Doom 4 Was Rebooted Because It was Too Much Like Other Shooters

The perils of making a first-person shooter...

Last week at E3 2015, developer Bethesda showed off substantial gameplay of its upcoming Doom reboot. However, back in 2008 the studio announced Doom 4, the fourth in the storied franchise, but that game was canceled and development restarted in 2013. A new interview suggests that the game was scrapped because it was too similar to other shooters.

Speaking with Polygon, Bethesda's Pete Hines said that Doom 4 ended up departing too much from classic Doom games, to the point where it lost the feel of the series. As a result, it drifted more toward the design of other popular shooters until Bethesda decided it needed to rethink development.

"We decided that it wasn't Doom enough and needed to be thrown out and started over," Hines explained. "You can probably close your eyes and imagine a 'Call of Doom' or a 'BattleDoom' game, where it starts to feel way too much like: 'Wait, this doesn't feel like Doom, it feels like we're playing some other franchise with a Doom skin on it.'"

He described the game as too slow and overly dependent on common elements of other shooter games. Doom 4 didn't have nearly as robust an execution system as the reboot, either. According to Hines, "The combat was more disconnected, you almost found yourself taking cover at times and using things from other FPSes, which might be fine for them, but for Doom it just doesn't feel right."

The reboot, called simply Doom, will launch sometime in 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. At E3, the game's producer assured players that even though the game looked easy during its demo, it will still pose a significant challenge when the final product comes out. You can check out our impressions of the gameplay shown off here.

Looks pretty damn boring tbh.....110% action with no suspense or danger or tension or atmosphere or plot whatsoever. Just run around and shoot stuff, rinse & repeat. The game back in 1993 may have been like this, but in 2015 there a lot of room for improvement.

Still, adding a co-op option like Left 4 Dead with bigger maps and more enemies and challenges would be something IMO. Add a survival element if anything...

The only thing I liked about Doom 3, was the build up to the first time they bring out a monster. That build up was more intense than the rest of the game...I hope do the same in this one, but considering they scrapped an entire project since it didn't "feel" like Doom itself, I would say that they know what they're doing.

I will stick to the originals. Looks like doom 3 part 2 to me. Doom 3 was pretty good but nothing compared to originals. I dont think it can be done on modern hardware without turning it into a serious sam clone

I still think any new doom is going to struggle putting a decent amount of monsters on screen at once in modern graphics. Doom 3 had the same issues, and the demo only had a few monsters at a time. Plutonia go2it had hundreds of monsters on screen at once. A modern PC would choke and die on that.

So... Doom 4 which is just titled "Doom", is another Doom reboot because wasn't Doom 3 a reboot as well?

Doom needs:

A simple story. Fast phased shooting. Level design with the use of key cards (backtracking). heavy metal music. false rooms. traps unlocking walls with a bunch of enemies. Classic enemies. Limited amounts of ammo. Secret levels.

Be old school as ****.

@jdlok: agree. Doom 4 hardly resembles doom. Looks way more like doom 3 to me. My biggest issue is why the linear small levels with 3 enemies at once? In the race to modern graphics gameplay got left behind somewhere. How does a 20 year old engine on the originals have a hundred enemies at once and today we get 4 real life looking enemies? what happened there its like they went backwards but the graphics got better.

I like it, but bring back the horned Hell Knights!! I couldn't stand many of the D3 reboots and it appears they are using the same skins.

And for the better. D00M is a shooter I can support and enjoy like the original two. If four player coop gets added, I'll be very happy.

I never grew up with Doom. Doom 1 and 2 were practically off-limits to me, as was Doom 3 when I was a kid.

I did eventually get Doom 3: BFG Edition and played it from there. Good stuff.

And what I saw of the game at E3......my body could not be any more ready. Bring it.

It looks more appealing to me than I thought it would. There's certain things I may have done differently (for example: in the classic Doom games, the way enemies fly backward when you shoot them with a shotgun just never gets old) but I think they have captured the feel of the classic Doom games reasonably well.

I said a while back that due to the amount of time people have had to think "If I were making it..." it was always going to be disappointing to some people. The comments seem to reflect this.

