E3 '07: Show floor draws mixed reactions

GameSpot tours Barker Hangar and finds it sparser, smaller, hotter, and less crowded; exhibitors sound off on venue, organization.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--"This is ****ing insane." That's how a first-time visitor to the Electronic Entertainment Expo summed up last year's E3, but many veterans of the event felt the same way. From May 10-12, 2006, over 60,000 people crammed into the Los Angeles Convention Center, which was temporarily transformed into a deafening, blinding maze of blaring music, whooping sound effects, dazzling neon, and giant screens showing endless loops of gameplay. One exhibitor, NCsoft, was even fined $5,000 when its ear-splitting stage show began to drown out those of its neighbors. When the closing bugle sounded on the last day, many wondered to themselves, "How can E3 possibly get any bigger?"

Well, it couldn't. Two and a half months after E3 2006 ended, its organizing body, the Electronic Software Association, announced changes for the 2007 event. Rechristened the E3 Media and Business Summit, the show would be a much smaller event. Instead of masses of tangentially industry-related attendees stuffing themselves inside multimillion dollar displays at the LACC, the new E3 would only have around 5,000 game developers, publisher staffers, analysts, and media members hopping between a variety of locations in Santa Monica.

To many, the logistics of E3 2007 sounded overly complex. However, after the event unofficially kicked off on Tuesday night, much of it proved relatively simple. Microsoft and Nintendo's press briefings were within a block of one another, and almost all of the hotel suites booked by publishers for private games showings were within a half-mile radius.

Other than Sony's Culver City press event, which required hundreds of reporters to make a mad dash across Los Angeles from Nintendo's event, there was only one sticking point--the Fairmont Miramar. Since the ESA held its back-to-back-to-back third-party press conferences in the Starlight Room, every person attending them was forced to leave at its conclusion. This forced attendees of consecutive events to pack up their bags--or, in many cases, all their video equipment--walk about 15 feet, wait for the room to be "reset," and then reenter the same space. The incessant shuffling caused a cascade of delays at the Fairmont and no end of grumbling from those who were repeatedly displaced.

Less clear-cut was the reaction to the main E3 show floor. Its location at the Barker Hangar was relatively close, but still required attendees to take a shuttle bus or drive several miles. Once there, the venue itself suffered from the fact it is, indeed, a hangar. With few clouds in the sky, the sun's rays turned the simple tin structure into a giant hotbox, a situation that was unevenly remedied by a haphazard air-conditioning setup. Some booths, like Square Enix's, were pleasantly cool, while gamers at other displays were sweating in the oppressive atmosphere.

In fact, even the term "booth" was a misnomer, since none had any walls. Each publisher's area was an open array of identical tables, with any sort of signage kept to a Zen-like minimum. The names of games were only allowed on small placards placed under game station monitors, which were themselves all restricted to a few uniform sizes. And while the noise level in the hangar was loud, there were none of the ear-splitting media presentations in years past. As Midway president David Zucker told GameSpot, the new format is designed to "let the games speak for themselves."

Problem was, there simply weren't that many games. Barker Hangar is between one-third and one-half the area of one of the LACC's halls, and the booths were no larger than 20 feet by 20 feet (and even those were limited to a handful of big exhibitors like Sony and Nintendo). Although the ESA used the strategic placement of lounges and shifting overhead lighting to make the space seem livelier, the show floor was noticeably empty. The low attendance was good for editors who needed to play games for previews, but most of the big games were shown behind closed doors at hotels near the Santa Monica Pier. The sparsely populated hall also served as a constant reminder of how downsized the new E3 really was.

By far, the most popular booth was that of Electronic Arts. A crowd of around a dozen people was ever-present around the single PlayStation 3 running Burnout: Paradise and an Xbox 360 playing Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. Also on hand were Xbox 360 stations for Madden NFL 08, Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, NASCAR 08, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, and NBA Live 08. Two top PC offerings--Hellgate: London and Crysis--were also on hand in playable form.

Though it had nearly 100 PS3, PS2, and PSP demos at E3 2006, Sony had under a dozen kiosks playable on the show floor a year later. Most looked polished, though, with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, and God of War: Chains of Olympus drawing the lion's share of attention. Folklore, NBA 08, and Warhawk were less popular, and the booths for Jeane D'Arc and Buzz! the Mega Quiz were almost always abandoned.

