Square Enix has officially announced the eleventh entry in the Dragon Quest series for release on Sony's PlayStation 4, Nintendo's 3DS, and Nintendo NX.

The announcement was made during a special livestream, where it was also revealed that the PS4 version will be built on Unreal Engine 4.

The Nintendo 3DS version, meanwhile, seems to be developed in collaboration with a third-party studio. Interestingly, the 3DS version displays the game in a modern visual style akin to the Nintendo DS entries in the series, while the bottom screen takes a top-down visual style reminiscent of earlier NES entries. The presentation of the battles will also be styled appropriately to match the two visual styles.

Since the stream was hosted in Japanese, specifics on both versions game are unavailable for now, however, Square Enix is expected to provide more information soon. GameSpot will provide an update as soon as it is available.

During the stream, Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest X, a massively multiplayer online RPG entry in the series, will be released for PlayStation 4. The game was previously only available for Wii U, 3DS, and PC.

Although Square Enix confirmed Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest X will be released on Nintendo NX, it did not provide any specific details on those versions of the game.

Take a look at some screenshots of the game below. It is worth noting that these were captured from the stream itself.

I'll be honest I've been playing my ps2 more then my ps4 and that's because of the massive jrpg collection it has. Let the ps4 be like the ps2 and get some jrpg gems in there

yea cool open world unreal engine 4 graphics and then it gets ruined after phasing into an archaic battle system where you dont even see your characters on screen fighting on top of that.

I was all excited for the PS4 iteration. Haven't really followed DQ since PS2 era because I don't own handhelds. Then at the very end of the video they are explaining how all the previous DQ's never made it stateside. Wah Wah Wahhhhh. There goes my excitement.

As a die hard DQ fan I must say this is a huge tease knowing SquareEnix has little plan to release these games in the USA.

"Since the stream was hosted in Japanese, specifics . . . are unavailable for now."

C'mon Gamespot, you deal in an industry with a huge Japanese component--you can't hire someone who speaks/reads/writes Japanese? I've seen so many articles over the years where their information is limited because they don't understand the language. Then hire a translator!

Love the series. Given that I won't be able to play it on my current 3DS (which is bs but whatever) this game might actually make me bite the bullet and get a PS4.....if it comes out in NA of course.

A random thought just occurred to me.... I don't ever want to hear another person talk negatively about another gaming franchise for milking the franchise until they've had a good hard look at this series. 11 games?! Nuts!

@smoke_dog_4ever: The Dune Series is Massive. I lost track of how many books Brian Herbert has published for it now... That's way more offensive than Dragon Quest (which likely has better continuity)

@smoke_dog_4ever: I'm not even sure what you're trying to say, but if you think 11 main games over THIRTY YEARS is "milking it", then you are pretty ridiculous. There are plenty of MUCH worse offenders out there.

@smoke_dog_4ever: well.... final fantasy? Which was good until they started making sequels of 10... honestly, 10-2, 12, 13 were bad imo.. did not hold an interest. But that was one of the aspects of final fantasy games is that they were all different... new world, new story etc

The milking issue comes when cod releases annual games that ha e changed nothing (until recently)... same gameplay, same engine even.. thatis an issue...especially since they have cast aside lore.

Rpg's aren't really being milked because they inherently come with a whole new story.

That's... AMAZING!

I loved DQVIII waaaay back on my PS2 and I was really dissapointed that the sequel was developed exclusively for the 3DS at the time...

I'm happy that they're going multi-platform this time with it.

I've never played anything from this series before but that art style is fantastic. Might have to check it out for the purely superficial reason that it looks good if they release it outside of Japan.

@Born_Lucky:

I'm looking forward also to this, The Legend of Legacy (3DS). Made by Furyu, in conjunction with former staff members for Square Enix and Level-5. Also a Spiritual Sequel to the Saga series. Go check footage on YT.

The Legend of Legacy is the brainchild of several people who definitely know their ways around JRPG classics. The story is written by Masato Kato, the author of Chrono Trigger, and the visual design and game design come from Tomomi Kobayashi and Koyoji Koizumi, respectively—who previously did those same jobs for the SaGa series.

