Don't Get Rid Of Your 3DS Yet

Atlus confirms it is bringing its latest Etrian Odyssey game to the West.

3DS may have been overshadowed by the Switch since Nintendo's hybrid console released last year, but there are still a number of great titles in store for the dual-screen handheld, and another one has now joined that list. Atlus has announced it is bringing the final 3DS installment in the Etrian Odyssey series, Etrian Odyssey Nexus, to the West in early 2019.

Like previous entries in the franchise, Etrian Odyssey Nexus is a first-person dungeon crawler in which players use the system's touch screen to map out a winding labyrinth as they explore it. This installment takes players to the archipelago of Lemuria, where they must create a party to explore labyrinths and uncover the mysteries of the World Tree Yggdrasil.

Billed as the "definitive Etrian Odyssey experience," Nexus features the largest selection of characters and classes to date, with 19 different jobs drawn from throughout the series' history, plus the brand-new Hero class. The game also features four different difficulty settings that players can swap between, as well as an optional auto-mapping feature that automatically charts out dungeons as you explore.

Etrian Odyssey Nexus launches on February 5, 2019. The series has been consistently well-regarded since it originally debuted on DS in 2007. The latest installment, Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth, launched in 2017 and earned an 8/10 from GameSpot. In our Etrian Odyssey V review, critic Heidi Kemps wrote, "By focusing instead on small improvements to systems and ideas that already worked well, Etrian Odyssey 5 is a long and challenging RPG that sucks you in and leaves you determined to see what lies above."

Beyond Etrian Odyssey Nexus, 3DS owners still have remakes of Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story to look forward to in the near future. Atlus also recently announced another Etrian Odyssey-style game, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, will launch in Japan this November, although the publisher has yet to confirm if that game will also make its way to the West as its predecessor did.

I never even considered getting rid of my 3ds. I could play only my 3ds & quite possibly still never finish all the games I want to play for it (tho I take my time, admittedly). Seriously, for people that have 2 or more other systems (PC, xb1, ps4 switch), & plays games for those systems, surely they can't have played everything they've wanted to on 3ds? The 3ds has a varied enough library that I can't fathom why anyone would want to get rid of it. I love the 3d, which was my main reason for buying one on launch. So, now that that fad has come & gone on living room TV's, the 3ds is the only way I can experience 3d, & it's perfect for me to lay in bed & play. Too bad I couldn't afford the 3d displays when uncharted 3 was released, since it was made from the ground up for 3d. Oh well.

If anyone wants to get rid of their 3ds that they've taken great care of, ask your friends. Don't let it go to some random at GameStop or Amazon who may not appreciate a well taken care of system (which is hard to find, also, so you'll save them the trouble of buying refurbished garbage hunting to find one without a loose hinge & caked up gunk in all the crevices & buttons that no cleaner seems to be able to remove).

EDIT: Ninty, if u screw us out of Persona Q2... just don't do it. I'm warning u... Don't screw us.

Love my 3ds, wish the virtual console had more classic games or for alot less some are over priced but still good. as for new games, tired of the bombardment of rpg games not my type of genre. its too bad the switch doomed it I hope it has a successor that switch is too big to carry around for portability for me its a brick like the samsung note phones

@Archangel2222: there is an easy solution to the virtual console problem, if you don't mind hacking your 3ds. you can then install any gb/gbc/gba/nes/snes games on your 3ds and make it the ultimate handheld.

This has to be one of the best times and best generation for RPG gamers since the 5th gen. From CRPGs like Divenity, legrand, tooth and tail, southparks, Torment Tides, and dozens and dozens that have come out in the last few years. Console rpgs too numerous to count from western rpgs to brutal new ips like Darksouls and similar games like it. Nier, and Persona. With less commercial fanfare like Atlair, tales of, and my personal new favorite in years -- The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Even mobile is just killing it, my only wish is that I had more hours in the day to play em.

@redhedjack: People that usually get rid of games once they finish them. So when their console is no longer getting new games and they finished their library, they get rid of their console.

@redhedjack: Nothing comes of hoarding things you don't use anymore. Most people move on because there's no point being stuck on the same old stuff, otherwise there's no point in making or getting new things.

@redhedjack: They didn't say throw away they said get rid of, and a lot of people do. Not me though.

I don't like how they use the Etrian Odyssey moniker for the whole series, since only the first game occurs in Etria. That would be like calling the Indiana Jones sequels "Raiders of the Lost Ark 2", 3, 4, etc.

@DukeGallison: So it's like the Ys series then. They're up to Ys VIII yet only II is actually in Ys.

@DukeGallison: A name change may confuse people into not knowing that they are part of the same series. That's probably also why Final Fantasy still has the same name.

Great to hear this is officially coming.

I don't know what it was, but I haven't gotten further than a few demos for this series; yet the games have always seemed to be admirable adventures.

Nexus seems like a "best of" approach to the series, and very well could be the only game in '19 for the system...I'll save a spot for this one.

I just upgraded from a launch 3ds to the 2ds Zelda one. The difference between the two is night and day to me. I don't think I'll ever sell it to be honest.

don't worry, i don't think anyone was ready to throw their 3ds in the trash. i always find it weird how people are so eager to sell or "throw into a dusty drawer" their older consoles the moment a successor is launched. as if anyone has played all the great games on ANY platform... that would be a tall order for the ds for example, let alone the 3ds. are some people really that compulsive and controlled by modern technology that they cannot appreciate older devices? i get as much enjoyment out of my ds, psp, wii, ps2, ps3, etc as i do with my ps4 and 3ds and will never sell any of them. great games are great games regardless of the platform they are on (or age of said platform). simple as that.

@Xristophoros: some of us have been gaming for longer than some of you have been alive. I speak for myself when I say I only look to play the best of AAA games. I don't have time to throw away playing subpar games that most people do. When a new system shows up I buy it so I have the option of playing a game that isn't offered on previous consoles. Again when you've been playing as long as I have you start to see a trend that 80 percent of games are stuff that you've already played at some point in the past. Please don't bash me or lecture just giving my point of view on why some us move on from older consoles the minute a new one comes along.
