Dust 514 Is Easily One of the Most Interesting Shooters at E3

E3 2012: While easy to pick up and play, this F2P shooter's omnipresent links to EVE Online make for a fascinating experience.

'

It's a bit odd to think that an accessible first-person shooter could be one of the most interesting games at E3 2012, but that's Dust 514 for you. After all, it's hardly trying to reinvent the wheel. Dust 514's controls work like most first-person shooters on the market, with melee and sprint buttons mapped to either analog stick like in Call of Duty, and vehicle controls very much in the style of Halo. But it's when you dig deeper into the universe this game takes place in that you realize this is one of the craziest first-person shooters on the PS3.

No Caption Provided

Dust 514 is a sister game to the legendarily hardcore massively multiplayer online game EVE Online, a game of interstellar politics and corporate warfare. EVE has earned a reputation as a game that's incredibly deep and engrossing, but with a learning curve the size of Mt. Everest. Dust 514, on the other hand, is one of the first free-to-play shooters on the PlayStation 3 and provides almost no barrier for entry when you first grab a dual shock and drop into a match.

So there's a surface level of ease and accessibility that Dust 514 offers, and its lack of a price tag certainly makes it that much more simple for PlayStation 3 owners to get into. But it's kind of a rabbit-hole type of game when you start getting into the in-game economy and the politics of planetary control.

The battles take place on planets that exist in the EVE universe, which are constantly being fought over by warring corporations. When you call in an air strike in Dust, a player in EVE piloting a ship has to decide whether it's worth his while to accept that request depending on how heated that warzone is. It's all connected.

On top of that, the currency you earn in the game, ISK, is the same as that of EVE Online. You can either carry that currency over into EVE or use it to dig into the game's extensive customization system that lets you equip your characters with a litany of class-flexible equipment and granular skill upgrades. So if you want to really take your character to its competitive limits, you'll need to become intimately familiar with the very same economy that drives so much of the corporate intrigue of EVE.

No Caption Provided

When you think about the whole thing, Dust 514 is a pretty brilliant move by developer CCP Games. EVE is a popular and longstanding MMO game with players who are firmly entrenched in the goings-on of the gameworld, but it's not exactly an easy game for newcomers to get into. Dust 514, on the other hand, is a free-to-play console shooter that doesn't deviate much from the popular games on the market in terms of its core gameplay, but layers in EVE's universe and economy on top of that to let you explore at their own pace. It's not much of a stretch to see Dust 514 becoming a sort of gateway drug for EVE Online.

And that's what makes Dust 514 so compelling. Sure, it's a sci-fi first-person shooter that doesn't exactly feel worlds apart from something like Halo. But it's a game that exists in a lived-in universe, where the stakes are high and the players care deeply about their place in the universe. Peel away the accessible wrapping, and Dust 514 is a very interesting proposition for fans of first-person shooters.

Dear oh dear, what a great big steaming pile of dung this thing is. Just downloaded the beta off PSN+, and after spending 19 minutes downloading, installing, going through menu's and verifying my email account, I get stuck in a nasty little box room my character walks around in at a snails pace, and whenever I try to join a game it either says 'server full' or 'connection lost'. Broken useless guff. Wouldn't try playing this again in a million years.

Because EVE is on the PC. I imagine this is one of those things that people who love EVE will want to play, but they can't play both if they are playing EVE already now can they? Plus its cool to link PC's with consoles...Look at how awesome FF XI was!

This is quite probably the biggest innovation to come to multiplayer in a long while! To the people disappointed about the game not coming to the PC, it wouldn't be very fair to the PS3 folk playing with their controllers to go up against the keyboard and mouse brigade would it?

@Quivox Yes, but surely you realize that the majority of the game's playerbase will use the traditional DualShock 3 for it?

That idea of connecting games like this is very innovative in my opinion. Too bad that it doesn't come to the PC. I don't know why. But they have already given it for free in the console, right?Otherwise this could be the game to be remembered and gives birth to a whole new genre.

@solid_snake1461 While it isn't coming to the PC, it has native support for a mouse and keyboard setup on the PS3. I will definitely be "borrowing" my brother's PS3 when this comes out :D

@Normaral85 Its f2p doesnt mean you dont buy it. Should be more appropriately labeled buy to play. They just emphasized that its f2p as in thw same monthly fee that applies to EVE doesnt apply here. Just my guess.

@mack10 @Normaral85 It is free as in you never have to pay a single cent to CCP in order to download, play, or kick ass in the game. Microtransactions will be there, but CCP promises to make it "not pay to win."

P.S. For any PC fans that might be reading this: Dust 514 will have native support for a mouse and keyboard setup, regardless of the fact that it's a PS3 exclusive.

@Szeiden What are you saying exactly? So what if you can transfer your hard-earned ISK from Dust to EVE? The implants/mods/equipment you've bought for your character in Dust doesn't fit a ship in EVE.If you meant that it's weird to buy ISK using microtransactions and transfer to EVE then who cares? You can already buy 30 days of gametime for EVE (real money) then sell it for ISK in-game.

If you're talking about something else, then I think you'll have to be a little bit clearer.

@Szeiden Dust players buy "Aurum" with real money not ISK (ISK has to be earned in game). Aurum can only be used in EVE to accessorize one's character, but it seems possible to sell the accessories for ISK. In any case, I don't see why it would be allowed for Dust players to send EVE players money. When was the last time you heard of a mercenary paying his employer?

@jariullah See this is where I'm lost. The game is F2P so under normal circumstances this would mean microtransactions. However, that's impossible because you can transfer ISK from Dust to EVE. They can't make it so you can buy power with microtransactions in an F2P and then transfer it to a P2P mmo.

My question is will CCP have updates and patches for DUST of the quality the EVE gets?

There is so much more in EVE then when it first was released.

It's a great concept but I'm usually very wary of games that rely so heavily on being online. At the end of the day it's free so I'd be an idiot to not give it a shot.