What is this, an episode of Family Guy? How can an article with a clear hook of jabbing the WiiU/teasing the NX be taken seriously as a pure discussion on the Dragon Quest series.. which is awesome enough it shouldn't be used to sell a silly Nintendo-themed "Paul is dead" conspiracy theory.

Why would Nintendo go against what it has said? Everyone (Sans Nintendo) has said the WiiU is dead, and yet, at the end of many consoles is when we truly see the titles that actually use the systems capabilities start to be made. If you listen to what Nintendo has said... No VR, No competing with WiiU or 3DS, and recent lamentations about how long it takes to port games to the virtual console... the answer is clear.

Nintendo is going to make a retro gaming console. In 2016... they will be able to make a system that runs their own GameCube games, Playstation One games, and Sega Saturn. Without anyone's blessing, and assuming they focus on disc games. They could also include other lesser known systems.. but those are the "Big" ones. With Sega's blessing, they could add the Dreamcast to that list. (Which is good timing, since the Microsoft OS on the Dreamcast system slowly wears the whole thing out... most of them are basically dead now.) They are unlikely to get Sony's blessing (Who just dropped backwards compatibility...) or the blessing of Microsoft (who abandoned their Xbox games the first chance they got and only made a few of them work on the 360 months later...) However, Nintendo is not in the business of getting the blessings of it's active rivals and detractors. The NX is an act of war, an Annex of abandoned retro gaming possibilities and platforms that small hobby developers could even publish games for if they so chose. Big developers might even see fit to republish those rare gems.. the games that even to this day sell for more than 60 bucks and are unlikely to get a revamp anytime soon. All they have to do is republish the disc.

Why leave the manufacture of retro game consoles to the little guys, when Nintendo can swoop in, dominate it, and release a console with a massive library of proven classics and favorites?

On the flip side, Sony could create their own Retro gaming answer, but they would be at least a year behind Nintendo in this now... and the N64 cartridge technology wouldn't be as smooth to integrate into a similarly aimed gesture. Microsoft seems content to stay out of handheld games, either through apathy, or a belief the windows phone will fill that need. It seems unlikely they would bother with a retro console, since they have less ground to lose and never cared about it before. How many of you would buy a retro game system? How many GAMES could you get on the cheap, how many rare treasures do you still have.. and occasionally play... but find yourself wishing you had new hardware? (Particularly hardware that doesn't eat your discs.... Playstation 2 "slim", Xbox 360.. I'm looking at you two.)

That's my theory though. It sounds more solid to me that Nintendo playing "monkey see, monkey do" with Sony and Microsoft or making a video game system you play in your sleep through rem sleep.

#@daff3ww: No more a joke than the "News" these organizations are pushing on us that is based on no fact whatsoever... merely idle comments and wild speculation. It would be rather flawed to release a new system out of cycle with other systems. They could never get new users based on having games published that exist already on other systems. The only way to get ahead is to offer Unique offerings. Retro games are unique as it gets, since they are essentially abandoned. Now I would have been joking if I was saying they'd make it compatible with the Turbo Grafix, the Phillip Magnavox CD-I, or the Atari Jaguar. I'm sure they have some hard core fans, somewhere, but that's hardly a large market.

Why don't you explain to me why you think that making a clone system to compete with Sony and Microsoft for the remaining half of the system "lifecycle", making a new VR console (Who, given, Nintendo owns the rights to the most important technologies involved in it.... ), or making a video game system with a dreamplay gimmick (Which sounds like the King of Gimmicks....) is less of a joke than a Retro game console that appropriates recently vacated properties of Sony along with Sega games and another shot at Gamecube games? Nintendo clearly isn't in the business of selling other people's games lately... they mostly sell their stuff. A retro game console would give all the biggest and oldest third party developers a HIGHLY lazy option to publish games that function on a Nintendo console. Isn't this what everyone is arguing for, arguing needs to be done? You can't set the bar lower than republishing finished work.

