Dragon Age: The Veilguard Rights Inquisition's Greatest Sin

BioWare's priorities are in the right place for its fourth foray into Dragon Age.

After 10 years, BioWare is finally letting you kiss Lace Harding, the dwarven scout who acts as your initial eyes and ears whenever your character uncovers a new area in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Though you can flirt with her numerous times and establish a strong rapport with Harding, she is not a romantic option in Inquisition--she's not even an official companion. That all changes in Dragon Age: The Veilguard--previously titled Dreadwolf--as Harding is not only one of the seven recruitable companions in the game, but she's a romance option, too.

Harding is, without a doubt, one of the best parts about Inquisition. Sarcastic and playful, she's willing to trade a few verbal barbs with the Inquisitor if the two establish a bond, and she's a bright and shining spot even during Inquisition's darkest moments, sticking with you and the Inquisition no matter where you choose to go. Fans have been pining for the cute dwarf ever since Inquisition launched in 2014, and I've often wished she could have had a larger part to play in Dragon Age's story. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she'll be a major player in the fourth Dragon Age game.

Now Playing: Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Official 20 Minute Gameplay Reveal

At Summer Game Fest, I got to see the opening hour of The Veilguard played by game director Corrine Busche, who answered many of my questions about the upcoming RPG, including how romance would play a part in it. Unlike previous Dragon Age games, which included romantic partners of various sexualities and ancestral preferences, all of the companions in The Veilguard are pansexual and don't seem to have any racial preferences--you can smooch them regardless of who your character, Rook, is--so long as you raise your relationship status high enough.

Busche made sure to clarify that The Veilguard's companions have been written to be pansexual, not player-sexual. The romantic options don't reshape themselves to satisfy the player character's gender and sexuality. Instead, they have their own hopes, dreams, and desires informed by who they are, and if they can't find what they want with the main character, they'll find it elsewhere. For example, Busche warned me that if my Rook didn't go for Harding (as if, right?), she might find solace with one of the game's other companions in particular, akin to how Garrus and Tali explore their attraction to one another and end up together in Mass Effect 3 if Shepard does not romance either of them as, regardless of who Shepard is, both Garrus and Tali are straight.

The Veilguard seems to put a lot more emphasis on building relationships with your companions than in previous Dragon Age games. Though your companions will unlock their core abilities over time, the only way to earn special upgrades to these skills is to develop their relationship with Rook. I didn't get to see these upgrades in action during the preview, but I did see how The Veilguard's first two companions--Harding and Neve--perform in a fight. Harding fits the role of a long-range sniper, a rogue initially armed with a bow and arrow, while Neve is a detective and mage who specializes in close-range cold magic.

According to Busche, you'll meet and recruit every companion by the end of the first act, which should take players about nine to 10 hours--that's a tinge faster than the 15 or so hour recruitment time in Inquisition, which makes sense given The Veilguard only has seven companions and Inquisition has nine.

Players will recruit seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, including Bellara, shown here.
Players will recruit seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, including Bellara, shown here.

"Faster" seems to be the name of the game for The Veilguard, which looks to do for Dragon Age what Andromeda did for Mass Effect. Your perspective as a player has tightened even further--especially once combat kicks off--shifting to a view more akin to an over-the-shoulder shooter. As spells fly and swords clash, combat seems to pull you into the thick of battle where you must deftly dodge out of the way of an enemy's telegraphed wind-up to land a well-timed combo of your own. Whether you choose to go the way of the warrior, rogue, or mage, you have an assortment of speedy attacks, explosive heavy-hitting abilities, long-range shield breakers, and quick dodges.

In the opening hour, each battle wrapped up in a matter of moments, and even though Busche pointed out that a tactical menu exists to pause the action and direct Rook's allies, it didn't really look like that was even needed, almost like the feature existed as more of a reminder of what Dragon Age used to be, not what it is now. Real-time combat is not new for Dragon Age, but this is the first time I've seen a game in the series seem to lack much in the way of tactics. For combat at least, The Veilguard appears to lean more toward the action half of action-RPG.

