Don't Expect Xbox One and a Half, Xbox Head Says

"I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers."

After Microsoft's Build 2016 developer keynote earlier this week, Xbox head Phil Spencer talked to the press about a variety of topics. In addition to discussing gaming across Xbox One and PC, clarifying the "monopolization" controversy for Windows, and mentioning that a Halo 5 PC release is unlikely, he also talked about the rumored PlayStation 4.5 and the possibility of Xbox One going a similar path.

When asked about a potential Xbox 1.5 update, Spencer answered, "I'm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we're going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers," Spencer clarified that he doesn't have any inside knowledge about PlayStation's plans or the rumors currently circulating, but he added, "For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people--an upgrade."

Phil Spencer has commented on console hardware upgrades before, saying he isn't planning to have people open up their Xbox One and upgrade individual pieces.

In related news, reports on the PlayStation 4.5 are true according to Digital Foundry. The hardware analysis publication says it has independently verified that the upgraded PS4 exists and that it will have an upgraded GPU.

Very smart decision. Releasing new updated hardware for consoles is just a terrible idea as it basically screws everyone that purchased the console up to that point. It basically alienates your best customers, those that have already purchased a console from you.

With x86 architecture (and much easier job to make new consoles backward-compatible), I think there is very little reason not to release more frequent updates. My PS4 is 2 years old, might work well another 5 years, might stop working tomorrow. Since it is out of warranty, I'd rather re-purchase faster machine that can run all the old games just fine, but can also provide benefits over original PS4 in future games, be it resolution, frame-rate, more detailed visuals, any or all of above.

Of course I would not jump on new console just because it is released, but as long as new games work on original console as well, I really don't feel any "insecurity" nor do I have any other problems with console being refreshed in terms of hardware more often than what we were seeing before. After all, I'm upgrading my PC every 2 years on average, and while I will not replace whole system every 2 years, upgrades usually come up to the price of new console anyway.

@nikon133:The upgrade may be as simple as having a game maxed at 1080p on the new model versus having it at 720p maxed in detail on the original...it would be similar to the ram upgrade on the N64. This should make it easier for developers and for those who want a better looking output will upgrade...those that are happy with 720p, can keep the original model.

I don't know if people know this but Sony has no PC ventures unlike Microsoft so PS4 has too stay viable if Sony wants to stay in the game...

Vita is pretty much dead and PS4 is Sony only option.

@megakick: Right and Sony sold off Sony Online Entertainment, so Everquest and Planetside are no longer theirs. You make a good point. Is Vita dead in Japan too, or just in America?

Flip flop, flip flop. He's like a fish drowning. Suppose might not be Phil's fault, he can only go by what he's told. One minuets they will, the next its definatly off the cards.

I don't see another piece of hard ware from M$. They just needed to Xbox to get their OS into the livingroom. Once they've got a good foot hold. Just watch the Xbox disappear.

But does seem as if the M$ acolytes have been placated with fine words or sermone from their great Minister!! X1 fnas so easy to fool it seems. "Look at the shiney shiney"

It would be smart on Phil's part to just sit back and wait for PS4.5 or what ever it is come out, let the PS VR hit this holiday hard and see what Nintendo is up too. After all of that announce the new and most powerful console XBOX 2.

@emptycow718: not sure what the point of your response is....are you saying they will only get 20 fps? I'm not saying the games should be 4K as most people here wouldn't be willing to pay for the system nor the TV to see 4K. There are those of us who own TVs that are high end and would like to use our consoles to watch the 4K content our TV is capable of viewing.

I can agree with Phil on the semantics side. With the PS4 outselling the X1 at nearly a 2:1 ratio, I'm pretty sure they'd want to slap a new name on their flagship console to rejuvenate their brand. Although MS may not go the same route as Playstation with a mid-cycle hardware update. I'm halfway thinking they might revert back to their original intentions with the X1 - creating a digital-only model with no optical drive. They could slim down the console size, reduce cost by removing the optical drive, and even throw in a mainboard upgrade to support 4K video playback and 4K upscaling; all the while keeping the internals the same so that the developers have the same hardware specs to work with.

