E3 2011: Nintendo stock sinks post-Wii U unveil

@1588greatdane I never said every console sucks, I stated honest truths about them. Sony had the PSN offline for a month and a half, Kinect doesnt have any serious games for it and doesnt do near what we were promised it would. But if you checked my profile instead of just calling me a "PC guy" you would see I review games from every console and own every console. Think before you speak, you might look stupid =P

@ash162 Did you saw the bird demo Nintendo showed of the WiiU? That demo is at most Xbox360 level pal, there's even a report here on GS somewhere saying exactly that. The controller is similar to the PSV? LOL just look at that tablet, it's f*cking BIG and UGLY, I bet you anything the scree resolution is even slower then the PSV. And knowing Nintendo, they will release this thing @ 400$ just for the new gimmicks... well Ninty, good luck with this console, sincerely, because me and a couple of friends not buying it.

i don't own a wii and i think motion gaming is a gimmick. But the wii-u could work out 'coz of two reasons: - its hd just like the ps3 and the x-box. There might be a difference in quality( as is the case that most third party games look better on the 360) but the devs wont be held back. - the wii-u controller is pretty similar to the ps vita so if the devs create games for that they might go for the wii-u as well. Not to mention the handheld is hd too! Now all is required for N is to price it right. And maybe for a while it will be fine until the next-gen comes knocking.

@grbolivar I disagree with that. I am a gamer and I have had a Wii for years. I actually balance playing between Wii and PC with a little Xbox on the side(just due to lack of games atm). And quite a few of my friends who are gamers own a Wii. There were actually quite a few games geared towards gamers such as Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, Monster Hunter Tri, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Call of Duty, ect. The problem was that people saw the Wii as a non-gamer's or casual gamer's console when it actually had some pretty good hardcore games. Mainly, this is because of all the crappy shovelware games that pretty much washed out the good stuff.

....and Nintendo did a very good job convincing non-gamers that you need a home console as you need a TV and a Stereo, just like that, and that's some remarkable marketing Nintendo did there. But with the Wii U... I don't know, I don't think the same idea of "you need this console to complete your home entertainment" will work here.

The Wii sold a lot because non-gamers were the only ones buying it, the real gamers (people that like gaming no matter the genre) are buying real gaming consoles like Xbox360 & PS3. Most of my friends with Wiis are absolute non-gamers with the Wii collecting dust next to the TV. They rarely use it and only to play stupid games like Wii Sport when they hold a party on their houses...

@montblanc512 I know what I said was far from reality but it was sort of based on the same argument as your comment. I've had every Nintendo console, and I loved the N64 and Gamecube, which were both surprisingly bad on sales. Then the Wii comes out and not only is there a lack of Nintendo games but there are next to no decent third party games. So all we're left with is a whole load of games where you have to wave your arms up and down or pretend to dance. Your comment on my idea about how we'd only be getting one Nintendo game a year, at least that would be more than what we've got from the Wii, I purchased the console on release, apart from playing Wii sports (because it was boxed with the console,) Zelda (which should've been a Gamecube game) and Mario Galaxy the console has sat gathering dust, 3 games in 5 years, that's a little pathetic. As I've already said, I know my original comment was lame, but I was touching on the fact that Nintendo need to concentrate more on trying to release the quality games that have helped build their name.

I just hope it doesn't happen as it did on the Wii: 3rd parties not being able to use properly the technology, ending up ruining the very same console life cycle with ugly games

People look up something called eyefinity. Thats a better example of multiple monitor gaming.

@x7c8r9, it can't be. Nintendo knows it wouldn't sell. Besides, nintendo's style is more to offer a cheap system, and then ruin you with it's required extras (Seriously, Wiimote: $40, Nunchuck $20, Wiimote plus $20, and that's not including the tablet for the drawing games, and the fitness board, and the zapper. Think about that, just four controllers to play most games is $320+$250 for the console. To get the most out of the Wii, it only costs about $20 less than the PS3 Starting price for the better model, and lets face it, you can't play jack without the nunchuck, smash is the only non-nunchuck game worth playing )