There was almost always a line at the three Wii Fit stations at Nintendo's booth, where various visitors engaged in contortions on the game's footpad peripheral. Three other eagerly anticipated games from the Mario Factory--Brain Age 2, Super Mario Galaxy, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass--were also present, at two stations apiece.

Though the majority of console demos at Barker were on Xbox 360s, Microsoft had the least impressive space of the big three. Five of its ten stations were dedicated to third-party titles--Guitar Hero III, Madden NFL 08, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08. Halo 3 was nowhere to be found, with Project Gotham Racing 4 and Viva Pinata Party Animals being the only two first-party 360 games. Despite Microsoft's efforts to stoke interest in its Games for Windows initiative, it only displayed two PC games--Flight Simulator and the Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties expansion pack.

Besides EA, several other third-party publishers' booths stood out. Guitar Hero III and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 squared off across the aisle between Activision and Ubisoft, with the former blaring Guns n' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" and the latter offering a Wii party game to Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." The lack of a playable Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway meant that Ubisoft lost the shooter battle to Activision, which drew intense interest due to two Xbox 360 stations for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. On the other side of a divider, Midway's John Woo-inspired Stranglehold elicits chortles of bullet-ballet-inspired glee on the 360.

Other exhibitors at Barker included Bandai Namco, Sierra Entertainment, Sega, THQ, Square Enix, Konami, Eidos Interactive, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Majesco, 2K Games, Atari, and Sony Online Entertainment. But did the exhibitors feel like they got their money's worth?

"This is pretty weird," said a rep for one company with a booth, speaking under condition of anonymity. "I'm not sure if we'd do it again, if there's an E3 next year." Another was slightly more upbeat, saying the scaled-down format "beats having to fight your way through a crowd of GameStop clerks each day." He also noted that the "lines" at Barker rarely exceeded a dozen people, meaning the wait to play games could be measured in minutes--not hours.

A rep for another exhibitor was less diplomatic. "Are you kidding? This whole thing is a joke. All our interesting stuff is back at the hotel." Another, senior employee at a major third-party publisher was downright scathing when speaking about the ESA. "They blew it. The stuff at the Fairmont was so badly organized--everyone, even the broadcast people had to file out of that same room every time. And the hangar? Ridiculous. There's no point in even having a show floor, if that's all it's going to be."

Is this last opinion shared by the majority of companies who shelled out to show on the Barker Hangar floor? Since virtually no companies would comment on the matter on the record, it's hard to get an accurate picture. Next year's show, if there is one, will be telling.

Ok, I wasn't there but... I agree with these last guys. Since I can remember, E3 was that marvelous time of the year that you'd droll over dramatically unveiled games, got to see lots of new gameplay videos and trailers to those already anticipated games (where in the world are the new videos for Brawl, FFXIII and Versus XIII? Nowhere? Why? Because the games weren't even there!)... I had lots of exams and college stuff these last two weeks that I couldn't follow this "E3" closely, but I took this weekend off to do some catching up and guess what? It took only a few hours. I'm deeply disappointed with what they've done, this E3 Business and Media Summit or whatever they call it sucked! Now there's only TGS to give us all the hot news. But hopefully, the ESA will think hard about how they screwed up and do something about it.

I don't know if this has been stated by someone else or not, as the comments take up like 54 times the space of the actual story, but I'm fine with the E3 change. On G4's viewer video question all I saw were nerds that made me look cool whine about how much it all sucks that they can't sweat their way through the booths and ogle booth babes anymore, but while this is an excellent way to advertise to 60,000+ people at the convention, millions more are stuck at home, watching what games were noticed through all the lights and glamor, while a shaky and low quality video plays with too much background noise to hear a single thing! Watching E3 from my home on G4 and the net. And does anyone besides me HATE Kevin Pereira?

dragontech22, it isn't really bad for developers... not as long as we have GDC. This is a time where companies generally don't have to prepare a cool demo to show, nor do they have to worry about putting up flashy stuff to attract people. At GDC, we get our own Awards ceremony, and basically lots of parties at night throughout the week, open bar and all! Plus, we get a chance to mingle and meet fellow developers. It's really fun.

