Dying Light 2 Takes 500 Hours To "Fully Complete," Dev Says--But There Is More To The Story

It won't take anywhere near that long to complete the main story and sidequests, however.

Players will need to spend about 500 hours to "fully complete" Dying Light 2, developer Techland has confirmed, while also acknowledging that this is the projected run time for a 100% run. Finishing the game's story and side quests will take less time, the studio said. [Update: Techland has now further clarified the details surrounding Dying Light 2's run time--get all the information here]

500 hours is about the same time it would take to walk from Warsaw (where Techland has an office) to Madrid, the studio said.

Plenty of responses came in related to Techland's 500-hour tweet, and the studio issued its own response to clarify the matter further. The studio said, "500 hours is related to maxing out the game--finishing all the quests, endings, and exploring every part of the world, but a regular player should finish the story + side quests and do quite a lot of exploring in less than 100 hours, so don't worry!"

In another tweet, Techland said it will take about 70-80 hours to finish the main story and side quests "if you're not in a rush."

In other news, Dying Light 2's next and final Dying 2 Know livestream is coming on January 13, promising a "huge info drop" for the game.

Dying Light 2 launches on February 4 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and it will also be available via the cloud for Nintendo Switch. The game is also coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Everyone who preorders the game gets the Reload and the Reach for the Sky packs, which come with special outfits, weapons, and skins. The Reach for the Sky pack specifically was designed in partnership with Rosario Dawson (The Mandalorian) who voices a character in Dying Light 2.

February 2022 is shaping up to be a massive month for new releases. Other games releasing in February include Horizon: Forbidden West, The King of Fighters XV, and Sifu. Also coming that month is Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion and the Saints Row reboot.

I have played dying light og for 1000+ hours since it has release. Really excited to play this one. This release and the gamespot community reminds me of when fornite very first released and how much hate that game was getting.

After all the delays and issue during development, I have my doubts about this one. I really do hope it comes out right, the first one was great.

So many games so little time as an adult. I'd take 25hr of quality over 80hr of filler quests any day.

I've learned that generally, the longer a game is, the worse it is.

From experience.

Excluding strategy games, ofc. Those have substance to back up that time sync.

@uninspiredcup: I can kinda see why you might say that. There are games that just put too much filler in. But I definitely would not say the longer the game, the worse it is as many of the best games I’ve ever played are quite long: Witcher 3 (173 hrs to 100%) and Skyrim (273 hours to 100%) as prime examples. Metro Exodus, Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, and Nioh were around the 50 hour mark for main and side quests.

I hear you though: it is a bigger challenge to the devs to keep all those hours fun and satisfying. I am thinking maybe their new dynamic storytelling with multiple paths is part of the reason for the higher hours to complete.

Fingers crossed they pull it off.

Playthrough time not a problem. Have many other things to do in my life and can't invest most of it to just playing games. Will be just taking my time killing zombies and monkeying around.

some games are just too long, one of the reasons im not liking open world anymore. its all filler bullshit to make the game longer but not really value.

Most of those hours are just filler time looking for items hidden in the world. Many games do this. I don't even see the point in stating this number as there are many other games who could top it.

@lion2447: I find both numbers presented together nice to know. (Main and side quests AND 100% completion time). Using the first game as a reference, it tells me that there is possibly going to be more detail and world building. And it’s just a neat bit if info.

I might be more out off if it was from another dev, but Dying Light was so full of great content, I see it as a plus. Fingers crossed they pull it off.

meh. its a learning thing. back with ps1 and xbox i loved some games really a lot and wished they had content beyond 10 or 20 or even 100 hours (splinter cell, morrowind).

so maybe to someone somewhere dying light 2 is the best game ever and he will love to be able to play the game for 500 hours. thats great. myself back in that xbox era i still could have goal to 100% all games and now its impossible which in some ocd way is sad but i still get moneys worth of story mode and some side activities.

ofc it would be nicer if the 500 hours was only amazing content but even if its sucky content its still better to have 10 hours of great and 490 hours of weak than just 10 hours of great and then nothing.

now if the first 10 hours are shit as well then **** it

I am beyond fatigued with these mammoth open world games right now. 🤷‍♀️

I'm so glad for games like Guardians of the Galaxy, (it was such a refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable pallette cleanser from the recent glut of overbloated timesuck titles).

Also, no mention of Elden Ring for February?

@thecupidstunts: meh, I really enjoyed GotG, but six days after getting it I was Platinum done, and will be done forever because there is nothing new to gain from it. I don't feel like I got my money's worth and honestly wished I had waited for it to hit bargain bins.

@lord2fli: Yeah it depends on why you game. If you determine the value of a game by the amount of time you can spend with it, then there are certain games you will find disappointing. But some people play video games solely for the experience. Just like a movie, sometimes a short experience can stick with you for the rest of your life. Whether it’s a cutscene, plot twists, certain characters, the music, the dialogue, or the sheer intensity of a certain mission.

@lord2fli: Fair enough. I totally understand your points, it just really stood out to me in a good way among a sea of 'me too' open world bloat.

It's length was great for me, and I liked it enough that I will wait a bit and do another run-through later this year. Glad you got some enjoyment out of it though. 😺

Ugh. 70-80 hours? We need more games like The Outer Worlds. 30ish hours to experience everything the game has to offer is perfect. For the past several years, I’ve been super over these 50+ hour games. It would be fine if there wasn’t much else to play, but we have so many crazy long games thrown at, these days, there’s just not enough time to get through them all. At least not while feeling like you were able to do everything you wanted to do.

Not to nitpick, but if you're going to list the biggest video game releases coming out in February, you may want to mention Elden Ring.

Yeah, no. If it takes you 80 hours to finish the main quest and side quests, what more content can there be that takes 400+ more hours? "Exploring"?

This makes me want the game less 🤷🏻‍♂️. There are so many games out there that I wanna play. Why would I want to spend 70-80h on just one of them? Especially since that always mean a lot of boring fillers.

@Sushiglutton: thats how i feel, i have 5+ games i want to play right now and dont want to devote 6 months to one of them. i want value for what im paying, so like 30 hours for gameplay i think is fine, but 100+ hours? im never going to complete that. days gone for 30-35 hours i think and i was tired of the game by the end of it. 50% of the missions were filler trash. im afraid to say this though because then they'll give us a game thats 4 hours long like call of duty

@Sushiglutton: I hate boring repetitive side craps that nowadays developers create, they are adding hours by repeating the same thing over and over and over to the point you throw up.

I'm sure 425 of those hours are Ubisoft style busy work since that's what open world games are now I'm hoping for more but it's just how things are now well elden ring and botw 2 will have work put into the worlds side content so I guess not all open worlds

@tbird7586: not sure why people are jumping to this conclusion with this dev. Other Devs sure but... Did you play the OG Dying Light? I found it fantastic and one if the few games I have played all the way through multiple times.