@cptpeg, I'm a big Ninty fan, and even I think that was the worst idea I've ever heard. Then we'd get one game a year, and half would be the same. What we need is third party developers who don't consider the Wii U as just a toy and make nothing but shovelware. I agree with markiewicz in that regard. I was excited about the Wii U though, and it's possibilities, but I was interested in what the wii could do too, which nobody ever decided to utilize the right way. I also despite my history of ninty love, have lost faith in Nintendo. I think Wii U will be good, but I also know that I'm not paying more than $300 for the thing, and if the controllers are expensive may not get it at all. For the same reason I didn't get a PS3, I'm not rich, and though I love gaming, it's not worth two paychecks for the system alone. So unless this thing comes out with some awesome games out of the gate, including third party stuff, I just can't trust Ninty with my money. Especially seeing how little return I'm seeing for investing in a Wii. Yay, a Kirby game and skyward sword, that'll keep me going for a year and a half (that's sarcasm in case it was missed), Seriously, even if Skyward Sword is the greatest game I've ever played, it doesn't change the fact Sony and MS have games coming out all the time that look good, and nintendo just abandoned us for like two years.

well hopefully it won't be as expensive as the PS3 at it's launch.

@ ctpeg no it's a terrible idea.... for the love of God... I know they can make great games from a gameplay standpoint. But I really want to see people who make Zelda games to create a new game, a new franchise. Imagine if people working for From Software worked for Nintendo instead. Would they have made Demon's Souls? No, most likely they would just create Zelda 27 and even though the game itself might be great from a technical POV and extremely well put together, I'm just fed up with Link, Mario and all the rest of the cast. I'm not really interested in what Nintendo does, but what little interest I have in their consoles (mostly the DS) is thanks to the 3rd party developers willing to bring NEW experiences. I had very low expectations for N during this E3, but they managed to be underwhelming nevertheless. What you just wrote would be a final nail in the coffin. The people who bought the Wii are either casual gamers or hardcore N fans who don't mind buying the 28th Mario game. There are exceptions, as always when you talk about a 70-80 million user base, but imho this is the tendency. And frankly I haven't seen any real will to change that.

We get it Nintendo, you want to make video games for our parents and sisters. Seeing as how I live alone and have my own television I very rarely experience the problem of having to share my TV. Gaming is usually done alone, and as much as i'd like to bring all my friends together to flail our arms about my living room like buffoons, most of us would rather get drunk at some dingy nightclub. It's a cool piece of technology, no doubt, but more of a step sideways than a step forward.

I love Nintendo but all the third party crap that's been released recently is making them look a little pathetic. I would love to see Nintendo hire a load of staff and go completely first party with their console, only release games made by Nintendo. Think of how many series they have at the moment: Mario (including kart, party, tennis,etc.) Zelda Luigi's Manson Animal Crossing WarioWare Metroid Kirby Fire Emblem Pokemon Earthbound Nintendogs Starfox Donkey Kong Pikmin Ice Climbers Kid Icarus Wii Fit Wii Sports F-Zero Super Smash Bros It would ensure nothing but quality games are released and with the extra staff they could start developing new characters and games. I know it wouldn't happen but it'd be cool.

@ elancion I hope you're right about third party support. We've heard it before and been dissapointed. I hope Nintendo makes more games for their own system this time around. Mario games were fine but Metroid only had Prime 3 and I don't even wanna mention Other M. I'm really getting sick of only one Zelda per major console. I only have 5 games that I play on Wii, not enough for a console to be considered a good investment. All in all, I really hope you're right about third party support. Either way this will be a wait and see for me. Definitely not a launch day purchase.

The main reason i think the stock sinks was because, they probably see this as an enhance Wii and just like the wii this will start out hot (maybe not as hot, because of price point) and fade maybe faster because if this thing launches 2012 and next xbox/ps3 launches late 2013 or early 2014, then this system will start to tank quicker than wii being way more inferior than next gen stuff from Microsoft/Sony etc. Also please don't buy into Nintendo's bull about being more Hardcore or third party friendly, yes third party will be there on day one (just to make launch money) but most will jump ship again because the system is too unique and most people will ignore there software and mostly buy Nintendo stuff.

it all boils down to the games more specifically the exclusive titles. im sure the wii u will be getting alot more 3rd party support due to it being able to support HD graphics etc. not to mention the new tech this system houses. Nintendo has always been a company that allows/encouraged Creativity or creative ideas to Flourish. so imagine what these 3rd party developers will be able to come up with without having to be concerned with restraints of producing yet another typical fps or game sequel. sure you'll have ur mult-platform titles but just think about the number of unique titles that these 3rd party developers can come up with for both the hardcore and casual gamer alike.if this happens then Nintendo will be the king of EXCLUSIVES. unlike the kinect or move, wii-u controllers also successfully function as a game pad and not just like a motion device. you get the BEST of both worlds.

