Dragon Age: The Veilguard Not Getting Expansions, Team Shifts To Next Mass Effect

According to a report, BioWare has "shifted entirely" to the next Mass Effect.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard studio BioWare has now seemingly "shifted entirely" to the next Mass Effect. As such, the studio is apparently not planning any downloadable expansions for The Veilguard.

BioWare confirmed these details in an interview with Rolling Stone, though there were no direct quotes from the team attesting to this or offering any other details. Dragon Age: Inquisition, for comparison, welcomed eight total expansion packs after launch, spread across single-player and multiplayer.

According to a previous report from Bloomberg, developers working on the next Mass Effect were pulled off the project to assist with getting The Veilguard out the door. Staffers from Iron Man studio Motive were also re-assigned to The Veilguard to help finalize the game for release, the report said.

BioWare creative director John Epler didn't reveal any new information about the next Mass Effect in the interview, but he discussed the possibility of BioWare trying its hand again at multiplayer. The Veilguard originally had a live-service design before getting rebooted as a single-player game. It remains to be seen what could happen for the next Mass Effect, but Epler said he loves the "focus that single-player can give you."

"It's possible to tell a strong story in a multiplayer game. Final Fantasy XIV does an excellent job," he said. "Multiplayer also introduces some complications around world states. I make a giant choice in my world, and the world changes."

The Veilguard launched on October 31 and enjoyed the best-ever debut for a BioWare game on Steam, reaching 89,000+ peak concurrent users.

GameSpot's Dragon Age: The Veilguard review in progress scored the game a 7/10. If you're just getting into the game, you might want to check out GameSpot's The Veilguard guides hub.

As for the Mass Effect series, BioWare is currently at work on the next entry in the spacefaring series. It remains to be seen when more information about the game could be revealed, but some are predicting news could come as soon as this week. That's because the Mass Effect holiday--N7 Day--takes place this Thursday, November 7. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

What a flop....

At least it made us play ORIGINS again just to go down memory lane...Sad.

Awful development team is dropping garbage game: "Thank god!"

Same awful team is working on ruining Mass Effect: "God dammit!"

Tell me you have no faith in your game without telling me you have no faith in your game.

@eggshensix: Isn't no DLC, everything in the game at launch, what gamers usually say they want?

@mogan: Sure, but this isn't about what gamers want—it's about what the studio thinks they can sell them.

@pixelante85: So, gamers want more DLC sold separately? Weird.

@mogan: deflecting because the game is an obvious disappointment, which is why they are scrubbing DLC, not because of some virtuous reason lol

@pixelante85: If that’s what you want to believe, I guess. Veilguard isn’t great, but if they were planning DLC, it’d have been in development before launch and there’d probably have been a season pass. This sounds like, at most, they were waiting to see how the game sold before green lighting DLC development, which would indicate Veilguard is at least a full game with nothing removed to sell separately.

Don't mind the no expansions thing. For massive RPGs, I generally just want to have one big, complete playthrough, and if I know there's DLC coming, I don't want to play until that's out so I don't miss anything.

If they're moving the Veilguard team over to work on Mass Effect, I hope they don't bring the writers with them; Veilguard's writing is pretty bad.

@dmblum1799: I'm sure it is, but it still needs to improve because it's holding BioWare's games back in a major way.

Good...the whole expansions thing is overdone and just a milking thing anyway. Release complete games and then move on to the next one is something the majority of people have been demanding for a while, frequently in the context of pointing out how it is so often the case that the expansions/DLC tends to look like it was just carved out of the game so they could sell you something a second time and/or that many people assume it meant they diverted resources away from the main game experience.