Combat isn't the only thing that's different this time around. The Veilguard takes you to Tevinter, a never-before-seen location in Thedas. Unlike the more fantastical locations the franchise has visited so far, Tevinter has more of an arcanepunk vibe, incorporating themes of industrialization. My first look at Tevinter reminded me of Dungeons & Dragons' Eberron, where magic is common enough to be used by everyday people, not just powerful spellcasters. Neon billboards illuminated paved city streets and dark alleys like the backdrop of a noir detective story, and arcane runes powered the city like a faux-electricity. Even though The Veilguard takes place just after Inquisition, it feels like we've been thrown forward a full century to a more modern era.

Like in past BioWare games, choosing which allies to bring on missions can be about tactics or relationships--or both.
Like in past BioWare games, choosing which allies to bring on missions can be about tactics or relationships--or both.

The game picks up in Tevinter at what feels like the end of another adventure, as Rook--with the help of Varric--are on the tail of Solus, working to prevent him from fully destroying the Veil, an act that would surely destroy all life across Thedas. Harding joins their troupe and aids Rook and Varric in meeting with Neve, a detective also on Solus's trail and the trio eventually catches up to the fallen elven god in the midst of a ritual that is tearing the Veil apart.

The mission showcases plenty of Dragon Age staples (combat, choice-driven dialogue, companion approval) while also revealing what 10 years away have done for the series' visuals. Inquisition isn't an ugly game by any means, but The Veilguard is a cut above its predecessor with special care to particle effects and character animations. It looks like a damn pretty game, and I can't wait to get lost in it with my favorite forward scout at my side.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC this fall.

I am intrigued as to why gamespot felt the need to delete my post questioning why anyone cares about the romance system in a game about the end of the world. All i pointed out was that it is stupid that you should be worried about who warms your tent when the world is about to end. I’ll take a tarnished than any of these DA Don Juans as a hero any day. BW is more concerned with making a dark fantasy romance sim than a good game i guess.

Yet another game that will go on my "Buy It When It's On Sale For 50% Or Less" list.

I wonder if DAV will be better or worse than DA2.

I didn't hate what I saw of Veilguard, but it didn't blow me away either. It's just unfortunate that they're launching a year after BG3. It really looks like EA bet that CRPGs were a dying genre, and then the biggest game of last year shows they were way wrong but not it's too late to change the direction of the next entry in what used to be their biggest CRPG franchise.

I was a huge Bioware fanboy and absolutely loved every game they put out... Well those days are gone and they are a complete trash company now like Blizzard.

While I think is completly stupid and useless to make an article this long about the sexuality of companion characters in the new Dragon Age game, considering how much about the gameplay, looks and story is actuall creating such a big fuzz on the internet, I am also ok with the idea of being able to f*ck em all if I want to.

Like, in Cyberpunk 2077 it was so frustating not being able to romance Judy as a male V.

This is not Dragon Age. The team that made Dragon Age is gone. This is another team that made this game and slapped Dragon Age on it.

@merkhava: I mean, the teams that made most games from 15 plus years ago are pretty, if not totally different today.

I assume Veilguard looks like an action game because EA assumed CRPGs were an old, mostly dead genre. Post-BG3, I'm sure they're kicking themselves for not making the next entry in their originally CRPG franchise another CRPG, but I'll bet Veilguard was too far into development to pivot by the time BG3 became a smash hit.

This game looks like trash. The visuals are the worst I've seen in a long time and I guess they were like remember that shallow game dragon age 2 let's base our combat on that and MMOs and have people button mash while waiting for cool downs and dodging red ground circles.

With several paragraphs about the romancing options, and lesser, "faster" combat and story elements, hopefully Dragon Age won't turn out purely a Dating Sim after all...

It actually looks good since it is early game and you don’t have all your abilities. Let’s hope for a Bioware comeback. They are the creators of KOTOR and Mass Effect, which I played so many times.

You HAVE to romance a character to unlock their skill upgrades? Like these aren't *bonus* perks tied to the romance? These are upgrades to their CLASS skills? You have to be kidding me.

What is even going on here? Look at these screens. This doesn't look anything like Dragon Age. This is, for real, FORTNITE MEETS DRAGON AGE. Does anyone working on Dragon Age actually remember Dragon Age?

