DS Lite sells 136k in two days

Nintendo says more than 136,000 units of its redesigned handheld were sold in first two days on market, on pace to match original DS figures.

One of the hottest gadgets currently on the market is Nintendo's DS Lite, a redesigned version of the dual-screened handheld originally released in 2004. The portable has been scarce in Japan, where new shipments have been regularly selling out as gamers snatch them up.

America was introduced to the handheld this past Sunday, and it appears that DS Lite fever isn't confined just to Japan. Nintendo claims more than 136,500 DS Lites were sold in the unit's first two days on sale in the United States.

A spokesman for the company told Reuters that the DS Lite is on pace to match the sales figures of the original DS, which sold half a million units in its first 10 days in retail. Nintendo also says that the new version of the DS Lite is also outpacing the initial sales numbers of another redesigned handheld--the Game Boy Advance SP.

Nintendo sold more than 1 million DSs in its first month in both America and Japan, and by late April 2005, it sold more than 5 million units worldwide. As of late March, the combined total of DSs sold was more than 16 million worldwide. The DS Lite will be released in Europe on June 23.

The DS Lite is also helping spur sales of DS software. Since the DS Lite's launch, Nintendo says that relative to the previous week, sales of New Super Mario Bros. doubled and sales of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day tripled.

Nintendo DID do something big with the DS Lite: they got me, a person who really never had much interest in the handheld game market, to purchase one the week it came out! Not only that, but 2 other of my friends are each committed to purchasing one after playing with mine! Nintendo gives me some new and innovative gameplay, and I'm happy to support Nintendo with my $!

Honestly, I love PSP itself as a machine but there's no good game for it right now. With all the crazy titles for DS, it was enough to convince me to get DS Lite on the day of release. If Sony wants to compete with Nintendo, they have to do better than just simply porting hit games like gta... I am sick and tired of crappy ports... Just design a killer game for PSP and PSP shall live.

grnidbandit, i think you misunderstood my post. I was posting it to point out how that site and the original poster, Des_Eagle, claimed that the PSP outsold the DS. Let me set this straight. They CLAIMED the PSP outsold the DS. In actual fact, their numbers didn't add up, and the DS is outselling instead by a million units worldwide. The site's worldwide numbers included an approximately 3 million PSP units that supposedly were not sold in america, asia, or europe (or basically the entire world). The one point i'm trying to get across is that the claim is FALSE. DS outsells PSP by a large margin by the site's own broken down numbers. PLEASE people actually read the posts before you respond to them.

grnidbandit, I can respond to you. I don't believe your probably false statements of " thinking of getting a DS lite, but i need more titles than metroid and castlevania, and no one responded back with games that are either coming out or are out that are worth a shot to try out". For one those aren't the only two games that are good on the system, they aren't even the best. Here is a list of games you seem to be overlooking, Mario Kart, Advanced Wars, Meteos, New Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, M&L partner in time, Tetris DS, and many others. Games that are coming out, well let's take a look at The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, FFIII, Contact, Yoshi's Island 2, Children of Mana, Deep Labyrinth, Pokemon Pearl&Diamond and the list goes on. Stop being a sony fanboy, oh and to stick a dagger in your theory that "what game have you seen out there with horrible graphics and fun game play??" First lets start with Civ2, then we can go to Panzer General or we could look at Hearts of Iron(1&2) maybe take a peak at GTAseries or walk on down to Advanced Wars(even though the graphics have a nice style, many would argue that they aren't the best) or could we look at almost half the strategy genre and say they are bad games because they don't have good graphics. That single comment should almost void the rest of your opinions. Don't make a statement without thinking it through first.