What a shame. The view shifting towards "just a business" I mean. I'm sure the people who poor the years of work into making entertainment don't feel the same. If it were just a business then they would probably prefer stock broker or insurance sales, its a more steady income. The fact is that while the managers and CEO's are definitely only looking for income, the people who actually make the GAMES is cause they want and enjoy making entertainment. Entertaining is what the E3 events of past were about. Many people would go to E3 partially for the booth girls, socialization with other like-minded gamers, and general party like atmosphere. You might say that its more fun without crowds, but lets face it, great dance clubs are crowded, and people still go and enjoy the hell out of it. If they were empty, people just wouldn't go. I think it truly is sad when a medium originally built around, and made big because of the idea of entertainment is now taking the approach of business first, fun last. Greed is a terrible thing. ps. I miss booth girls! :(

derubermensch1, it's only free advertisement if your game gets noticed... REALLY noticed. Small developers are more concerned with getting their games on online portals for cheap than they are with spending a ton of cash to sit in a crowded show that's too busy looking at the next MGS or Mario to look their way. For a small developer to get their game noticed at an E3 is a rarity, not the norm.

What "was" so great about e3 is that the gamers got to test the games out. that doesn't mean the media isn't into the games, but it does eliminate all the word of mouth hype the gamers raved about. If they are so worried about e3 being a party festival they should do it a little different. Maybe limiting tickets to 30k or even 25k would be a better solution, it still keeps it relatively small, and gives the gamer a chance to experience next years entertainment now. just my 2 cents

It's sad that there's so many comments from company reps, in this article and others, where they dimminish the importance of the employees that work for EB, GameStop, etc. On G4 I heard one person say it is nice not having "the assistants to the assistants to the store managers" crowding the floor space. Have some respect for the people that actually sell your games. If retail chains did not exist, then developers would be relegated to selling games on online or through their own channels, which smaller developers (and even the big ones) really can't afford to do. There would be no luxuries of releasing a game "when it's done" because there would be such strict budget requirements due to the fact that sales would not nearly be as high. There is an intangible benefit to having retail employees attend E3 and that is buzz. They return to their stores and talk these games up since they've played them. I don't work for a retail chain, but I have been to four E3's and here's an example of what I'm talking about: I played the Wii at E3 last year. When I went to EB to pick up a pre-order shortly after my return, the employees were talking to some teenagers about the Wii. It was all speculation about if it was cool or just gimmicky, but overall everyone was excited from what they had read on the internet. Since I was behind them in line and overheard their conversation, I mentioned I had actually played the Wii. Everyone's attention was devoutly focused on me now, teenagers and EB employees alike. So many questions were asked and answers were given for about 20 minutes but I eventually had to cut it short and get out of there with my game. However, I left those people more invigorated about the new console and it's intricacies than any article could hope to convey since I was a real person, in the flesh, telling them all about how awesome E3 was and how excited I was for the Wii, especially since I had reservations about it going in. Without hands on experience, a retail rep is nothing more than a salesman who reads Gamespot and can provide absolutely 0% of extra input to those customers who already read about this stuff online. So now E3 2007 is over and there was no mindblowing presentation of Super mario Galaxy where thousands of people could get their hands on it and spread the word, not even the people who sell these games for a living. Some may make the arguement that the person who has a fan site for the PS3 shouldn't be allowed to attend E3, they just get in the way. Well that's one less person to create hype and anticipation. Now multiply that by 60,000 and then multiply 60,000 by how many people read online articles or talk to ther retail reps per day worldwide before the release of a game. Sure, E3 of old was expensive, but it was so big it was almost like free advertising. how much more do these companies need to spend now in advertising to compensate for the lack of exposure? Let's face it. The big publishers don't need to sell their major products to anyone in the industry. Everyone in the idustry knows their value. What about the smaller developers struggling to break into the industry (word up Kentia)? Could they afford to attend this year's toned down E3 when they know their exposure will be severely limited? I think, after this year, we all know what the ESA thinks of anyone who isn't Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, EA, etc... Stay in your garage, small developers, you have now been stripped of your chance to realise your dreams

I'm still trying to understand why E3 should be different from any other technology industry convention like Semicon West. Unless it's really necessary to have costumed booth babes and enormous screens and/or pyrotechnic displays to convey the latest news on the Madden franchise. It's not a theme park, it's a business.

