Dragon Quest IX Hands-On

Dragon Quest turns nine and is already shrinking. Do good things come in small packages?

Dragon Quest IX is the latest chapter in the epic role-playing series. Dragon Quest IX is developed by Level-5, the designer of the popular Dragon Quest VIII. While the publication of Dragon Quest IX was a Square-Enix exclusive in Japan, the Western version will be released as a partnership with Nintendo of America.

While several previous Dragon Quest games have been remade for the DS, Dragon Quest IX is the first to be made specifically for the handheld. The game makes perfect use of the DS's stylus to navigate menus, move characters, and interact with the world. You take control of a fallen angel who has recently become an ordinary human. But there is no set determined main character; instead, you build your own custom character by selecting gender, body type, hairstyle, eye shape, and skin tone.

Even better, several hours into the game, job classes are unlocked, including powerful warriors, crafty thieves, and destructive magic users. There are also additional unlockable classes, such as the paladin and superstar. It's not only the main character who can be changed; every party member can go through the same treatment of selecting class and appearance. There can be a total of three friends along with the main character, and another eight more can wait on the sidelines for rotation. Want to go in with a party of priests? One frontline fighter escorting a troupe of performers? Or a simple traditional role-playing cliche? All are fun possibilities. The party system can even be used to quickly power newly made characters brought into high-end areas.

You aren't limited to using your own made characters and party. Dragon Quest IX is the first game in the series to feature a multiplayer aspect. Players and friends can enter each other's worlds and either take part in adventures or explore the world on their own. Both players will be able to explore every location the host has visited, allowing low-level players to leap through end-game events. That doesn’t mean IX will be a cakewalk, however. Nintendo is promising that it will be the hardest Dragon Quest to date, spanning 60 hours of storyline and nearly another 80 hours of side quests. At the moment, the gameplay and difficulty seem very well balanced, though later dungeons may prove more of a challenge.

Graphically, Dragon Quest IX maintains the same bright, eye-popping imagery that both the previous DS remakes and the PlayStation 2 game have established. Akira Toriyama, also know for the Dragon Ball anime series and the SNES role-playing game Chrono Trigger, once again returns as Dragon Quest’s head character designer. The characters perfectly capture Toriyama’s signature style, and the lush environments further complement the game’s anime imagery.

Dragon Quest IX has already sold more than 100 million copies since its release in Japan last year and is expected to greatly increase those figures when it comes to US shores July 11 for the Nintendo DS.

"Dragon Quest IX has already sold more than 100 million copies since its release in Japan last year and is expected to greatly increase those figures when it comes to US shores July 11 for the Nintendo DS. " this figure is wrong. The entire series has sold about this much Dragon Quest IX has sold about 5 million! (if it had sold 100 million copies it would have been the best selling game ever! haha)

I hope that a lot of people actually get this game so we can get a large community of maps circulating like they have in Japan.

I prefer the dragon quest/warrior games where you tame monsters over the more traditional ones.. trying to get a really rare monster from Dragon Warrior 2 for example was half the fun of the game -.- Oh well, still seems to be a great dragon quest game reguardless

@ Gelugon_baat I'm not sure if you know this, but Akira Toriyama has done the character designs for almost all of the Dragon Quest games. So no pressure needed, I'm sure he was more than happy to continue working on what has become his own signature character designs in the DQ series.

100 Million Copies? Holy jujitsu Batman! That HAS to be the best selling game EVER of ALL TIME FOREVER. Someone's finger seemed to get stuck on the 0 for a bit too long.

i'll agree with snxx about the 100 million copies lol.. i think he used the ''100'' figure to emphasize how much it sold (meaning it is a best seller :D) I can't wait until it is released!!!

I'm always excited for a new Dragon Quest. I admit that the DS wouldn't be my first choice of platform. I was really hoping for one of the consoles so it would feel more like Dragon Quest VIII, which is my all-time favorite JRPG, but these days with traditional RPG games (as opposed to the MMO variety) almost as rare as unicorns, I'll take what I can get.

@wahyudil , @nchan , @BornGamer , @link_15 , @ithilgore2006 : I really think the "100 million copies sold" number is off. I mean, c'mon, Japan's entire population estimation for 2010 is 127 million people. So, this is what Wikipedia told me: "According to Gamespot, 4,100,968 copies of the game were sold in Japan as of Jan 5 2010. Famitsu later updated the number, stating that the game have sold 4,150,667 copies of the game as of 28th March 2010. Square-Enix aims to have 5 million copies of the game shipped, though the company didn't specify if the target was for Japan only or worldwide." It also says that "As of February 2010, the Dragon Quest series has sold over 53 million units worldwide" - and that's for the *entire* series. I know Wikipedia isn't 100% trustworthy, but it's *very* unlikely it's THAT wrong, that means this article's author, Mr. Kurtis Seid, wasn't really thinking straight when he came up with this "100 millions copies sold" number.

I think 100 million must be for the entire series. DQIX was just over 4 million I believe.

@Ovirew lol, one of my favorite games ever is Elite Beat Agents on the DS, no violence. I own a DS I'm just tired of Dragon Quest on the DS, I finished IV and V but now I want it back on the big screen. It would just be cool to see DQ evolve into next-gen instead of just staying the same on a handheld.

"Akira Toriyama... ...once again returns as Dragon Quest’s head character designer." Sweet! Though I wonder how much cajoling that Square Enix had to do to get him to work on DQ IX in the first place. Knowing << LINK REMOVED >>, he's quite the drifter and never stays put in any particular IP, after having concluded the original Dragon Ball manga series.

@eggs-benedict maybe you don't like handheld games, but that doesn't mean the DS is lame. It has some of the best games I've ever played on it. Some people are just too...I don't know what they are, but they feel like they are less masculine because they are playing games on a little device and not a big screen. I bet you wouldn't touch Animal Crossing with a stick either, the game doesn't have enough violence for someone like you.

Yea, I'm just not into the whole handheld gaming thing, if it was on the Wii that'd be fair. I just think it should be on an actual console not a lame DS.

@Eggs-Benedict : not to ruin your moment, but you do realize that, for the lion's share of DQ's existence, the series was primarily a Nintendo property right? Up until DQ 7, the series was only seen on Nintendo systems.

Dragon Quest 9 is ds only, you will never see it on multiplatform unless sqaure wants it that way and they usually release hand held games on one hand held system and that's it, I can't remember any DQ games being multiplatform, sorry Isaiah26.

Though it definitely won't be as successful as it was in Japan, Nintendo is making quite a significant effort to push Dragon Quest IX in America. Here's hoping it will sell well and help promote the franchise in the states, which can even lead to the spin-offs that would normally be Japan-only coming here as well.