To konel01, all I have to say is, 'brilliant". I still realize that with my five roation( Metroid, Age of Empires, Advanced Wars DS, Meteos, New! Super Mario Bros.) of games, I still want at least 7 or 8 more DS titles. Plus the new games like Contact and FFIII, the DS is going to make me go broke. I still haven't bought the DSLite because I don't really know if its worth it and I don't want to sell my original DS because i don't know I just want to keep it. Down the line i'll probably get a DSlite.

grnidbandit, not to be mean, but you are a sonyfanboy. don't get me wrong i'm one of those people that buy every system when they hit. mostly becuz i feel every system has something to offer. I like my PSP, but i'll admit I love my DS. I imported my Navy Blue DSlite as soon as it hit asia. I take it everywhere with me and I just replace the hand me down DS I gave my girlfriend (when i imported the lite) with a brand new White DSlite this week. if she, a person that never played games b4 she met me, likes the DS, that should speak volumes. DS hands down has better SOFTWARE than the PSP. This about the games. PSP does have a few jems, but if you would look past the kiddie look of Nintendo games, you will realize how fun they are. Hell go to the PSP page here on gamespot and see the "One Year of the PSP". Its sad but true. I Buy systems to play games. I'm not a fanboy, i like a game bcuz it's fun. Not becuz who made it or what it looks like. I haven't picked up my PSP since I beat MGAcid 2 a second time. I play my DS daily and even at work during my breaks. I'm currently switching between 6 different DS games (Mario Kart, Metriod, Animal Crossing, M&L partner in time, Brain Age and Tetris DS). Currently there is only one PSP game I'm looking forward to, Metal Gear PO. There is still a few game currently out for the DS i really want to pick up. As for the games that I want in the future, well.... you don't want to get me started. Stop being a loyal fanboy. Open you mind and try something different. you never know, you might like it.

dano_man Des_Eagle wrote: "Wondering how the PSP is doing in sales lately? www.videogamecharts.com See that? Yeah, shut up Ninboys, and go crying to Shiggy, because you've been mislead this entire time... What's that, you say? It's a lie? I know it hurts...but numbers don't lie. Say what you want about game libraries... Cuz it looks like your game library isn't doing enough. (BTW, that site lists SALES, not shipments.)" ___________________________________________________________ I went to that site and it seems they made some calculation errors. This is what I calculated from their own monthly data (Monthly data only up to end of 2005): Total "Sales" by end of 2005 calculated using monthly data: . . . . . . . . . . . . . .PSP. . . . . . . . . . . . . DS UK . . . . . . . .5,020,000. . . . . . . .4,100,000 US. . . . . . . . 3,633,964. . . . . . . .3,817,883 ***. . . . . . . .4,200,000. . . . . . . .5,700,000 TOTAL. . . . 12,853,964. . . . . . .13,617,883 Videogamecharts.com's summary totals in "World Wide...Sales" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PSP. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .DS 2005 YTD. .15,030,000. . . . . . .14,430,000 There is more than 3 million PSPs unaccounted for, and roughly 800,000 DS's unaccounted for. I can attribute the discrepancy to non-european/american/japanese markets, but I simply cannot get myself to accept that the PSP would get an additional 3 million sales while the DS only gained 800,000. Note that this data is only up to the end of 2005, so the fact that the DS outsold the PSP in 2006 (due to the DS Lite) would only enlarge the difference. So Des_Eagle, please don't start ranting when you can't get the facts straight. Do some math and see if those numbers make sense for yourself, but for the record, the PSP is almost 2 million units off of the DS as of today. Great post! I have been a PSP owner since day one and im tired of people hearing how bad the library on the psp sucks, and its not true, people say it only sells because of the brand name, and I dont think thats entirely true either, yeah sony did not have all the killer apps on day one or even months after that but look whats coming out and look whats already about, SOCOM,syphon filter, daxter, gradius, burnout, metal gear acid, crisis core, and more games coming out like ace combat, metal gear portable ops, tekken, killzone, SOCOM 2 and even games we have not even heard of yet, sony is on the right track, and ONLY my opinion, and maybe others too, PSP has a better design than the DS, just looks more beautiful to me, earlier I posted a message on here, I have been thinking of getting a DS lite, but i need more titles than metroid and castlevania, and no one responded back with games that are either coming out or are out that are worth a shot to try out, all in the end i think the psp just has better visuals and games that are aimed at the older audience which is great with me, someone here said the average gamer does not care what the graphics look like and neither do real games, well my question is this, why do we have system like the xbox360 and the ps3 coming out??? from the looks of things those same game play types could be made on current-gen sys and there would be no need for next meaning, meaning sony and MS can make more money off their current systems since supplies and parts becoming cheaper over time, yeah games do have to be fun I agree, but they also got to have that visual effect to, its a perfect marriage, what game have you seen out there with horrible graphics and fun game play?? makes no sense, i bring my psp to work and play on my lunch hour, all my co-workers have said two things to me, #1 wow looks like a real expensive machine did you pay $500 for that? #2 wow those graphics look real nice how can a small machine produce those kinds of visuals? and these are people who dont play games at all, i see where the wii is going and i like it, im getting a wii on launch just because i know someone who tried the wiimote and said its alot of fun and looks like it too, so the conculsion is i dont like the fact nintendo makes the average consumer look stupid by saying this is less intimidating, how because the ds does not have the same graphical power as the psp, and uses a stylus? give me a break how hard is it to work something with 4 buttons and a d-pad/analog stick? also the only thing the wii has going on for it is the wiimote and games, they can make the graphics not look as good as their rivals, but without that wiimote i would not be looking towards nintendos direction.

