Dragon Age 4 Teased With First Trailer

The Dread Wolf rises, apparently.

35 Comments

After teasing an announcement coming sometime in December, BioWare took the wraps off of its next Dragon Age game--potentially Dragon Age 4--during The Game Awards. A brief teaser trailer showed some slow pans across artifacts, and a hashtag that likely hints at a central story figure. It read, "The Dread Wolf Rises."

The teaser was so brief it's hard to glean much more from it, but with the announcement official, BioWare is likely to be starting up the promotional cycle and sharing more details. The last Dragon Age game, Dragon Age Inquisition, won the top honor of Game of the Year at 2014's Game Awards. The tagline "The Dread Wolf Rises" is likely a reference to Fen'Harel the elven god of betrayal in the Dragon Age universe.

Now Playing: Dragon Age - Official 'The Dread Wolf Rises' Teaser Trailer | The Game Awards 2018

BioWare had been teasing a Dragon Age related announcement in the lead up to the show and, as of late, had been hinting at the future of the franchises that many of its fans have come to love. Along with Dragon Age, the studio has said it is working on the future of Mass Effect.

In a blog post, executive producer Mark Darrah confirms the new Dragon Age game has been in the works for "quite a while." He said BioWare won't share more details now, but he did confirm the game is being made by some "core" Dragon Age veterans who also worked on Jade Empire and Baldur's Gate. Darrah teased that the team is "hard at work exploring ways to push BioWare's storytelling to the next level."

Game director Matthew Goldman, meanwhile, said in his own statement that BioWare has put together its "strongest team yet" to work on the new Dragon Age. He called it the "most epic quest ever."

"Making players into heroes of their own stories has been my real-life quest since Baldur's Gate," he said. "Over the years I've taken on increasing challenges: building vast living worlds, devising fun party-based combat and illustrating fantastic stories. Now, I’m honored and excited to continue BioWare's rich legacy of colorful companions, romance and epic choices in my favorite fantasy franchise."

This.......actually gave me goosebumps. This is where the heart of Bioware should be. Root themselves in hackle-raising lore of their best franchises and DIG and DIG and BUILD something epic and enigmatic. Get after it!!!

Bioware needs to think back, like way back, to the reason why anyone is still interested in this franchise at this stage. Remember that DA: Origins was a literal nothing when it was first announced - no-one knew what it was, because it was a brand new IP - but Bioware nonetheless somehow made us interested in it and actually delivered. They need to channel that time and realise this series is long in the tooth at this point and imo urgently requires a lot of retrospection (and perhaps more importantly introspection) in what made us love this franchise in the first place. DA: I was just ok for me, the third in the series but also the third best game (yes DA 2 is better than DA: I imo). These games haven't been getting better. An announcement for (the worst case scenario) "Dragon Age: Online" isn't going to work for me; if that happens this fan is out.

It's the Lyrium Idol from DA2 in case anybody forgot everything about that game like I'm gonna assume most people who played it have.

@WarGreymon77: I strangely agree. I played all Dragon Ages and beat them several times, but I enjoyed DAII better than I did Inquisition.

@mistervulpes: Inquisition was one of the worst games I've ever played. DA2 was a bad game, sure, but at least I could slog through it more than one time. Inquisition was so boring that during my second playthrough I just gave up and never looked back. On the other hand, Origins was a 9/10 game and neither of the sequels can hold a candle to it, or even to Awakening for that matter.

@WarGreymon77:

Origins is the standard, sure, but I liked Inquisition.

I used to come to BioWare games for the characters and I found Inquisitions characters more interesting by a huge margin.

DAII took the parts I liked about BioWare games and cut them all out. Customisation was hamstrung, combat was over simplified and environments were dinky and used over and over.

Inquisition was a little big but at least everything was original in the main.

I liked the war table because I liked reading through everything and there were plenty of great moments. Like the siege of haven, Orlesian ball, mage and Templar unique quests.

It was good, I liked it.

Obviously now, I’m not sure I still like BioWare games because.....Andromeda....shudder.

@WarGreymon77: no it wasn't. I've played all three dragon age games and in my opinion DA2 was the weakest of the three.

@illusivepickledonionman: I agree. Weak story (until the last hour or two), sterotypical/annoying/boring characters, heavily re-used enviroments, basically hack-and-slash type combat (until the last couple of fights)

@jach: You basically described Inquisition for me, but except reused environments. The environments were big and empty. Exploration was a waste of time (no interesting quests, NPCs, rewards, etc) and it was such a chore. It was an "open world" gone wrong. The combat is basically hack and slash too, did not even have to use the tactics menu, not even for a dragon. Had the most uninteresting companions too imo (minus Solas and Varric). XD They had their stereotypical characters as well, but...I'm not going to get into it (it might start a political debate or something).

@Sakia1990:

There was plenty of unique, interesting loot to find off the beaten path, and barring Sera, the companions were leagues more interesting.

@mistervulpes: As a person who has played TES (from Morrowind to Skyrim) and The Witcher series, I know what worthwhile exploration is, and Inquisition has none of that. Whatever little loot you get, sucks and was not really worth it. No interesting NPCs or quests either. Most of the new companions were boring to me. I did not care for them at all tbh. :\

@Sakia1990:

Oh yeh, totally, the exploration is nowhere near on par with TES or Wild Hunt.

That’s not why you used to play a BioWare game. But there was loot to find if you were already enjoying the world anyway (which I was)

The companion thing is where we diverge from each other in our opinions. It’s not a bad thing. It’s fine ;)

@jach: It was a LOOOONG set of chores to get to that last few hours, but Lynda Carter's voice acting alone made the trip worthwhile. Utterly chilling and memorable. Amazing stories and themes from all the games and novels all came to a head there.

But that slog of getting there.... oof.

Well, that wasn't much of anything but...

I know a lot out there have lost faith in Bio-ware (and for good reason.) but if there is even a sliver of the old developer in there hopefully it will be manifest in this title.

I have no idea why they lost faith though honestly. They had one badly received game (though I thought Andromeda was a good game just not great) and now everybody is acting like they pulled a Fallout 76 or something. They have given us some of the greatest RPGs of all time so why not give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

@videogameninja: I'm one of those who lost faith. Although I did enjoy Inquisition and Andromeda (not the same Bioware, I know, but still), I have noticed how they've lost people over there and how it's noticeable regarding the writing.

EA also has a tendency to push things on their devs, why the co-op mode showed up (with lootboxes), and I doubt Bioware is able to handle the current pressure, so I'm betting one of the next 2 games will be horrible and fail, if not both of them,
this could very well cause a assimilation of half of Bioware, like EA typically does, firing the rest.
I think it's a somewhat safe bet, as I doubt EA has been happy ever since ME3.

@videogameninja: Yeah, it was a giant tease and people are right to be skeptical but apparently veteran devs are working on the game so crossed fingers. (kinda wish MS buys them out too, Bioware can get that sweet independent deal)

@videogameninja: I was hoping to see more than just that. Already knew the game was coming- they confirmed as much months ago. This was just a glorified "it's official" which again they already did months ago.

So for me the new Obsidian game was the best announced game- it was actually shown and releases before the new systems (presumably).