I also said that due to it being a big name that it would likely be a game made by committee. In that regard I'm quite surprised as it does seem quite focused in its vision.

I'll be keeping an eye on it but I refuse to buy into hype anymore. I've been disappointed too many times.

@StokeMeAClipper: someone who gets it! I thought it too, was missing the same kinetic energy from the weapon impact. My favorite games are ones that exaggerate this to the nth degree. Hell, the wildly under rated Dead to Rights: Retribution had the feel down perfectly, where each shotgun blast, depending on the closeness to the enemy, could cause the enemy to fly backwards. I love it.

@0hmygandhi: I too am a big fan of the exaggerated impact of a shotgun (in the context of an over the top game). Doom is still the game I compare shotguns in games to as they just nailed it.

I'm also a big fan of ragdoll when it is done well (some games they go too limp and react more like a wet cloth the moment they are dead and others have no feeling of weight). Technologies that blend animation and physics like Euphoria are also very cool.

Doom needs Co-op again. Nothing like turning it up to nightmare and play with a friend or more would be better.

They got the feel of Wolfenstein just right, im pretty sure they can do it for doom, its just got to be fast, brutal, bloody and loud, with plenty of hidden areas and easter eggs to find of course.

The best bits from the original games were where it would be quiet for a moment then suddenly, doors would open everywhere and you would be flooded with enemies from every side and then all hell would break loose yeah!!

@plastiqueworld: Considering the influence from Brutal Doom that this game seems to be taking I sincerely doubt that.

The whole survival-doom feel of the third one was very mixed to say the least. Some enjoyed it, but it's far from the run and gun, ultra-violent, heavy metal album cover, style of the original games that have become the franchises identity.

Meh, i guess the game looks like it's fun for a few hours, but that's about it. The executions are going to get old fast, that much is certain. Not to mention that ugly color filter needs to go.

Meh Doom is one if those games that has a hard time translating well with the advancing technology. Each time they have to make up new cheesy plot lines to make it relevant. The first doom didn't even have a story...it was just guns and monsters in hallways. Now we're excavating Hell on Mars.

@Gravity_Slave: Are you trolling, or is this a serious comment? Cause if it is - maybe you shouldn't be commenting on a Doom article, because you clearly have little experience with this whole... "gaming" situation, don't know much about the industry or the franchise.

I have kind of a soft spot for DOOM, so maybe I'm a little optimistic about this reboot. It looks pretty similar to modern FPS games yet, but after watching some of that presentation I did note some similarities in style to the older games. I like how the screen slows down when you change guns, too.

I guess if I'm in the mood for another good story-based FPS next year, I will keep this game in mind.

So no we old school shooters

Wolfenstein

Doom

Shadow Warrior

So everybody is going to make old school shooters now?

How about a big developer develop a shmup.

Millions of bullets on the screen and no slow down.

Taking cover in a Doom game? Yeah... no. Glad they scrapped that version. I mean you legitimately had to take cover sometimes to avoid the chaingun soldiers because those hurt like hell, and taking cover was part of how you dealt with The Archvile and the skeletons that fired heatseekers, but most of Doom wasn't that way.

The slowness of the combat presented in the E3 footage concerns me a little bit, but naturally if it's a gameplay reveal and a first look at the new product, they probably don't want to be a speed demon about the approach so that they can actually show everything off. The thing that bugs me the most is the execution gimmick. It's pretty to look at but come on, that breaks the flow. I hope it's not a central mechanic to the way the game is supposed to be played. I wouldn't mind doing an execution on the last enemy of a big fight but I really don't want to be running from enemy to enemy executing each one. That would get tedious very quickly.

I don't know why people are honestly complaining so much about this game, from the video they showed.... yeah that's pretty much how doom worked, enemies stood there shooting at you like idiots writhing in their pain states occasionally. the first couple of levels only had a couple of enemies place sparingly around the map.

All they really did was give it a modern coat of paint and incorporate elements from the Mod Brutal Doom. Personally I think it looks promising, they're not trying to reinvent the wheel just making a different type of wheel.

I thought Rage was good. If it had any issues it was that it was too short and had no real DLC follow up.
