Doom co-creator making virtual reality games for Oculus Rift

Industry veteran involved with internal game development at Oculus VR; new "Crystal Cove" prototype unit revealed.

Industry veteran John Carmack, who co-created esteemed franchises like Doom and Quake, is working on game projects at Oculus VR, the team behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The news comes from an Engadget interview with executives at the company, who confirmed internal game development is happening at the outfit.

"[Carmack's] working on a lot of exciting tech," Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe said. "But, his heart and soul and history certainly lies in the game development side."

Carmack and his development team are working on unannounced software that will highlight the Oculus Rift's functionality. "You gotta eat your down dog food here, and develop internal content also," Iribe said.

Carmack quit id Software in November to take a full-time job at Oculus VR.

He explained that over the next year, Oculus VR will add a number of game development-focused positions to its careers page. "Pay attention to that page and you'll see more and more game developers showing up," Iribe said.

Oculus VR is also working with third-party developers for new software, and has even hired former Electronic Arts veteran David DeMartini to lead that charge.

"When we catch on to a nugget that seems like it should become a full experience, we may end up doing it ourselves. We may end up putting it out and working with a third-party studio that does," Iribe said. "We've actually started to engage with third-party studios like that through the relations group, the publishing group, as well as our own development."

Lastly, at CES 2014 this week, Oculus VR showed off its latest Oculus Rift prototype. Called "Crystal Cove," the unit offers improved resolution from its 1080p OLED screen. The 3D headset's most impressive innovation, however, is its new real-position tracking system that utilizes an external camera and promises to eliminate motion smearing.

how come when i login on this stupid page it doesnt keep me on the page i was on, instead it takes me back to the homepage and i lose and have to refind the article i want to post on. fix that crap its annoying

this product wont work, they have tried it time and time again. the idea and concept is cool and i wish it would work. but did these guys even do there research as to why it failed in the past? its because it messes up your vision badly and throws off your perception and that can lead to lawsuits. thats why the sega glasses and virtual boy was yanked from stores. thats also why 3d originally was stopped in gaming and sony basically reinvented it knowing that its bad for people but still did it anyways. see back in the day product companys were more cautious as to peoples health if they knew something was the least bit bad they wouldnt take the risk of putting it out. now a days they dont give a crap at all and stock shelves with energy drinks. 3d for example tricks your perception in your vision and when you turn it off or take glasses like these off your perception slowly goes back. a hour here and there isnt noticeable, but when you play for multiple hours, multiple days, over a long period of time over and over it takes longer and longer for your perception to go back to normal. which easily leads to a lawsuit. it will be better off if this product does fail, because if it doesnt fail and tons of kids play it for a enormous amount of time then they are going to have some major health issues

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah. I really wish he would concentrate on multi-platform games and focus on safe bets with content derived from focus group sessions to ensure quick and predictable financial returns. Then maybe he could sell many games and even pull in a piece of that Call of Duty pie.

All this working on something "new" and "different" just because it's "interesting" to him and he's "passionate" about it, that's all just a bunch of bullsh*t and he should really just give it up and quit wasting his life.

They could sell the rift, and put one test game out, and let the moders create some games. I would easily pay $300 to beta test this beast.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I've spent more on items less impressive, so no doubt. Though, if you're really that interested, you might be able to find a dev-kit some where. You don't really need to be a dev to get your hands on one. Good luck getting some one to let go of it though. :P I'm not too sure if they are still producing the dev-kit for "devs" to buy.

I really hope that something good comes from this company. I played VR games back in the early nineties and thought it was incredible, so, with today's technology, this could end up being the next big thing.

@Snootch21 like 3D? ive tried so many different TVs and glasses and they cannot reproduce it on a small screen...maybe this is great and it works but not many people will buy this for one reason only... you can not show it off...hence why apple is doing so well people buy them just because its an apple and a status symbol

<< LINK REMOVED >> Have you tried it? Virtually everyone that has tried the Rift has came away being amazed at it and not saying it was a "gimmick."

Unless you think being immersesd in a game is a gimmick, it also can be used for other thing soutside of games.

Well they do need some games. It could be great but if there is nothing to play that can use it who gives a crap? Well I guess I could shop on Amazon using it. The $300 price tag is a piss take just to search for DVDs and games though.
