Doom Eternal Release Date Delayed Until 2020

You'll have to wait a little longer to hunt demons.

The follow-up to 2016's acclaimed Doom, Doom Eternal, has been delayed into 2020. Previously slated for release on November 22, Id Software and publisher Bethesda announced that Doom Eternal's release date is now set for March 20, 2020. Id also shared a few development updates on various Doom projects, including the Invasion mode, Nintendo Switch version, and the re-release of classic game Doom 64, which is now coming to more platforms than previously confirmed.

"Throughout the development of Doom Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board," the statement reads. "To make sure we're delivering the best experience--for Doom Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish--we've made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that Doom Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait."

Now Playing: Doom Eternal Release Date Delayed - GS News Update

Id didn't provide any specifics beyond that on what caused the delay, but we do now know that a portion of the game will not be available on release date. The Invasion mode multiplayer, which lets you jump into others' games as a demon, will be coming as a free update shortly after launch. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch version of Doom Eternal will be coming after the other platforms, with a separate date to be announced later.

Finally, the Doom 64 re-release, which was previously only announced for Nintendo Switch, is also now coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. That will also hit on March 20, 2020, because it's being added as a pre-order bonus for Doom Eternal.

With flops like fallout 76 and rage 2 its no wonder they are delaying this to improve their 2020 first Q earnings.

Game had been already announced gold. I guess going against RDR2 was enough to scare their launch.

I salute them for doing this. Very few publishers are willing to give more time to their devs to polish a game. If they delayed it then it's for good reasons. They figured out something big enough to required a couple of extra months to work, be it bugs or balancing issues or maybe networking or specific game modes, A.I. or map design or boss encounters or more technical things. Whatever it is, it means that they just can't "fix" or polish it enough without the delay.

People should be happy this can still happen in our day and age of rushed-out games that were only worked on for 2 years and come out barebones, unfinished and unpolished.

If it is for the best of the game, then I don't really mind the delay is only a few months

So now it's our fault they can't get their crap together lol. At a guess they looked at their opposition Borderlands 3's condition and panicked.

Tears! Rivers of tears! Ah well. If it takes more time to deliver a more awesome product then I get it, guess I'll check out borderlands 3 in the meantime.

While I do understand that games get delayed I was really looking forward to playing this in November as it was originally coming out a few days before my birthday. Oh well, already have pre-ordered it on PSN so I'll play it when it comes out in March.

@pauljeremiah: lol same it would have been a game of the year winner i think based on Doom 2016. Still the best modern day shooter by far.

No issue with a delay , better than a crappy broken release like we keep seeing from AAA devs and that people keep excusing like they have shares in the companies or sit on the board of directors or both.

I feel like competing with FF7R, WDL, VTMB2 and Cyberpunk 2077 shortly after is worse than competing with Death Stranding and Need For Speed.

@gamingdevil800: Right. Because the first couple of weeks for a game the most important, just like for a movie premier. After that, they may as well put it in a bargain bin.

And even with the delay, into a month with FFVIIR and Watch Dogs Legion, with Cyberpunk shortly after, they still can't get invasion mode in for launch?

@shadowwarrior4: Really, Doom 64 is more different to the first Doom than Doom 2 is. It looks, sounds, and feels different.

@shadowwarrior4: Oddly enough, I just played Doom 64 for the very first time last week on an HDMI-modded N64. It's the same concept as classic Doom but with its own unique levels, different graphics, and a couple of new weapons/enemies. Not bad at all, but the N64 control scheme certainly reminds you that it's a 20 year old game, so that will certainly need updating.

@knifebeater: the thing is called the real doom 3, sequel to doom2. I'm playing the Brutal version, you should check it out if you want something updated. Warning: it has a lot of gore and some brutal reimagination :D

@vikinglord666: Let's be real, you don't have a bridge to sell me and you're not making an observation that I haven't read elsewhere about a dozen times.

So fine, that's a great reason to delay too. But the notion that they wouldn't massage it a bit anyways regardless of the delay seems pretty... cynical? Naive? Do we have to choose one?

Sounds good to me. March is a suck month for game releases usually, so that works out pretty nicely.

Bummer, but, you know, do what you gotta do.

More time for Destiny this way. And maybe the new SWTOR expansion.

@mogan: Destiny has made me glad for the pushback. I wasn't sure how I'd find the time for both, now I can relax a bit and maybe work some Street Fighter into the mix.

4 months isn't a terrible delay. It'll probably be worth the wait.

Was really looking forward to this game at the end of the year but this saves me a little money and lets me enjoy some of the other releases. But damn early 2020 is going to be jam packed. There's going to be a handful of games that I'll either have to wait on or skip all together. Not enough time or money.

That’s somewhat unfortunate but I’d rather them take the extra time to deliver and polished product than rush one out just to meet some arbitrary deadline.

While the gamer in me is still somewhat disappointed by this news another part of me is a little bit relieved thanks to all the other big name games that are going to be vying for my attention in the next few weeks (Death Stranding, etc…).

Let’s just hope this is good news that when Doom eternal launches it will be worth the wait.

Fine by me. The bar was set pretty high with the last game, so it's better to take the time and polish this one until it shines.

I'm ok with this. Now you can't use that yearly FPS that goes always there as an excuse to not try something better.

@santinegrete: There is nothing better than Doom though. There lies the problem except perhaps if they release Cyberpunk a few months early :)

LOL dang, that was unexpected. I was looking forward to this November but hey, delay is always a good thing in my books to make sure the game is perfect as it can get.
