Double Fine's Broken Age Will Probably Break Even, Studio Head Says

Game development is expensive.

Developer Double Fine's latest adventure game, Broken Age, had a very successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $3.3 million. But the game quickly became more expensive than that during development, and Double Fine had to put a lot more money into it.

Now, a couple months after Broken Age Act 2's release, the studio has revealed that the game is on track to just barely make back that money.

In the final installment of the Broken Age development documentary (which you can watch above), studio head Tim Schafer explained that the cost to make the game far exceeded the amount that the Kickstarter brought in. This resulted in Schafer and his team having to shift his expectations and predict that the game wouldn't turn a profit.

"My expectation with Broken Age in the end was just to break even," he said in the video. "With Kickstarter, the risk is gone of losing money on it, so you know you've broken even if you just make the game to that amount of money. But we made it [for], like, twice as much almost as we got in. Or more. So we will just about make that back."

But even though Broken Age won't be a huge financial success, Schafer said that crowdfunding was a good experience and it allowed Double Fine to make games without turning to publishers. "The biggest change is that we don't need the publishers anymore," he explained. "It used to be [that there was] no money in the world outside of publishers, and I think crowdfunding is here to stay, I think it's hopefully going to grow. In my dream world it would be big enough to fund AAA games and it would be the way we fund all games going forward."

Broken Age Act 2 launched in April, more than a year after the first act. The studio split the game into two parts and sold the first half to help fund development of the second. You can read our review of Act 1 here and Act 2 here.

No. Kickstarter is another stage of pathological economy, putting all the risks on society. Publishers and creators must take risks!

@megatronx2: I agree with you, publishers only fund games if they see profit in it. If Kickstarter ended up being the way forward for investing in game development, then my belief is they must offer a profit sharing model with their backers for every game that turns a profit.

To bad they are breaking even, I wanna see this developer go under, Tim Schafer doesn't know what hes doing anymore.

he cant explain why he wasted money from multiple projects hosting multiple lavish parties, and hiring Aborted DJ's like Phil Fish

I'm guessing there is little hope for a sequel or a new point and click game?

@pboontap: I won't argue with you the benefits of steam but just tell you that you're missing out then.

As far as advertising there's been a couple sales on the game but that's about it. I rarely hear anything about it.

@Zorlac: i know i am, but GOG has plenty for me to play, and i'd just as soon hand my money to them.

i saw a great deal about the game before the first act came out, but that could have been pre-release press coverage. which leaves the disturbing conclusion that it took 6,6 (ish) million dollars to make something that pixar could have made over a long weekend.

Easy to "break even" when the budget from your game is paid by begging on the internet.

After what the pulled with Space Base df-9 and him supporting SJW's I just cannot and will not support this studio anymore. It's a shame really. Double Fine just don't handle money very well.

When you're not *really* a startup and paying your employees 50k+ a year, breaking even on it is not bad. Just more proof Kickstarter is designed for small start ups, not established people in the industry looking to circumvent normal business practices of getting loans.

@jamesa984: not only getting loans, but also selling their work to a publisher. they tried to avoid interference from EAs and ubis on their work. too bad it didn't work out that well, the game isn't that good anyway

You have a studio in the most expensive part of the states. It's a wonder anything actually gets to release.

I never thought I'd say this, but I feel sorry for your accountant.

@DeadMercenary: Best reason ever. Also a good reason to be careful of buying early access games. They showed they couldn't be trusted because they left that game in a broken state.

@Joey2cool: No thanks. How about a remake of the first game that's a hack and slash as promised, and not a half assed RTS?

I'd rather have Full Throttle 2, but it'd have to be a point and click game, like the first.

@Joey2cool: Not sure if Double Fine owns the IP rights for that. Double Fine published the PC version, but that could just be the digital publishing rights on this one platform. I presume EA still owns the actual IP.

And a game like Brütal Legend is...it had songs and even people who made said songs. And things. And stuff. It cost about $25 million. I was going to say Double Fine could possibly consider a spiritual sequel on Kickstarter, but that kind of doesn't seem entirely feasible.

Schafer's considered a spinoff though. Which...he wouldn't be able to do without owning the IP, so...maybe Double Fine does own it? Or maybe he's just blurting out fantasies. Maybe I'll just ask him.

Anyway, probably don't hold your breath on that one.

@legatusinvisus: That would cost more money they might not make back unless Microsoft is interested in helping out, which apparently they're not.

And what's with the needless insult? They're not purposely preventing an Xbox release just to spite you, if that's what you thought. Most creators would love to accommodate for more people to experience their works.

@ps3gamer1234: Schafer royally fucked up by making Brutal Legend an RTS on a console (fail fail FAIL) instead of the Zelda Clone With Rock and Roll they marketed to everyone.

Blew up in his face, and the publishers don't trust him anymore. Activision publicly called him out too:

@ps3gamer1234: They tried that. Didn't go great in terms of business.
If they'd spent their time since Brütal Legend pitching to AAA publishers instead of switching to self-funding with Stacking, Costume Quest etc. there might not have been a Double Fine today.

They'll still do stuff like that I'm sure, contracted thingies, they've just generally stopped actively spending resources trying to make it happen.
