Doom Eternal Had A Record-Breaking Launch [Update]

The id Software shooter triples the number of peak concurrent players compared to Doom 2016.

Doom Eternal is off to a Hell of a good start, it seems. The game's PC edition recorded almost 105,000 concurrent players on Steam recently after release. That's a massive number, and to put it into further context, it's more much higher than the reported all-time high concurrent player number for its predecessor, 2016's Doom. [Update: Bethesda has now announced that Doom Eternal set a launch sales record for the Doom franchise.]

Benji Sales on Twitter crunched some numbers and reports that 105,000 concurrent players on Steam is far and away the biggest release for Bethesda in recent years. It surpasses peak concurrent player numbers on Steam for Doom 2016 (31,623), Dishonored 2 (22,269), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (16,050), and The Evil Within 2 (9,846), according to Benji Sales' numbers.

Now Playing: Doom 2016 vs Doom Eternal Gun Comparisons

Steam's own public statistics page shows Doom Eternal had more than 85,000 peak concurrent players on March 22, making it one of the top 15 most popular games on the service.

Bethesda has yet to announce any official sales numbers for Doom Eternal. In the UK, it was reported that Doom Eternal's physical sales at launch were about a third lower than Doom 2016 over a similar period of time. However, this does not tell the full story of total unit sales because digital sales are not included in the UK report. And of course, with some shops closed in the UK, this also likely hurt physical sales and improved digital sales at the same time as people stay home.

GameSpot's Doom Eternal review in progress scored the game an 8/10, while other reviewers are scoring the game highly as well.

This game isn't afraid to kick your ass to demand you to be a better player. They don't make SP shooters like this anymore these days. I hope other shooter players that aren't from old school reach into this game with an open mind and see how this great game thrived without ADS, reload button, and pretentious 'realism'.

@santinegrete: Completely agree! "Old" gamer soon to be 40yo and played fps since the original wolfenstein on pc and it has been a complete frustration for years since shooters got big on consoles. Everything got slowed to cater to the controller setup and then watered down with fixed load outs, boring "real world" weapons and glorification of soldiers and military, regenerating health and ammo in abundance since it takes two shots to kill an enemy.
Finally a fast paced game that is challenging (unless you are playing on easy) and where you need to manage your ammo, health and armor and use different tactics and weapons against different enemies. If they hit you it counts and you can't run away behind a corner like a b*tch and get full health again. And it keeps you constantly moving, stay still and you're dead. Atleast on Nightmare and higher difficulty.
I just wish there was proper old school multiplayer similar to Quake 3 and the old unreal tournament games aswell. Fast and brutal with dogfights unlike the call of duties and similar games where it's more "I saw you first, you die" gameplay. In quake you can get hit with most weapons and survive and actually come up on top with skill anyway.

Hahaha!

Gotta love the "It seems..."

Looking at the review in progress video, I can't figure how could anyone play such a fast paced game with a gamepad...

If I'm to hop into such a game I want my mouse and keyboard combo!

It's been a blast, but it's also been kicking my butt. I don't remember the 2016 release being as tough, but then again, my response times are four years older too.

IMO , this is another game that got over hyped i tried it for a few hours and reached mission 3 and i found it to be a below average game and my reasoning is : killl glory-kill , kill- chainsaw , kill-burn em
was fun for about an hour then it became dull , maybe others enjoyed it but i sold it back

@Carpetfluff: I'm inclined to believe that, I was quite stalled in the level op mentioned.
