Dragon Age 4 Will Reportedly Not Release On Xbox One And PS4

Dragon Age 4 will reportedly only launch on current-gen consoles and PC.

Dragon Age 4 will reportedly not release on the PS4 or Xbox One, instead only launching on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The upcoming Bioware RPG does not have a set release date or window.

This report is coming from GamesBeat, which cited Dragon Age's lead player designer Daniel Nordlander's Linkedin page, which lists the title as "Dragon Age (PS5/Xbox Series X+S/PC)." GamesBeat also verified this information with a separate, unnamed source. Dragon Age reportedly won't be launching before 2023, so it's not too surprising that the EA will be ready to leave the last-gen consoles behind.

While EA is offering cross-gen versions of its sports titles and Battlefield 2042, the most recent Bioware release, Mass Effect Legendary: Edition, only offered last-gen versions that could be played on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility. Based on this report, it seems likely that EA will begin to offer current-gen only games sometime in the next two years. As the number of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles that have been purchased increases, it stands to reason that the need to release cross-gen titles may decrease.

Bioware is currently working on Dragon Age 4 and the next Mass Effect, with Dragon Age expected to release first. Dragon Age 4 also reportedly had multiplayer components at one point in development but those were cut in favor of a single-player experience.

Good! They need to not do what they did with the last generation. They need to put all the focus into making it next gen. Or I guess current gen, now.

I say that as someone who doesn’t even have a new console yet. I’m totally willing to wait. That pissed me off with the beginning of the PS4/Xbox One era.

It was like a year or two that they continued making the games for both generations, and it held the games back.

I’m annoyed that God of War is coming to PS4. I hope they put in the work to really set the PS5 version apart. I hope to keep hearing that these big games will be skipping the last generation.

It should still release on the One X because that was always marketed as a premium cross-gen console with true Native 4K.

@vaativids: I feel for ya, I have a xb1x, and for 2 short years it was glorious (especially running games of an external usb3 SSD drive); but theres just to much different hardware wise between xb1x and new consoles.

It's like if you have a PC where all your components are 7 years old (motherboard, cpu, memory, etc) and you only had upgraded your gpu. Versus new ones being leaps beyond with motherboard, cpu and memory.

I just upgraded from a 8 yr old Intel i5 setup to a amd 5600X setup with nvme gen 4 storage, but same 1070 gpu... and it's not even close. Despite the same gpu, having these new "core pc components" is WAY faster than old stuff.

Anyway, that's my long poor analogy... everything BUT the GPU in the xb1x is SUPER old (in in fast moving hardware world). It truly is a last gen... just with a great gpu.

To bad we can't take its GPU out and install it in an Xbox Series S! Get SOME benefit from our legacy investment.

Separately, with Xbox GamePass streaming, OG XO players will be able to stream these better versions than their HW can support.

It's a good call. I think that's primarily what hurt CDPR with Cyberpunk. The fragmenting of trying to make the game for newer more powerful systems and still make it work on 7-8 year old consoles. Granted, they had been working on it for a while, but still. The game was too ambitious for the Xbox One/PS4 generation.

Good. No point holding the game back for old consoles.

By the time the game comes out,the old gen consoles will be out of the window/not supported anyway.
I expect 2022 having some cross gen titles but none in 2023.

@sladakrobot: Yep. I think the COVID outbreak and the electronics shortage even extended their lifespan a year plus. But by 2023 they are sure to be outdated. As for Dragon Age 4, I expect to see it like 2024/2025.

Kind of a shame for some given that the new consoles don't really have a whole lot of users yet, but considering how Inquisition ran on 360 and PS3 it's probably for the best.

@juliano001: Uh... what do you think Dragon Age is? They've consistently been one of the most progressive large-developer western RPGs since the start of the series.

Xbox One consoles will eventually be able to play Xbox Series exclusives via XCloud streaming so all you will need is a good internet connection and a Gamepass Ultimate subscription which includes EA Play.

I hate that the more our technology evolves, the more years it requires to make a current-gen game. But, I am willing to wait on Dragon Age. I do wish Bioware would upgrade Dragon Age Origins Awakening like they did with Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, but oh well!!

@Jimbowesker: It's EA, not the technology.

By the time it comes out maybe both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will actually be more readily available instead of the constant short supply going on now.

@igroku: It’s your favorite series, but you want them to hurry? Do you actually play video games? Hurrying is the worst thing they can do. You should want them to take as long as they need, even if that ends up being 10 years. Unless you just don’t care about the quality of it.
