E3 2008: Rise of the Argonauts Hands-On

Greek Mythology was even bloodier than we thought.

Jason is not a happy king. Following the murder of his wife, the legend of Greek mythology and king of peaceful Iolcos sets off on a very unpeaceful journey to recover the Golden Fleece. Not to be confused with a warm yellow sweater from the Gap, this Golden Fleece is believed to hold the power to resurrect his wife, Princess Alceme.

At E3 2008, we got our hands on Rise of the Argonauts for the first time, playing through a bit of the Mycenae arena, home to tournament champion and ultimate warrior Achilles. We played a PC build and used an Xbox 360 wired controller--a good thing since this action role-playing game is so combat oriented. As a weapon master proficient in many combat arts, Jason can use a sword, spear, or mace from the beginning of the game. Along the way he'll find five upgrades for each weapon, as well as five improved sets of armor and clothing. The X button is a light attack, A is a shield attack, B evades, and Y unleashes a destructive finisher. Most combos are strung together with variations of X and Y, although switching your weapon in the middle of a combo will also unlock some interesting moves. We hacked and slashed with the sword, pressed a bumper button to switch to a spear, and, with the spear still on Jason's back, bent over and sliced a guy in half.

These finishing moves play into the concept of lethality being pushed by developer Liquid Entertainment. Lead designer Charlie Price kindly pointed out that games are the only medium in which you can attack an enemy with a sword over and over and he won't die. Usually when you attack someone with a sword, he loses at least a limb or a vital organ. To address this issue in Rise of the Argonauts, almost every enemy can be killed with one hit. Figuring out how to do so will take some experimentation, usually with a bevy of X,X,Y combos, but knocking away an enemy's shield will almost always result in a split second where his torso is exposed. At that point, you can slice it in half. Sweet.

What's nice about the combat in Rise of the Argonauts is that it isn't based on back-end dice rolls or hit points. If you slice an enemy in the neck, he'll lose his head. It's that simple, and it's a refreshing change of pace in the hack-and-slash action RPG genre. Along the way you'll also recruit the legendary heroes Hercules, Achilles, Atalanta, and Pan as your Argonauts, and one hero at a time can join you in combat. Each hero will fight enemies independently, but they will also unlock special attacks if you are fighting close to each other. Hercules, for example, will lift enemies in the air and hold them while you carefully aim a decapitation strike.

In addition to pulping an enemy's head with the mace or tossing spears into the hearts of foes from afar, you'll have access to god powers. Your choices in the dialogue tree will curry favor with either Apollo, Hermes, Aries, or Athena, who is actually an omnipotent hottie. Our Jason was currently in the good graces of Hermes, the smart-aleck god of cunning and trickery. Being the guide to the underworld for wayward spirits, Hermes granted us the power to create a portal to hell that would quickly suck into the afterlife any enemy that we knocked into the air.

The Argonauts move about the ancient world on board the Argo, the legendary ship constructed by the master shipwright Argus. Much like the Ebon Hawk in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the Argo serves as headquarters for Jason. There, he can converse with any of the many passengers he'll pick up along the way, chat with his fellow Argonauts, pray to a statue of Alceme, or dedicate his deeds to the gods in the ship's shrine for bonus experience points. Deeds include decapitating five enemies in a row, so dedicate accordingly.

The final few minutes of our demo were spent on Kythra, a once-sacred island that was home to the Golden Fleece. No longer. After Medusa defiled the shrine to the goddess Athena, Athena simply petrified the entire island, populous and all. Take that, heretics. Medusa, of course, was transformed from a sexy high priestess into a gigantic serpent creature. After a few minutes of threatening banter, Jason attacked, slicing off her giant tentacles as they wrapped around the pillars of the temple. And then with a quick push of the pause button, Liquid unceremoniously cut short the demo before Jason could carve out the heart of Medusa and present it to Athena. Still, we loved learning that Jason will pass judgment on the many petrified citizens of Kythra, deciding whether they will live or die, once unpetrified, of course.

Our time with Rise of the Argonauts was short but was most definitely sweet. Action fans looking for more depth from their hack-and-slash heroes, and RPG fans tired of turn-based combat and hit points, should enjoy the blend of action and role-playing that is Rise of the Argonauts. Prepare to set sail on the Argo this fall.

Well Greek Mythology has so many characters and so many stories, I see no issue with bringing in many of the populars into one game or games. No actual person or company owns Greek Mythology, so it is fair game, but the story tellers should try to keep the game stories close to what has been written, not to the T, but close.