Make no mistake, this will offend everyone, except Nintendo / Neutral gamers and the third party devs. The "journalists" will be offended, because they can't exactly publish reviews on old games and get any sorts of freebies or special favors... they hate retreading old ground that the players know better than them. Sony will be offended because it's largely aimed at them... and the complicated history of the Playstation makes this very funny. Microsoft might take issue with Nintendo cleaning up their mistakes.... the Dreamcast is on it's deathbed as a retro-playable console thanks to their crummy OS. And Diehard fans of other systems will just grumble because.... they will likely blame Nintendo for killing their chances at revamps of their favorite PS1 games, they will likely rage until Sony (Or Microsoft) makes a retro game system... they will be MAD jealous. The only people who really don't care are PC gamers, who probably have roms of all those games anyway, right? Not everyone enjoys being a turbosperg and turning their computer into a console so they can play a glitched version of Street Fighter.

Retro gaming is no gimmick... there are people who publish games for the NES, even today. Star Versus, anyone?

It would be simply amazing to me if Dragon Quest 11 turned out to be a retro style game and they published it for the NX on a normal size disc with Gamecube coding. Maybe that's the real message here. I think we should take it all in perspective.. they are just talking because they know Nintendo has a good audience for JRPGs... they like them and are practically starved for JRPGs. They don't however, know anything more than the rest of us about the NX.. because Nintendo has a moratorium on talking about it. Now, if some disloyal Nintendo employee leaks something to us, I'm sure everyone will desperately read all about it... but for now... Look how fast Splatoon is selling. If a Zelda game comes out for the WiiU, if a Metroid Game comes out... if a Bounty Hunting F-Zero Universe game comes out... at what point would you fanatics admit the WiiU isn't dead? Or that you bought one a year ago and it's the console you actually play most, but you resent the fact that there aren't more of the best games on Earth? At what point... do you Rise with the Sun and surrender to the retro-bacterial programming that accompanied all the Amiibo's you bought and hoarded?

TLDR; You're all a bunch of pod people. You just don't know it yet.

@daff3ww: I'm no Nintendo Employee. I'm just saying what I think and what I hope. Obviously, I have as much proof as anyone of what Nintendo will do. I just get tired of fatalistic groupthink... it's bad for videogames, because it never offers real solutions.

To my knowledge 10 is a MMORPG. I doubt many people would want to play it and it would take a lot more work to bring to the US.

I've always like the Dragon Quest games. I got them all on Android even though I really don't like Anroid controls. I beat most of them on the NES. I believe I played up to number 4. I've also played Dragon Warrior 7 on the playstation. That is a fairly enjoyable game despite it's story. I played 8 a little bit on the WII, but never finished it. I played V almost all the way through on the DS (I wish they would release the SNES version US).

In fact I wish they would bring all of the DQ games to PC with controller support like they have with many of the final fantasy games.

I hope the game will be released outside of Japan because many times the Dragon Quest games are not.

I've never been very interested in the DQ heros or monsters games.

@Zombrex: That's good and all, but saying "released for PS4" doesn't mean a western/US release. @unfreak-believ is more than likely correct. Dragon Quest doesn't do well outside Japan, and an MMO across language barriers is a tough sell.

@CyberEarth: Plus, they would have to invest in US servers for the game, which is just as troublesome. That being said, I guess it is technically possible to buy and play it in the US. It's pretty easy to create a Japanese PS4 account and access the Japanese PSN, so with a VPN you could likely play the game. Might be more trouble than its worth, though, to play a game in a language you likely don't understand.

@daff3ww: try learning english... sure, it is made up of a huge mix of various languages, but the most difficult thing is the sentence structure compare to the langues of the rest of the world. It really is different. (It is hard to get that perspective if it is your native tongue, but you start to realize this after your 4th or 5th language...)

@daff3ww: there are some pronunciations which to those not familiar usually can discern, this is true of most languages. As for writing.. usually one learns a typed form first. With some of the asian languages, Japa ese among them, the meaning of a character can change based on the stroke itself. While both may a single line, one may mean peace and the other means dog food.... but overall, it really isn't dufficult has the sentax, honorifics, andother features of the la uage are similar to nearly all others, only the sounds and images differ.

This is great news, but now I don't know which game system to buy it for.

I'm leaning towards getting the 3DS version, since the dual 'modern' and 'retro' display sounds kind of cool.

But then, it would be nice to play a next-gen DQ game. But should I get it then on the PS4, or wait and see what the NX is about - I am a bigger fan of Nintendo than Sony, after all.

Lots to take in here.