Fusekazuki...so the "fight" over E3 is just plain foolish and you say others should "grow up" but then it's ok for YOU to join in and express your opinion on the subject as I did? I didn't start any "fight"...someone admittedly trolled me and I responded and now you're butting in it...but I should grow up? So you declare E3 is a failure and then say that's your take....well, my take is that is wasn't a failure (read my reasons why before I was trolled)...done! See....no fighting :)

Hahahaha. flex49 rules. Jingwa, don't you it's not nice to take out your frustrations on others? But seriously, how can you prefer Star Trek to Splinter Cell? Really. I'm not a fan a SC by any means, and I would immediately choose that over ST. The only explanation I can find that you wouldn't see anything good at last year's E3 is that you have complete and utter crap taste in games. So remember before you go bashing other people for their opinions, we can bash you just as easily.

I don't post often but this fight over E3 that some of you guys are having is just plain foolish. Grow up the both of you, E3 was pretty much a failure, or at least thats my take from this and many other articles. I was typically hyped for E3 week and coming to Gamespot to read the reviews and hot new titles and now all e3 is a a poorly done "business" summit. Just leave the games out of there because that love is gone. What happened to gamers making games? Wasn't that what E3 became? A huge party to promote their games, it was loud and obnoxious and to it's very core it was about games. There was the one guy that was trashing gamestop employees during this interview. Yea it's fun now but those same people you trashed are the same people that hype your game and get copies presold. Kiss that goodbye with the new format. It's really sad because it did feel like a party as well as a place where the developers could meet their fans and trade ideas. But maybe this is the business element that is needed. Hopefully E for All will be what E3 used to be. Then there will be two sides to the industry.

E3 is dead. The ESAA stupidly killed it. Don't expect it to come back next year. A damn shame. Each year I looked forward to the spectacle and big news coming from E3. This year? Nada. No new games. Nothing to get excited about. What a bust.

I remember when E3 wasn't just a show, it was an experience. I was promised that E3 would have a defining focus on the games, but it seems like that's the part of E3 that got the shaft. There was hardly anything shown there that I didn't already expect to see. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of developers skip out on the next E3, or save the money and set up a half ass booth for a half ass show.

At least there's still TGS and E For All. While TGS isn't as exciting, there are always major announcements from that show. As for E For All, I wonder how that'll turn out. Hopefully it'll be good, much better than E307 hopefully.

amaraklov What people (fans) don't get is E3 is primarily a retailer / press event... to secure shelf space, and promote the games. --- In that case, this show was a colossal failure. The retailer presence wasn't there, at least from the major chains.

That no one was willing to put their name on record tells a lot. Only one positive comment, and some really critical ones. I fully expect there to be no E3 at all in '08.

ahhh jingwa....taking your frustrations out on me will only give you more frustrations after I chew up and disect your comments like a tender steak....by number ;) 1. Easy, you say? You're right...it was easy. E3 2007 showed more games coming out THIS year than ever before. But as with most trolling gamers like you.....you were not satisfied. As an example.....Xbox360, alone, previewed an unprecedented 15 EXCLUSIVE titles coming out before 2008. And that's not including cross platform games. It makes me wonder what gamer tastes you have if you didnt see anything "half decent". That you rated Star Trek: Klingon Academy a 9.1 and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory a 4.3 on your profile leads me to believe your gaming tastes are VERY suspect...or just plain suck :) 2. I guess you have amnesia on the past 8 E3s. Game developers are present to showcase their games....not reps. Besides that...making demos for you ungrateful gamers takes time out of focusing undivided attention to producing a complete bug free finished product come release time for that game. As a gamer, I can see you have no clue what it takes to develop a AAA title. 3. I don't even know what to say to your comments here but...HUH? That aside....I'll tell you that besides having a life that includes enjoying movies, tv, music and sports as alternate entertainment choices besides games. I've played Burnout Revenge on XBL for over a year at least once a week and have had a grand ole time :) 4. Sorry to bring this to your attention...but those "free bits" that you get from other sources are AFTER the product is finished. I guess The Killers gives you a "free bit" preview when they've only finished half their song or CD....give me a break! 5. Lastly...you must be a Sony or Wii fanboy because the 360 free content this year could not be finished in a day and the 360 doesn't get ports....period...except for VF5 which will be better than the original ;) In a way, I'm glad the game industry doesn't try to please people like you or I'd wind having to play games on par with Star Trek: Klingon Academy.