@ltjohnnyrico: Actually MS confirmed it first, but without much detail of its implementation.

They way I read it, it seemed that they would follow an IPhone like approach with constant revisions on a yearly basis or something a long those lines, which is even worse.

However, it seems they are holding it back for now. It's only natural to let Sony test the waters first, since they seem to be the ones pushing it much more aggressively; and depending on the results, it could even have MS scrap the idea completely. Imo, it turned out well for them with Sony paving the way and taking the risk. If Sony succeed however, it'll be even harder for them to catch them up; and despite not liking the concept at all, they'll probably succeed and a new era for "console?" gaming will rise, only a few years into the generation cycle.

I think there is merit to a 1.5 idea. Kind of like in the handheld space where you get a new 3ds.

An Xbox 1.5 could provide a mid-cycle upgrade that allows games to run at higher res and frame rate on Xbox 1.5 whilst still playing on Xbox 1.

## I've been an Xbox zealot for 10 years now, and it's my no. 1 platform. That said, if Sony ship a PS 4.5 or whatever and it can hold current titles at 1080p/60fps (regardless of game type) and MS doesn't respond in a reasonable timeframe then I'm saying bye-bye to MS for good and hello to Sony. I think that 1080p/60fps is critical for a good gaming experience and the jokes that are the present gen can't even get close - it's not much to expect this mediocre res and fps in 2016 with PCs smashing 4k, 144hz etc. I know where is a substantial price difference, but if a $200 GTX960 outperforms current gen consoles there is a genuine problem. I was so looking forward to this gen and 1080p/60fps titles - what we ended up with was a pair of consoles that wowed exactly nobody.

I just hope MS learn from the general debacle that is the Xbox One launch and give us an updated console without compromises, caveats, weird design decisions, compulsory accessories that are principally useless etc.

@t1000_v2: i was like you, Xbox since day dot but thought I'd try PS this time around and purchased it at Xmas 2015. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how easily the transition was, with my main concern the PS4 controller, which was really a non event. That was the main reason I've never owned a PS system in the past. The interface works nicely and the system is super quiet. I was running an old 360 elite, and that thing sounded like a F-18 super hornet about to go in to haul ass mode! With that said I'll be none too pleased if they release a more powerful version in the coming months or this year and it's a big leap forward in performance. If I wanted on going upgrades I'd go back to PC gaming, which I'm well past. I buy a consol expecting it to be 'the' unit for that generation not for part of it. If it does happen, and evidence suggests it will, then Xbox will follow and ultimately we'll be forced to upgrade more regularly to have the optimum system/performance in the generations to follow which to me is BS. It's bad enough we get half baked games that require ongoing purchases to get the full experience, now it looks like its about to roll out with consol hardware also.

I'm all in for an upgrade. My ps4 was already 2 years behind the tech of its time when it came out. In fact, in my opinion, the reason games are getting visual downgrades these days is because of the current gen consoles and their hardware limitations. Also, unfortunately PC owners are indirectly and unfairly suffering from the parity policies exist in the industry. Thus, I believe it will in the benefit of everyone if consoles receive hardware upgrade.

Sony views the PSVR as a big upgrade. Xbox doesn't have anything similar coming so there is no reason to announce any upgrades.

If true, I believe the rumor is being overblown and the updates are likely focused on improving PSVR and 4K with all the games able to run on any Ps4 without any difference. Maybe some slight improvements if you own PSVR, but only for PSVR software.

Also wasn't the ps4 "'Upgraded"' using the term loosely - 1tb model was from what I read quieter and better processing and the x1 got a 20% boost in performance..........

My 1080p television works fine. A 4k feature at this point would be useless for me. However that doesn't mean I wouldn't upgrade if they released an Xbox that pushes more polygons.