I'm with arikkot Alot of games have 'factual' roots which aren't followed for exactly the reasons he states. e.g. the Total War series are based on actual events not just myths and don't force you to do exactly what happened in history. Games are games and are fictional entities in their own right, so I don't see what is wrong with them twisting stories etc

Daeimon Do you have any idea how hard it is to make a game based exactly on a greek myth with no changing the story? Of course they're going to change the story, maybe a lot, if that's what they have to do to make a compelling game. I suppose you're going to tell me that the God of War series is bad because it doesn't get the Greek mythology right? You need to start focusing less on the fact and more on the fun, or you'll be missing out on a lot of good games. I personally wouldn't want to play a game with a story that I already completely know, anyway. So please, just relax and take the game for what it is.

Daeimon: Charlie Price said that these Argonauts aren't actually Argonauts, but they are the characters everybody wants to fight with.

The game is not supposed to be an exact retelling of the myth, Daeimon. The developers have said it should inspire people to read up on the actual stories. And as far as your information on Achilles goes, Peleus, Laertes, and Telemon (fathers of the Trojan War heroes,)I believe are all Argonauts. The Argonautica takes place before the Trojan War, making Achilles either not born yet, or alive. Not dead. God of War screws up the stories as well, but it is still fun. We can only hope Rise of the Argonauts will be fun as well.

Yeah...and the fact that this game is basically taking a dump on the myth of Jason and the Argonauts doesn't bother anyone? Like, how Jason went on the quest for the Golden Fleece when his Uncle ruled the throne, and had to bring it back to become king. Or, how his 'wife' in this game, is actually the mortal mother of Hercules who had sex with Zeus to conceive Hercules...or the fact Achilles is probably dead by this time, and even if he isn't, he was not an Argonaut...and neither was Pan, who is like, a Faun, Satyr thingy. I could go on, but, I'm just gonna get flamed for knowing and acknowledging more Mythology than this company...it's ok to make a game based off a Myth...just get the myth right.

This game Looks cool and has some potential with the whole greek mythology genre, but to me, the dissapointment is the fact that you can not create your own character, and have to play a premade one which is the bummer..

I agree with PieCrusher. I think the combat sounds great! the more realistic the better for me, requires more 'on your toes' action. Bring this game on. Hope it has some kick ass multiplayer going on too :)

I like how they made the combat more life like. As far as in most games how you can hit somthing 20 times with a sword and it still hasn't died.

Just another game that you have to be patient and hold the rush to curse its creators. I am really tired seeing every smart ass take anyones mythology and turn it to whatever he likes just to sell gore and sex. Just wandering, there was a time that there were some original games, not cheap copycats... why do they seem so distant?

Merlanni: I like games that make you think, use dice and have manuals that look like a phonebook. I also like mindless FUN games as well. What's so bad about shutting your brain off and enjoying a good game? Please tell me you're not being a fanboy and knocking it just because it doesn't cater to your specific, narrow tastes. And please tell me your not knocking us for not liking the same games as you

This sound like so much fun. There can never be enough gore in a game and the ability to fight and kill just like in real life ( or death) makes this one stunning game. It's a must get for all hack and slash fans!

So I guess this is not the same Jason that had his girl friend, Medea, did most of the work and then marries someone else? I wonder how the storyline will turn out.

People claiming this is a knock off of GoW need to realize something...GoW is a knock off of Jason and the Argonauts. Greek mythology has been around way before God of War came to the Playstation lol...silly kids.

ldonyo: This is a role playing game, you're playing the role of someone else in a fixed storyline. Role. Playing :3 This does sound like God of War, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, since that game was a top notch game in and of itself. Add some more gore and different play elements and this might be one of the better games to come out.

Would have been nice if the game was a little less "idiot 14 year old boy" oriented and followed the actual story of Jason and the Argonauts a little more closely, but hey, this is better than nothing.

I got a feeling “Argonauts” is a cross breed between God of War and Diablo which I think will be interesting. Imaging fighting like hell and got a change to up-grade your weapons and armors . Looking forward for its launch.

did anyone notice, that for a game claiming to use greek mythology, that athena is rather unarmoured. according to homer, athen wore heavy bronze armor, had a large spear, and a large, round shield. (at least that is what my translation of the odyssey says). ooh, sex sells right, no one would want to buy a game where all the women were properly clothed.

This isn't a role-playing game by any stretch of the imagination, it's an action game. Stat-building does not make a game a role-playing game. Having clarified that, it sounds intriguing, as long as the combat is not of the carpal-tunnel-syndrome-inducing variety.

Looks to be a fun game, but considering some of the content it's doubtful we will see it in Australia. The video interview stated that the characters would display battle damage. Similar battle damage had to be cut from GTA4 (among other things) in order for us to get it.
