DSiWare turns 1
Nintendo Store Update: Handheld's online channel celebrates first birthday with Mr. Driller, Game & Watch; Fishie Fishie, Ironclad hit Wii.
One year ago this week, Nintendo launched the DSi in North America. Along with the camera-equipped redesign for Nintendo's popular portable, the publisher rolled out the DSiWare service, which lets owners of the handheld take advantage of the system's newly introduced SD card storage by downloading games and other content. Nintendo has since released more than 150 programs through DSiWare, adding four more as part of its Monday update this week.
Namco Bandai's Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop leads this week's quartet of new additions to DSiWare. The 500 DSi-point ($5) title includes more than 40 stages in which players descend down a vertical shaft by drilling through colored blocks to achieve a high score.
The remainder of this week's DSiWare lineup falls under Nintendo's Game & Watch label and costs 200 DSi points ($2) a piece. Manhole is a fast-paced puzzler in which gamers take the role of a construction worker and attempt to prevent pedestrians from falling through openings. In Helmet, gamers attempt to move from one building to another while avoiding debris falling from the sky. Lastly, Vermin plays out like the classic Whack-a-Mole arcade game.
As for WiiWare, DK Games brings Fishie Fishie to Nintendo's console this week for 500 Wii points ($5). Accommodating play for up to four, Fishie Fishie is a reflex-based competitive game that presents more than 100 levels in which gamers engage in such modes as Soccer, Capture the Star, and Survival. Lexis Numerique has released its child-development tool Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 2 for 500 Wii points ($5).
On the Virtual Console, D4 Enterprise has on tap Ironclad for 1,000 Wii points ($10). The side-scrolling shoot-'em-up was originally developed by Saurus for the NeoGeo and saw its first run in 1996.