im trolling and im bugged by this years E3, so who should i take my frustrations out on :). ahhh flex49 will do :) regards to your coments by your numbers. 1> "Have you all forgot that last year was the introduction of 2 new consoles and 2005's E3 previewed Xbox360? How do you expect to top that?" Easy just make it about the games, new consoles have next to no games to show, so u have to wait a friging year to see anything half decent except maybe that 1 rare game on release...hardly a feld day worth getting super excited about. 2>its not like they have their entire development teams down at E3, its all about the money and advertising, they send out reps who wont slow down game devlopment, who then show off their games etc which half the globe gets to look at in some form or other and go "dam i want that". There is only a fraction of the gaming content to look over compared to last years, seriously this years E3 left me bored except for 1or2 games with only a handful of vids...perhaps E3 costs were down, but i dont think E3 will boost their sales much this year round, to little content, to little advertising for the products, so overal less sales for the future and more money spent or further advertisments to make up for it. 3>Facts of life are when was the last time u played a game 1month without getting much sleep? hell a week? do u remember the last time u played a game for over a year before u got bored of playing it every week with your friends? Hardly any games these days give u more then a week or 2 lifespan on single player and then its up to the multiplayer to keep u going till your next game. Demo's dont spoil anything except the reality the game may actually suck like most games do. There hasnt been really anything new in games for yonks. Why doesnt every game have co-op as a standard, its one thing we all love, yet developers make excuses year after year after year, hell most games need a mod to include holding duel weapons, because developers cant buggered including what is obviously fun...let alone a huge arsenal of weapons like goldeneye(N64) had. There are hundreds of games from the past with things which were simply fun, its hard to find modern games using even half of that content in 1 game. Facts are if the game = fun its sells, so developers giving excuses it costs more development time etc, just means = less sales and that seems to be the standard for modern game development, just do the min and push the graphics a tad = it sells for small expense and the consumer wants another game in a few weeks once again. 4>There are so many sites online which have free bits of soundtrack/video of movies/music cd's etc supplied by the publishers to entice us to buy the full packet, it just aint funny, just like with game demo's/trailers etc....besides since when did u ever recieve a free copy of crisis in your mailbox? its not like u get to play the game from start to end free at E3 is it??? no just a demo or just enough to see how the game runs, to leave u wanting more, just like everything else. 5>Yea its great isnt it, to bad i managed to get through all the E3 content in 1 day, took me a week for last years and im sure i missed alot of stuff from user uploaded movies and hell there was so much game content to go through...this year blah...couple of game vids and a small interview section...amazing E3 indeed, bet u next year people will have to start paying developers for private tours because they cant get hardly anything from the cell blocks down at E3 except a chair/desk and a monitor with trailer...few panflets also to give it that extra class :). Ahwel your right lots of games like every year before us, lets just hope with directx 10 they stop making excuses and hope they remember that consoles arent simply a place ot port games to and from with maximum quality loss.

Know your audience. These are individuals that are interested in the current state and future of the gaming industry. They need only one thing to make E3 a success. Booth Babes!!!! Come on. Getting to stare at live girls dressed in scantily clad video game girls is the sweetest eye candy. We could care less about what Moore or Hirai have to say. Just bring on the women!