The hardcore Nintendo fans will pay the asking price, $250, $300 or else... but the majority will not pay that kind of money for a console that does the same than current gen consoles do--and for less money! WiiU as cool as it is as a gadget, leaves a lot of questions and concerns... mine? Do I want to hold that mini-TV/Tablet for more than one hour while playing my favorite game in my living room?

If I'm not mistaken weren't people scared of the Wii as well

@elancion The two aren't even comparable man. Microsoft is such a huge corporation that their gaming and entertainment divisions make up such a small percentage of it that it hardly makes a difference or an impact on their stock. Either way, I wouldn't look too deeply into Nintendo's stock dropping ~5%, plenty of stocks are doing just the same right now, it's been a tough last 2 weeks.

@ elancion Microsoft isn't just a gaming company. There are many things effecting that stock. Nintendo has taken another giant risk and predictions are that like the 3DS, this is just abother gimmick. The 3DS sales are dropping and the reaction to this is more "WTF!?!" then anything else. Can you really blame stockholders for jumping ship. It's another console that gears more towards non gamers.

nintendo is just getting crazy now. the wii u looks to be very expensive. and that controller is just plain HUGE. why not just make the 3DS the controller? I'm interested to see what happens, but I dont see how it will be much better than the Wii (which is collecting dust at an alarming pace world-wide)

You can bet it will be over $250, obviously I want it to be below that, but as others have pointed out, I think it will be around $400. The controller alone is gonna be fairly expensive.

I am excited about it. Too bad investors aren't :( This move seems to be going back to more gaming roots rather than gimmicks to me. Having a real controller in my hands will be great. No more waggle fest.

I do not like it, big Nintendo fan but most Wii games just sucks for me, The motion most of the time make me hate the good games as well... And this Ipod look thing is just too big and kinda overprice... :(

@brian419 Even though I feel you, that's how most people felt about the Wii and that sold like gang busters. I didn't like the Wii and hated on it, but when I got it for the family, we had lots of fun. I'll get the Wii U for the fam and the Vita for me. Uncharted and LBP on the go? FTW! But I can see the fun with the Wii U. Only time will tell.

Personally I doubt I'm gonna buy the Wii U, as I have a 360, a PS3, and a Wii, using both my PS3 and Xbox regularly, and well, leaving my Wii to collect dust. This said however, when the Wii first came out, I was a lot younger and had no-where near the game dedication I have now at age 16. The Wii was a gimmick back then, and when it was released I was dying to have it! But the Wii is now old technology. The kids that were bought a Wii back then have now moved on to more Hardcore gaming, but what about the younger kids that are the age I was back then? Sure most 10 year olds will have a PS3 or an Xbox, but it's the mass population of people that aren't hardcore gamers that will be buying the Wii U. If you look at the people representing this website, they are pretty much all hardcore gamers looking forward to an announcement that Nintendo is moving back toward a more Video Game based console than a Family Fun console. We're all dissapointed with their release of the Wii U, which quite frankly is a pathetic competitor in the ancestry of Nintendo gaming, but we only make a tiny part of the overall population, and I must say, from what I've heard, most the people I know that aren't "game-wise" will be looking forward to the release, and most likely to buy it. Nintendo has been taking a bold strategy aiming for an audience mainly composed of people that aren't renowned for their video game playing, but who knows.. Maybe it could work.

The Wii was an epic failure in terms of games. It sold well because it had the whole "You can't find one" mentality behind it which made everyone want one. There was one good Zelda game One good Metroid game and of course their main focus on Mario. This new system is the same thing, focusing on non gamers. The graphics will be outdone in 2 years. Is Nintendo gonna come out with a new one in 2 years to compete. I used to be a Nintendo fan but this is a joke.

