Dwayne Johnson Says He "Laughed Hard" When He Read Vin Diesel's Feud Comments

Johnson responds to Diesel's statement about using "tough love" while making the Fast and the Furious movies.

Dwayne Johnson has responded to recent comments from his Fast & the Furious co-star Vin Diesel about their notorious feud. The two stars publicly fell out during the production of The Fate of the Furious in 2016.

Last month, Diesel suggested that he used "tough love" to help Johnson play the character Hobbs, and that's what's led to the breakdown in their relationship. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new movie Jungle Cruise, Johnson was asked what he thought about Diesel's comments.

Now Playing: The Fate of the Furious - Trailer 2

"I laughed and I laughed hard," he said. "I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I'll leave it at that. And that I've wished them well. I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me."

Emily Blunt, who was also being interviewed about Jungle Cruise, weighed in on the issue too and delivered an amusingly sarcastic response to Diesel's comments. "Just thank God he was there," she said. "Thank God. He carried you through that."

Diesel had stated that Hobbs was a "tough character to embody," and that it "took a lot of work" to get Johnson to play him as Diesel wanted. "As a producer to say, Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who's associated with wrestling, and we're going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know," he said. "That's something that I'm proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love."

The feud became public when Johnson posted to Instagram about the professionalism of the Fate of the Furious crew and his female co-stars while stating some of the men were "candy asses" who didn't act like "true professionals." It was subsequently reported that his issues were with Diesel, with Johnson later confirming that they shot very few scenes together. Nevertheless, a post that Johnson made in 2019 seemed to suggest that the pair had mended their relationship, after the success of the Fast & the Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw.

Jungle Cruise hits theaters and Disney+ Premium Access on July 28. Johnson also recently finished shooting the DC movie Black Adam, which will be released in July 2022.

I’m sure everyone laughed at Vin. When it comes to professionalism, I don’t know that many people would take his side over arguably the hardest working person in the business.

Dwayne is right to move on from the franchise. He doesn’t need it. Vin, however, doesn’t have a career outside of those movies. Every time he tries, it’s a flop.

Dwayne is a way better actor anyways, so it’s hilarious that Vin would suggest he wanted to get a better performance out of him.

I'm tired of Diesel's constant haranguing....this shit should have disappeared years ago. That said, for those so quick to berate his acting chops, he was great in Saving Private Ryan.

Reminds me of hearing about Tura Satana on the set of “Faster Pussycat Kill Kill” in the 60s. She would constantly bully and berate co-star Susan Bernard and Bernard would Go on record as saying she was scared of her because she was such a bully and Tura tried to play damage control saying she only did it to make her the best she could be in the role. It was a damn exploitation grindhouse flick. All they needed to do was wear skimpy, low-cut blouses and short skirts. It was never meant to be Kubrick. Just like the F&F series is not meant to be highbrow cinema. Some people are just dicks and they know it, but know they need to not show that side in public. Goes to show that Tura and Vin are just A-type sociopaths.

I've never liked VD--I've always thought of him as some wacky looking dude that tries WAY too hard to be a badass. Big, flappy ears, stupid accent, giant shnozz and we're supposed to take him seriously because...he drives cars. Side by side, DJ is both the superior actor and just a natural talent, both physically and emotionally. "Tough love" sounds like "We didn't want to work hard and these movies are a fucking joke so I had to tell Dwayne we're all just here to drink and smoke weed all day. He didn't like that and wanted to be like an actor or something so we had to treat him like shit."

Dwayne Johnson's work ethic is widely known. People that give 110% do not have time for others that can bring it to the same level. Even less for those that don't even care to try.

I'm with DJ on this one. That tough love bit just sounds like plain lazy excuses. But hey, Mark did well for himself too. I can't knock him for letting it get to his head. I'd be living that movie star lifestyle too!

I've had more respect for Diesel at this point in the "feud" because he kept his mouth shut for the most part. DJ needs to follow suit. It's stupid and it actually kills my buzz for their films.

I like Vin Diesel, he's a decent actor, a huge geek and seems like a nice person, but come on man. It really seems like he has a total lack of professional respect for Dwayne Johnson, and he needs to stop talking about it because it really makes him look silly.

Has anyone else besides me noticed that whenever anybody interviews Mark Sinclair, all he says is “noun/verb/Paul Walker, noun/verb/Paul Walker” without deviation?

Also can Mark Sinclair please leave the guy to rest in peace instead of digging up his cadaver every 2-3 years to drag him to every interview Weekend at Bernie’s style whenever he needs to promote his latest direct to video movie?

Johnson may have started out as a wrestler but he's still the better actor. To have Vin Diesel try and tell you how to act would be insulting. It seems Johnson is usually pretty good about these kinds of things and normally lets them slide. However, it sounds like he's had just about enough of Diesel and his "Feud" and is basically telling him as nice as possible to shut up already. 5 years is long enough to maybe let it go. He's the producer of a film series that's working on it's 11th installment. He's not exactly branching out... Seems he's turned this one franchise into a career. Neither one of them is good enough to be giving acting advice and that is the job of the acting coach anyway, the person who acts as a liaison between the producer/director and actor to get what they want from the character without this kind of headbutting.

I wasn't taking sides in this feud (don't even watch the F&F series), but Johnson's mockery at this point is starting to make him look like the villain. He could have just said no comment, or I disagree with Diesel's description of the situation but I'll leave it at that, etc. Sometimes if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything because you'll just make yourself look worse.

@Master_Katarn: I don't know, not that I care much either way but reading Vin Diesel's comments it's like...dude get over yourself. The Rock's role in that movie was basically a hard ass federal agent, not exactly a tough and demanding role for Dwayne Johnson to pull off. And not to put down Vin Diesel but he's not exactly a master class actor. He's most known for these movies and Chronicles of Riddick, two roles that don't have much depth to them.

But like I said don't really care about who's the good guy/bad guy in this situation. Both are fine, successful actors for what they do, though I do find Dwayne Johnson to be the more entertaining of the two.

@Master_Katarn: Agreed. I know nothing about the details, so wouldn't no "who is in the wrong" here, but Johnson's response was childish and lame. Although the, 'giving tough love' and the comment about Diesel's movie 'giving Johnson a career after wrestling' is also a lame comment. Certainly if I was Johnson, that'd bother me, thinking: 'You thought you gave me a career buddy?' - type of thing. By then Johnson was already decently established as an action actor, before Fast Five and his presence did elevate the movies, IMO. But - I like 'em both, and it sucks to see this type of thing. Just every body say 'no comment' and lets move on.

Just, move on with your lives already. You are both 2 grown adults that should have the capability of acting your age.