Huh? I don't understand what most of the commenters here were expecting of the new E3. I thought this scaled down E3 was just right. And it has everyone buzzing in July instead of May and alot gamers talking, reacting (some too negatively) and downloading... ..so it served its purpose. 1. This year's E3 had to be a definite letdown if you look at the history of the convention. Have you all forgot that last year was the introduction of 2 new consoles and 2005's E3 previewed Xbox360? How do you expect to top that? This year it was about the games and I didn't want previews of games I can't play for years (like in 2005...ie Killzone 2...and it's still not out). I wanted to know what I'll be playing THIS YEAR and for me E3 2007 did that with flying colors. Nothing can top E3 2005 & 2006 until new consoles come out so get used to it. 2. The companies wanted to save money and they did. Also they didn't have to spend months of preparation for this E3 so we gamers win in the end because alot of games are coming out sooner than usual because they can concentrate more on game development and not just public relations. 3. To all the people complaining about no demos of Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, GTA IV, Heavenly Sword and Lair....I'm glad they DIDN'T. Demos are for games that don't get the media attention and are sleepers. You already know about the games I mentioned ad nauseum...can anything be left for surprise nowadays? A demo would kill what's left of the unknown. Look what demos did to Crackdown and Motorstorm.....we saw too much of these and other games so when they did come out they were sort of a letdown. I don't even want to see anymore trailers....I want to be surprised by Halo3, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect and Bioshock, Heavenly Sword, SSB Melee, Metroid 3. Sometimes Nintendo keeps too much a secret but I'll take that over knowing too much. 4. To all the freeloaders and complainers....does the movie & TV industry, record industry or sports industry give us free movies or music cds of their new product?...NO! We get more free stuff than all the other industries combined.....BE GRATEFUL! 5. This is going to be the biggest year EVER in games with so many AAA titles released from 3 new consoles. There are usually 2 or 3 killers app...there are great games coming out for every genre....racing, fps, action adventure, casual, rpgs, RTS games, platformers and the best part is there are even original titles in the mix...woohoo! It's great to have AAA games that don't have a number sequel at the end. All in all....be HAPPY! That includes all of us....PS3, Wii and 360 gamers alike.

E3 is over. They wanted the event to die a slow painful death. Well they got their wish. A cheap press release and game play movie would have been more effective. Not to mention far chaper and it would allow the game companies to do what they do best. Make games.

E3 was so horrible this year. I honestly had forgotten about it untill I saw GameSpot was going to have coverage on it, and only then I payed attention to games that I was already looking forward to. I remember back in the day when E3 kicked ass. E3 used to be flash, bang, excitement, everything videogames needed. Now E3 is exactly the stale stereotype gamers used to get. It's all charts and graphs.

They should have called it E2, because they were clearly missing the "Entertainment" aspect of the show. They seem to forget that they are a competing entertainment medium that's up against movies, DVDs, music, sport and TV. I fail to understand the success of the WII. Other than Zelda, most of the games are rubbish and even worse quality than the PS3 which is bad enough. I can't believe people are paying money to play SNES oldies on the system. I can understand the DS though. It has a lot of innovative titles. That doesn't mean the PS3 and 360 get off lightly. Both have problems. The 360 has faulty hardware. It's possible to assume they rushed the machine out too quickly to iron out the faults, or their manufacturing process is faulty. The PS3 is a major f#$k up for Sony. They got themselves into a commanding position, only to shoot themselves in the foot. A machine that's overly expensive, lacks quality software and fails to demonstrate any technical superiority to the 360. Killzone 2 looks great and I have high hopes for it, but nothing on the system so far has made the PS3 look better than the 360. This whole console generation has really thrown a curveball at consumers. Hopefully games like GTA 4, Killzone 2, FF13, MGS 4, Heavenly sword, God of War and Assasin's Creed will fix this. Halo 3 sucks. If he's really a Master Chief, you'd think he could dish out orders instead of standing there saying nothing.

The reason for the snooze-fest this e3 was because it was so late in yr. after a majority of the companies has released info on there fall -winter line-up earlier in the yr. Another thing y leave the huge LA convention center to be frag'd over 11 miles. They could have built a central stage for press for ea. Sony, MS, N conferences. then had everything on one show floor around it providing easy no hassle access. The purpose this yrs. E3 seem to be ttl missed, sure it was smaller good, less expensive for developers but... at the same time there wasn't enough to even go around for the ppl attending that and they needed some wall, sound barrier something to seperate ea. company.

The only problem I had with E3 this year is that no real news seemed to come out of it; it was a real sleeper. Think about it, last year we were blown away by all the game announcements, and this year we didn't really get any news on new, exciting games coming out. I think that's the biggest problem with this year's E3; maybe it was just because nobody had nothing new to show off, I guess we'll have to see what it's like next year.

E3 was never intended to be a consumer show, but it became that way more and more over the years because there really wasn't anything else in the gaming world. It's hardly surprising to me that its first year trying to scale back that there would be problems. They'll probably be ironed out next year, and those developers who were expecting something more will know better next time and be able to factor that into judging if they wish to intend or not.