@aiglos1978: I don't think you have to romance them, though. It says:

"the only way to earn special upgrades to these skills is to develop their relationship with Rook."

I'm guessing it's like earning friendship in BG3 and DA2, where you can get their approval up through respect and doing their companion quests, etc.

Bioware's priorities are in the right place?

-reads on and sees the article is about how all of the romance interests are pansexual.

Bioware's priorities aren't on the right planet.

All companions are pansexuals? Are you kidding me? In Inquisition they have all different sexual orientation who was chosen according to their personnalities. So now we have less character development and depth? They like to talk about diversity but they sure don't care about sexual diversity.

@wesker010484: Listen, this game is trash, but that's the wrong thing to be upset about. Pansexual, in this context, simply means that you can romance any character regardless of how you make your own character. The problem gamers have had with so many other games is that who you can/can't romance is restricted to how you make your character. This removes all those restrictions. You can create whatever character you want and still pursue any character romantically. How is that a bad thing?

@merkhava: I feel characters are a lot more unique when they have different preferences. Like in Mass Effect companions can be straight, gay or bi, and whether you can romance them depends on your gender and their preference. It feels more immersive than just making everyone available to you regardless of who you are.

@merkhava: Simply because not everyone are pansexual. I find plain stupid to not restrict some characters to a specific sexual orientation like they did in the first game and third games. It ruins my immersion in the game and my interest in playing the game again with the opposite gender.

Whoa, what the actual frack is this article about? Been playing every BioWare rpg since KOTOR - and the sexual proclivities of party members strictly isn’t a defining mechanic of gameplay. These are video games: not life. Maybe handle the ins and outs of relational satisfaction in real life, and let video games be defined by their gameplay mechanics. I do not care how fake character’s imagined spare emotional bandwidth is spent, nor should I be expected to.

@whataboutnoah: I don't particularly mind party members not getting upgrades to their skillset or whatever if they don't like you. I don't mind that, it's sort of like our party members cba to grow as they're stuck with you and don't actually like you.

The trailer was god awful, but a trailer isn’t a game so it doesn’t really matter and doesn’t affect my impression of the game.

That said , the actual GAMEPLAY trailer was bad. Definitely AAA and polished, but the combat looks shallow and repetitive. I thought the writing was super weak. Nothing interesting was said and I never felt any tension. I’m beginning to think this might actually be the end of

BioWare. They can’t afford another fumble. We’ll see what happens but I have zero interest in this game now. Was super pumped before the reveal, was dying for another dragon age

@Chutebox: It's because a large part of the fanbase really enjoy the romance, myself included. It's a nice addition to the RP part of RPGs.
Regarding sexual preferences, it's not something that bothers me personally but I can imagine it does to other people, especially from the LGBTQ+ community, where sexual preference can have an impact on their daily lives.

"The Veilguard, which looks to do for Dragon Age what Andromeda did for Mass Effect."

Ouch! That's a bit of a downer!

I think it looks better than I expected. My main concern would be that it is emphasizing the relationships too much. I don't want romance in my games, and get a bit put off by how railroaded the player is towards romance.

@ironhorse89: Gameplay looks trash. First they took out the tactics. Then they removed meaningful dialogue and replaced it with the Mass Effect wheel. Then they took out the RPG style stats. Now they took away your abilities. It looks like you're limited to being able to use three abilities per character. It's literally Mass Effect, but worse now because at least Mass Effect had interesting alien characters.

Combat looked like a worse version of FF16. Veilguard is an empty shell. There is nothing Dragon Age about it except for the name. I don't even care about the story it's been so long.

Oh and let's not forget the fact that they did the presentation on a PS5, because that's where the Dragon Age fan base is apparently. Not the decades long PC crowd that used to live for Bioware releases.

Sad what's happened to Bioware. Dragon Age Origins was great in bringing back Baldur's Gate party based combat when it had vanished from gaming, but the two sequels inexplicably abandoned that. Inquisition's MMO lameness level of quests (kill 10 bugbears) absolutely killed it for me, plus it was really easy. Sounds like this new game is going full ARPG with no tactics whatsoever. Fortunately Owlcat and games like Pillars of Eternity have picked up the tactical RPG torch.
