DS sales top 144 million, Wii nears 85 million

Nintendo's nine-month profits fall 74 percent as its two platforms knock down sales milestones; revenues also down.

Today Nintendo reported its earnings for the nine months ending December 31, 2010. And once again for the formerly cash-flush game giant, the news was not good. The Kyoto-based company reported nine-month net revenue of ¥807.99 billion ($9.76 billion), down 31.7 percent from ¥1.182 trillion ($14.28 billion) during the same period the year prior. Net income--aka profit--plummeted 74.3 percent from ¥192.60 billion ($2.33 billion) to ¥49.56 billion ($598.8 million).

The strong yen cost Nintendo many gold coins.
The strong yen cost Nintendo many gold coins.

One reason for the falling sales numbers was ¥84.40 billion ($1.02 billion) of foreign currency exchange losses due to the strong yen. Another reason was slowing sales of Nintendo's various platforms. The company lowered its full-year sales forecasts for its systems, dropping DS hardware from 23.5 million to 22.5 million units and Wii hardware from 17.5 million to 16 million units. Curiously, though, the company's Wii software forecast increased from 138 million to 170 million units and its DS software estimates went from 125 million to 135 million units for the 12 months ending March 31, 2011.

Despite the lowered forecast, Nintendo's platforms remain far ahead of the competition in terms of sales. As of December 31, the DS had sold 144.59 million hardware systems and 817.49 million software units. Lifetime shipments of the Wii totaled 84.64 million units, with a software total of 695.37 million units sold. During the October-December period--which Nintendo did not offer separate financial information for--combined global shipments of the DS suite of systems and Wii hardware totaled more than 17.75 million units, along with nearly 130 million games for the two platforms.

I suppose it has been Nintendo strategy for some time that now when they have now targeted "casual gamers" with Wii, the next console is going to combine it and what the hardcore gamers want. Can't wait :)

@warhawk-geeby: Yeah I doubt Sega have the money too. But Sega's CEO has said ''never say never'' to them making a new console. So you never know. And yeah the Mega Drive is such a class console, easily one of the best ever.

@widdowson91 Totally spelt your name wrong on the last comment.. My bad. Completely agree about this console war.. Both consoles are basically identical, there's nothing to set them apart. I doubt SEGA have got the money though to go back into the console market.. Shame really. My old Mega-Drive is still my favourite console, not a bad game on it.

@warhawk-geeby: Yeah Nintendo certainly have a loyal fanbase. I'll admit that at times during last gen I was worried that we'd lose both Sega and Nintendo because a lack of sales comapred to the other two, but also in the back of my mind I knew Nintendo could pull something out of the bag...and they did just that with the Wii. But god, I'd LOVE Sega to start developing a new console. Nintendo are my favourite developers, but a console war without both Nintendo and Sega is sad in my eyes. The battle between the XBox 360 and PS3 this gen has been so boring.

@Spahettificator: Fair enough mate, you're entitled to your own opinions as is everyone. The reason I think the PlayStation 2 was the worst console of last generation was because it satisfied my gaming needs the least of the 4 consoles. I'm not really a fan of games such as God of War and other stuff like that, and those types of games were the 'best' on the console. Hell I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy but I hated all the Final Fantasy games for the PS2. On the other hand I liked more games for the Dreamcast, GameCube and XBox. I'll admit that I didn't find the XBox that much better then the PS2, but I did like more games for it. I did like some games for the PS2, such as the Jak & Daxter games and the awesome Dragon Quest VIII, but I didn't find any PS2 game as good as the likes of Soul Calibur, Metroid Prime or Halo: Combat Evolved. I'm not one for the whole idea of making consoles 'multimedia centres'. I never play DVD's or music on my consoles, so having those features included in the PlayStation 2 and XBox was needless for me; but I can see why some people liked them. On the graphics front the Dreamcast was the worst last gen, then it was the PlayStation 2. The GameCube had the best by far (just look at the GameCube version of Resident Evil 4 for instance), but in my eyes I don't really care for graphics. I can appreciate good visuals, but game play, story and music is more important to a gaming experience.

@widdowson91 Don't really see how the PS2 was the worst. I guess the Dreamcast could have better graphics (wouldn't as I never played one) and the Xbox definitely could have better graphics, but the PS2s DVD capabilities right out the box (as opposed to having to buy addons like for the Xbox and Dreamcast or no capability as with the Gamecube) and it's massive game catalogue more than made up for slight graphical or CPU weaknesses. Just my opinion :)

@widdowon91 Thank you. May i also add that I agree with the dreamcast comment, my best mate had one at the time (god knows how many years ago that was). We stayed up all hours on re-volt and shemnue, brilliant stuff. I'm glad that Nintendo did so well this gen, we can't afford to lose them. It seemed just as they were on the brink of disappearing they made a huge comeback. Well deserved. Must be the loyal fanbase :)

Whats all this "the DS is about to pass the PS2" DS surpassed the PS2 a few months ago....... PS2 Total Sales: 141.97 Million NDS Total Sales 144.81 Million and counting..... don't take my word for it.... see for yourself << LINK REMOVED >> Anyway that aside.... The NDS has been a truly amazing system.... Those who wrote Nintendo off after the GC.... Take a look at yourself now!