Let's hope they don't squander their success and re-invest their money into a successful launch of the Wii online gaming service, just like Apple used the profits of the iPod to stay afloat. The Wii needs a hard drive to hold all of the classic games I'm gonna download!

I cant wait till the microsoft portable hits the table, then we will have all three major companies competing with each other in both console and handheld. Oh and Sony please next time make controls that are practicle and make sure actual good games come out, I dont even know where my psp is, probably in my closet somewhere........

not surprised. When the psp came out many sony fan boys were screaming their lungs out, touting the psp as the champion from the beginning. Funny. I'm an early adopter for both systems and I have to say , in all honesty my psp has been inside a drawer since i tired of lumines. My ds on the other hand is always getting used. My wife is not a gamer but she started playing with wario ware, and now we play mario kart and a bunch of other titles together(heck she even plays some by herself , like Kirby's cursed canvas), she now owns her own ds (i got ther the mario kart bundle) and she loves it. She knows about the wii and is excited to try it out when it debuts because she expects it to be just a s fun. What's my point? Well its simple, real gamers know that we don't really play a game to be amazed at how it looks. We play it to be entertained, to have fun with it, so we won't care that the wii is inferior in terms of raw power, we know it will be fun. So we will buy it. Non gamers will feel less intimidated by the game because the control scheme will fell more intuitive, and they don't care about graphics to begin with. So they will buy it. Nintendo is in a real good position this time around and even if they don't come out on top this upcoming generation , they will still be more profitable then Sony , and Microsoft's game divisions. Personally I hope all 3 companies are around for a long time because they all bring something to the table, and we a gamers and conusmers win when we have choices.

Bloodoflamb I realize that many good games don't sell well, but you completely missed my point. I stated that PSP sold due to name recognition, and I can point to the fact that EXTREMELY few PSP games made it into the top 10 charts for sales. I then stated that the DS sold because of software, and then pointed to the fact that DS titles FREQUENTLY made it into the top 10 charts for sales. (select an action below) ______________ Report Abuse To Moderator Posted Jun 15, 2006 4:43 pm PT I understood your point. I've been reading your post. I just gave you my opinion. It doesn't matter how well something sells, if it is a good game I will buy it. Plain and simple. I caught your point, I just didn't address it directly, either that or you didn't catch why I said what I said.

Global_Nexus Impressive sales from the DS. VERY impressive. I wonder how much momentum those sales will have? I'm hoping they'll stay pretty strong, as the DS Lite does seem quite the ergonomic improvement over the original DS. I'll get one sometime [I'm a bit of a collector, you see] in the future, but I'm happy with the original DS for now. On a related note, I as a Nintendo fan since the NES days am quite happy to see the PSP managing to give the DS a run for its money thus far here in North America. Competition is very good for a market. Sony's made quite a few bad decisions with the PSP [I'm looking at UMD primarily], but it's quite the good machine. Let the competition roll, because -- regardless of the idiotic fanboys on all sides the conflicts will breed -- the market will be healthier for it, and all gamers regardless of affiliation benefit from that. cyber_sonix psp would be good, except it has no games. People find that out rather quickly. I already have an ipod, so music/video support means nothing to me =P so it came down to games. DS has games. psp doesnt. I bought my lite sunday morning and am happy to say I have one, and I am happy to be part of that 136k. =) (select an action below) ______________ Report Abuse To Moderator Posted Jun 15, 2006 12:07 am PT << LINK REMOVED >>
