E3 '07: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Hands-On

Atari shows off its latest Dragon Ball Z fighting game for the Wii, and we take a hands-on look.

While the first three Dragon Ball Z: Budokai fighting games published by Atari were pretty straightforward 3D fighting games, it's safe to say that the series took a real hard left turn with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. The behind-the-back perspective definitely lent a visceral feel to the action, but the control scheme was often too arcane for its own good, something that was exacerbated by the additional motion controls in last year's Wii version of Tenkaichi 2. With that uneven history in mind, we were pleasantly surprised when we got our hands on Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for the Wii earlier today, which, at first blush, has streamlined the gameplay experience significantly, better integrated the Wii motion controls, and piled on a heap of new content.

First, let's talk numbers. In terms of sheer content, Tenkaichi 3 will feature over 30 unique battle stages, and over 150 different fighters, more than 20 of which are new to Tenkaichi 3. Only a handful of these characters were playable in the demo we saw, but fans will be pleased to know that Android #13, King Vegeta, Nail, and SSJ4 Gogeta will all be playable fighters. Also of interest is the addition of online play, a first for a Dragon Ball Z game. Though details are scarce at the moment, you can expect two-player action over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, either against random opponents or against buddies that you've exchanged a game-specific friend code with.

While all that might sound well and good, it wasn't until we got hands-on with the game that we really started to appreciate the changes that developer Namco Bandai has made to the series. A lot of the actions that required specific button presses in the past will happen automatically now, and it does away entirely with in-game use of the sensor bar, something that was a source of frustration in Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii. You'll remain permanently locked onto your opponent, so that all of your movement controls are relative to their position, and your base movement speed is fast. Controls seem to make more sense now, too, with basic forward, back, and side-to-side movement governed by the Nunchuk analog stick, vertical movement controlled with the Z and C buttons, basic melee attacks executed with the A button, basic energy attacks with the B button, and if your character is capable of it, you can hit the 1 button to perform a transformation.

We found that these simplified controls made for much more fast-paced fights, but it was how the Wii motion controls were used for special attacks that really caught our eye. Each character has three special attacks that you can charge up for and activate by holding right, down, or left on the Wii Remote D pad. If you need to charge up "ki" energy, it appears to happen automatically, and once you have enough ki to actually launch the attack, you'll see a pantomime of how you need to move the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk in order to actually pull off the attack. When we were playing as SSJ4 Gogeta, we launched a high-powered Kamehameha attack, which required us to pull back and push forward the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk in tandem, in a way that closely mimicked how a Dragon Ball Z character would actually throw a Kamehameha wave. It was a simple, but satisfying experience.

All this seems like steps in the right direction for the Tenkaichi series. From speaking with some of the folks from Namco Bandai about the game, we got the sense that creating an experience that is a more natural fit for the Wii has become more of a priority for them, and so far it shows. You can look forward to more coverage of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 leading up to the game's release in November.

This game is gonna rock. i bought all of the budokai games including shin budokai and super DBZ. and this one looks so good but i hope that on the wii you can use the classic controller because it would be better if nintendo did that so if u dont wont to move about u could just relax and just press the buttons

Personally, These changes don't really seem to make a MASSIVE difference in my opinion - I am a massive DBZ fan and I play DBZ BT2 non-stop even though i got it yonks ago. However the additional characters sound nice, I just hope they move more than they did in the cutscenes of BT2, They were limited to using the actions they used when they fought - I thought that was annoying. And another thing that botherd me about it was the Broly saga - it had a Bright city background unsmashed version - and I wanted to fight in that! =( (It was almost mocking us because we couldnt fight in there =/. BT3 sounds good for the online play but I hope for the next one they may think about 2v2 matches, like to players vs 2 computers on a split screen but on the same team, if you get me. It would almost be like an RPG, but not... I hope the next game is different to the tenkaichi's because theyre starting to get repetative... Well yeah - Peace out.

I've never played any of the 3D DBZ fighting games before, this one looks like a good one to start with.

I also think the complaining about he motion-sensing on the Wii version of BT2 was overrated. On the other hand, the ps2 version came off a lot better than the Wii one, due to the controls. I, at least, thought the Wii version was too whacky and clumsy. I'm real excited about the new controls.