@BAD-C0MPANY: The PS2 is the highest selling console of all time, and I take my hat off to Sony for that, but it was the worst console of its gen. The worst one sold the most, the best one (Dreamcast) sold the least. ''If you want to talk about families, then the PlayStation brand still remains the king. Anyone who sayst he opposite is spreading bias and/or a Nintendo fanboy. ''' Truth be told mate you can't go on about 'fanboys' becuase you sound like a certain fanboy yourself. I'm not saying you ARE an fanboy, I'm saying you sound like one. The DS is the ultimate faimily console. Why? My Nanna has one. Does she have a PS2? Erm... no.

Bad-Company There's a Ps2 slim if I remember so your arguement fails. If you are talking about families supporting the PS brand that's not true anymore because these same families mostly now support Nintendo.

Doesn't matter if the "DS" passes the PS2. The PS2 is one system, not a whole family. So if the whole DS family passes PS2 it doesn't matter. Each DS version still has less compared to PS2 since we're talking about a single system here versus another. So in the end, PS2 is still the king of sales. If you want to talk about families, then the PlayStation brand still remains the king. Anyone who sayst he opposite is spreading bias and/or a Nintendo fanboy.

jerri ,, wii has its strong time at the holidays , so games isnt the issue, its the people who are strapped for money except for the holidays is when they like spend ing its the economy . this has part to do with why sales of ps3 and wii are slowing up , 360 is just going to get steam until e1 stops buying kenicts , that will happen just like it happened to wii wii is still gonna be the winner in all this , 3ds is also to blame for the slow sales but who cares we need somthing new wii is going on 6 , its done its time anything over 6 has done its time! why you think ms is now focusing on kenict --ill tell you, they reached the most in graphics making a new console wouldnt make it much better then it is , ps3 has maxed it out so far , and unless you want an expensive console day one , wii 360 ps3 will have to do but i know one will be at e3 this yr cause 3ds and psp2 launching this year shows a pattern -handhelds come before consoles to start the generation so thats probably half te reason to

The news sounds bad only to stockholders, economic analysts, and company CEOs. To the rest of us, it sounds exactly like common sense--with so many units sold across the planet, it seems that the Wii/DS's market has reached saturation and most everyone that wanted one, has one by now. The sales will only continue to fall as a result. To the stockholders/CEOS, it will be seen as a time to either start R&D'ing the next console or start focusing on software development to try and boost sales (which is what the Wii really needs).

monson21502 kinect is taking over. in 4-5 years it will sell as many as these two maybe more... ************************************************************ Well, we can dream, but no, that's not going to happen. Not in this lifetime anyways. Kinect will do fine as long as their is ample amounts of quality software. Microsoft needs to "wow" us. I've gotten lazy and haven't played my Kinect in about 2 weeks now.

this was to be expected. It's about that time that sales should start slowing, seeing how explosive they were before. my only concern is that this will no doubt fuel "Wii is dying" chants, as people overlook common sense. ALOT of people have them, so of course alot of demand has been satisfied, leaving a much smaller amount of people to buy them. just plain old common sense.

Nintendo was far ahead of Sony and Microsoft, who caught up years later with their own version of 'motion sensitive'. Now with the 3DS, Nintendo has yet again made a groundbreaking device, a one of a kind actually. Now Sony is releasing it's PSP2 or NGC by Christmas 2011, and it has touch screen and a gyroscope just like the 3DS. Copycats copy success.

The DS passed the PS2. Even if it's not official, it pretty obvious it'll way passed it by the end of the year. We all knew Nintendo's sales were going to drop eventually. Even though their % was way down, they still outsold their competition, which shows how far ahead they are.

As popular as the Wii is, the DS has sold 60 million more units! It did come out 2 years earlier than the Wii (original DS in '04), but that's still impressive.

I wish more gamers appreciated what Nintendo does for the gaming industry. I feel like the gaming community for whatever reason does everything in their power to bash Nintendo in every respect. I mean look at the recent announcement of the NGP. People who were all over the 3DS are already saying how the NGP is going to spank the 3DS. It's dissapointing.

@DCUltrapro, Sometimes I just like to play in consoles, sometimes in handheld, the screens in DS previous versions are really small, its a pity that 3ds will be the same size as DSI and not XL. Well, just wait for the psp2 with 1080, bigger screen, and wit, only a bad thing, there´s not touch screen as was first planned I thought, its good to play strategy games and others styles.

Great Job Nintendo. It would seem as if the DS is poised to surpase the PS2. That would be a true milestone. It would seem like this years E3 would be a great time for Nintendo to announce the successor of the Wii and release and showcase a great fall and holiday season line-up of games for the 3DS.

@DCUltrapro, Ds has exclusives adventures, tons of them. Without counting the many ways to play, in horizontal or vertical. The sale list is about only DS and its versions, if you note DS XL sells 25.000 per week and the smaller screen psp Go only 790 units.
