed).

I think their estimations are grossly overestimated!

It does NOT need 6GB. People with 3GB are running the ultra pack with an average fps of 50-60.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have a two 780s (3GB VRAM) in SLI (SLI forced using the FEAR 3 SLI profile), and get around 75+ fps average in the benchmark with everything at Ultra. BUT even though my average FPS is high, it still seems to chop up now and then. When I drop the textures down a notch it runs perfect. So I don't know if 3GB really is enough.

Watch Dogs was the same way, on Ultra textures it hitched up a lot, on High textures it ran fine.

I only noticed slight differences between the Ultra and High textures in Shadow of Mordor, so I don't mind running at high. In Watch Dogs I noticed a big difference between Ultra and high.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I probably should have mentioned I'm running at 1440p, which will use more VRAM than people running at 1080p. I'll just go start the game and look at how much VRAM I'm using.

I ran the game with EVGA precision, the VRAM usage is 3050mb, so pretty much maxed out with Ultra textures. With High textures it was around 2900mb max and zero hitching. I need to track down a 6gb card!

<< LINK REMOVED >> You answered my question: was wondering if two 3gig cards running sli adds up to 6gigs -- still only 3gigs max for textures just faster fps, particularly at higher res I guess.

So basically I'm suppose to sell my PS4 and spend close to $1000 on some insane gaming rig in which the graphics are on par/slightly better than the console? Yea.....no...

It's not just graphics. Coming from someone who was a total console gamer until a couple years ago, PC is just better in every way. I can play at my desk with my 144 hz monitor with mouse and keyboard or grab my wireless 360 controller or my plugged in XB1 controller or swap TV inputs and take either of those to my couch or use my wireless keyboard and wireless mouse on the couch. I'll be getting a 1440p monitor soon, ps4 players seem to love talking about resolution these days, but they will never see over 1080. Or I can stream steam to my laptop and play while watching TV. And don't even get me started on steam sales. Console gamers also love talking about exclusives, but most Xbox and a decent amount of ps4 exclusive started or came to PC. Oh and I can't forget about dolphin, my HD Wii / game cube emulator. Just trust me, once you go PC, the only thing you'll want from a console is controlling your tv with your voice.

@Infinite_713 OR maybe you are like me and you could already own a GTX 670 and a Core I5 2500k since 3 years ago and can run this game no problem with the Ultra HD texture pack not dipping below 55fps at all.

A thing that your supposedly "OP" AND recently released PS4 can't do at all, seriously, console kiddies, check your facts before bashing for free...

<< LINK REMOVED >> For the record, my PC was built in 2009 for around £600. The GTX 970 just cost me £280. As above, my frame rate WITH the pack is 80+ @ 1080p.

This whole "Pc gaming costs thousands" is complete rubbish, and you should do your own research instead of listening to internet rumours.

@Infinite_713 actually a $600 rig could max this game on high and the new releases would be much cheaper but anyway...... the graphics are not "slightly better" because this is a last gen game that looks like crap on all platforms, the textures are last gen because they were held back for consoles, games that fully utilize PC graphics destroy console graphics in performance and fidelity just go look at crysis and compare it to everything else at the time, and i buy games for 5-30 dollars even new releases so i end up saving more money that consoels and i dont need a $500 HD tv either

<< LINK REMOVED >> please link a newegg shopping cart including all required parts and peripherals (1080p monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers) for $600. (case, mobo, at least 500gb hardrive, video card, memory, cpu, 8 gb ram, and reliable psu) Also, the point that this game could be played on high with a budget machine is correct but any resource heavy game such as BF4 or Metro this specs would simply be insufficient for this price range (which is still more expensive and time consuming when compared to a plug and play console.

@Infinite_713 @Smackpwn Because the PS4 is expensive. Sony doesn't ask too much for every console sold, but they do ask a crapload for every game released for it's platform. In other words, you can buy Shadow of Mordor on PC for 35$, you're stuck with the Sony price of 60$ on PS4, and that's going to be like that forever. If you buy 10 games for PC vs console, it's already going to be 250$ difference between both.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's all about standards bro. If you're happy with console then perfect. It's cheaper and more casual that way for people who don't have all day to play games. For those of us with higher expectations, and more time to game, however, we would prefer to spend $600 - $2000 on a much better gaming experience.

HD textures ≠ high poly meshes. That's where you can get real improvement from graphics-wise.