You know I read all these posts and I see a lot of ppl that are quick to go off on nintendo's ideas but seriously.... The wii name was crazy and turned out fine... The system is pretty good besides lower graphics... Everyone wasn't sure if the wii was going to kick off also so before everyone goes off on the wiiU... Give the damn system a chance and try it out... Then voice your opinions on how crappy it is or isn't lol but at the time just try to look at what you can possibly do with it and what the graphics will be like...

Nothing about this console says I need to have it. Especially since I have PS3 & 360. I'm more excited for PS Vita & will buy one at launch. I may change my mind when I can actually play Wii U but I'm sure this thing will be at least $300. Don't have to have one that bad.

I think it'll cost $350 - $400 when it launches. That controller alone has to be $100-$150 by itself. The only question I have is will the original Wii games play on it and are the old controllers compatible with the Wii U? i have no plans to buy this immediately. Going to wait it out. Same thing with the PSVita. Wait and see how it does and what games come out for it.

@volcomstoner180 you are very right! who wants to play Battlefield 3 next year and the system is only a little bit more powerful then current generations so by next year when we here of new sony and mircrosoft system coming soon that hardware will be much stronger.And like i said KINECT is the next generation in motion control.

theres no way this will have the sucess of the wii, so i dont blame them and plus....they are releasing this years games on it..next holiday season...who wants to buy them then?

I think most stock brokers think very short term, and when you think about Nintendo's short term, there are not good things going on. 3DS is under-performing by sales numbers. The Wii is now selling either 2nd or 3rd, and that is AFTER another price drop, which also would imply decreased profits (lower price = lower profits). Add to these facts the E3 show where almost nothing was said about the Wii, but instead the Wii U, which is still over a year away? Heck, if I had Nintendo stock, I'd sell it now and pick it back up in a year. No brainer.

I can't blame them, I can't see this one taking off the way the Wii did.

@JakeAUS I have to agree on the name being a poor choice. If Nintendo wants consumers to believe this is new hardware than why brand it as something that sounds like a Wii exntension? I never did care for the name "Wii" to begin with; it sounds childish and in some ways probably contributed to its isolation with hardcore gamers. "WiiU" just continues that trend. I love the company for all the memories it gave me as a child but sometimes I wonder about their philosophy. Maybe in Japan this works with players that have grown up with the system. But in my opinion, older US gamers need more than new peripherals to remain loyal to a brand. The gameplay needs to reflect the needs of the age cohort and this is where Nintendo has fizzled for quite sometime.

I doubt this console will impress many core gamers, and I think it will scare off a large portion of the casual gamers which liked the simplicity of the Wii, and whilst the Wii U might in fact be simple, for the casual gamer it wont necessarily appear that way visually. Which, lets face it, is a dominant factor in convincing casual gamers to purchase since they don't usually know all the facts, they just think it looks fun/cheap/simple. Not to mention the name, I mean just.. why. I'd be embarrassed to even ask for it at the shop. I really thought Nintendo had a chance with their new console, and whilst I think the technology is fantastic, I think the execution could have been far better, and I also think it needed to be released this year, not next. I'll probably get a bunch of people disagreeing, but I don't believe the Wii U will be as successful as they had hoped, I think it will be far less successful than it's predecessor, and that both the Xbox and Playstation will continue to move further ahead by slowly bringing in casual gamers to add to their large core gamer playerbase.

Now all we need is for someone from Sony to laugh at Nintendo right before incorporating this technology into the Playstation 4.

Ah... the vagary of being publicly traded: fickle investors who would take no announcement other than "we are making money!".

There's just no way this thing will succeed. The controller is too complicated. People will see that huge LED screen on there and go WTF? The Wii was popular because the controller looked like a remote and not a PSP. Don't think just because they slap the Wii logo the thing will sell. The PS3 is a huge failure compared to the PS2.

I love how comments on the controller by those that are clearly not at E3 contradict those of the people who have actually held the damn thing. Instead of watching all the pretty movies, read - it really does help with the full picture.