They simplified the controls?! Why?! Because a lot of people complained about adding motions to combos? Meh. I like the sound of charging a specific special, but what's going to happen to the guard button. And I don't like the idea of being permanently locked on to an opponent. Oh well, online will make up for it.

the online battles will work like any other NWFC (soudns like wrestling hauhaauhauha) match-up up until now, either through FCs or through a selector. I also hope they'll put in a rank option

wow, i luved the DBZ TB 2, the graphics were a little better on the Wii than on the PS2, and personally, i luved how the controls works, i prefer the motion to the non stop button mashing...although theres still ALOT of it in the wii game. I think the new controls for the wii seem interesting, and im definatly going to check this out when it come out. and 150 CHARACTERS! I love having all the characters, but i also hate it!!! I can never decide who to play as...theres just to many...guess its expected from a franchise thats been going on for so long...and why cant they add a DBZ Adeventure, DBGT adventure and Dragon ball adventure? that way they will cover most of the story...and it will be longer, and therefore more satisfying...cos i thought DBZ BT2 was a little bit to short...

to be honest i liked the last one on ps2 but couldn't get into on the wii because i expected the controls to be diffrent, i was hoping the punching to be like the boxing on wii sports and you would do the movements that the charaters did to use the ki moves instead of just moving the pointer of and on the screen, but i may get this if they it gets good reviews from people (not from GS couse they seem to only see the negatives in games like this)

Nintendo please pay attention to your 3rd party games like this one. It really looks GOOD so help em out at least so they can sell more! And finally an online fighter. I'm already psyked about it.

Looks pretty good so far, not sure if ill get it on wii or ps2 yet though.. I gotta say though.. I'm really glad that they still get alot of the voice actors for the game.. that stuff almost never happens and especially when this series has been going so long. ..Oh and also for those people who are being stupid, the characters that ryan mentions are the ones that were playable in the demo, android 13 and SSJ4 Gogeta were both playable in BT2, SO CHILL.

YEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!! another dbz, i almost fainted with excitement when i saw goku's meteo combination combo in gameplay movie 1. fans will immediately recognise the ending kamehameha he used to blast picolo in dragonball. if the wii version has the graphics it deserves, i may consider the new control scheme as i have already tried it with BT2 which kinda sucked on the wii cos it looked exactly like the ps2 one and had to be returned to get my 35 quid back. otherwise, this game may be a reason to dust my ps2 and get it ready for some action again.

all those people that said the wii controls for dbz:bt2 were to complex should sell their wii's and go back to ps or xbox.....i had no problem learning the wii-mote controls and find that making the controls easier is an insult to gamers as hardcore as me.......

I loved DBZ:BT2, but I don't think it got the rating it deserved. GS gave it a pretty low score, but I think it deserved at least an 8. Hopefully, BT3 will be twice as good and maybe GS will rate this one the right way.

Their doing good, but until they leave the original japanese version of the game alone *music wise*, I'm not sure if i'll buy it. They have the japanese voices yeah, but they change all the music from the original sparking! *original, neo!, or meteor* to funeral rock. Though if the online works, i might just settle for the changed american version. If not, the wait for the wii freeloader continues.

Also, SSJ4 Gogeta was playable in Tenkaichi 2. Whoever wrote this never played Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii, just read how they bashed it here. I just hope this time they don't take away characters in the american version.

Not sure about buying, but I'll definitely rent it to see what it's like. Sounds nice, especially for me,a DBZ fan, who has never had a Dragon Ball game xD. Even though I alaways had the craving, I never thought it'd be worth the spent money, maybe this one will PS: to pspholder, I agree with hte other guy, even though 360 has a better array of games now, until the end of the year Wii will be kickin' some serious ass with it's must-haves

To Pspholder: I have a Wii, and I think it's pretty much the best thing ever. I'd definitely advise getting both at some point, but for my money, I'd start with a Wii. There's a few absolutely must-have games for the Wii coming out soon.

a few changes can't go wrong or can it? I prepher the Street Fighter style buttons where you have to preform lots of diffrent buttons to do special attacks ect.. just pressing A will get boring.. dosen't need any kind of skill or anything of the sort but I guess adanced players will have truble vs begginers so game on!

Well they're finally taking some steps in the right direction here, the better controls are great but I have a feeling that the two (probably) biggest problems will persist. 1. Characters are too similiar, sure tons of characters are great but usually they're just reskins of other ones, tough to fix but hopefully they'll try harder. 2. Where's the 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 3 on 1, 2 on 1 battles? With DBZ it'd be great to actually have more then 2 characters fighting it out all at once. Hopefully they'll improve on this in this game or in number 4, I'm definitley willing to wait for some great DBZ action like explained.
