E3 2011: Two Worlds II: Pirates of the Flying Fortress Preview Impressions

We get our first look at this upcoming expansion to Two Worlds II.

There's no such thing as too much of a good thing. Two Worlds II was an absolutely gigantic game, jam-packed with elaborate quests, interesting characters, and more spells than you could possibly comprehend. And for those craving even more content (how greedy!), an expansion is on the way that promises to add enough quests to last another 10 hours and a full complement of other tweaks and additions to refine your overall experience. We had a chance to get a first look at Pirates of the Flying Fortress in a hands-off demo earlier today.

Flying Fortress begins immediately after the events that concluded the previous game. You find your character on a beach, pointing a sword at a foe shaking on his knees. The poor sap begs for you to spare his life, but that's the coward's way of handling conflicts. You plunge your pointy killing device through his chest and then say, "Die." Seconds later, your moment of victory evaporates. Those dirty pirates double-cross you, hitting you in the back of the head and taking you on board their pirate ship.

Story details beyond that setup are sparse now, but we did find out a bit about changes to the basic structure. First, your boat plays a much bigger role than in the main game. Before, there was no marker on the map to help you locate your lost skiff, and it was difficult to find a place to dock when you were on board. Now? A blip guides you in the right direction when you're separated, and you can crash into just about any beach to take to shore. In other traveling news, your horse has its own armor. No more arrows bouncing off its hide!

Three hundred spells come precrafted in this expansion, making magic much easier to use for the uncreative players. Also, there are new hair and facial options if you want to tweak the physical features of the protagonist. And the last detail: there is a quest in the graveyard given to you by an undead monster. If zombie strippers are your thing, Flying Fortress has you covered.

Two Worlds II: Pirates of the Flying Fortress is due for release sometime this fall. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more information on this promising-looking add-on.

@basketcaseNZ The large island to the north is the one that is used during the MP adventure, though I would have really preferred it to be a part of the SP since the MP acts are pretty linear.

I enjoyed TW 2 and wanted to keep playing when I finished so I will most likely get the expansion, but I agree with ronnet. The game goes downhill from the start in terms of content and exploration instead of building up. When I got to the end of the game I still hadn't explored the largest island so I assumed this wasn't yet the end, that there must be at least another chapter to go. Then it ended and I'm like "What? That can't be it!" I still can't believe they put that huge region in the game then made it inaccessible. Ten hours doesn't actually seem that long to me. But I'll probably manage to eek it out quite a bit more. Personally I'm hoping the dungeons won't be such a bore, and for some new light armour and finally a katana that actually looks like a katana, is the correct size for a katana, and is called a katana.

@rasputin177, have you finished TW2? It seems huge at first when you get to explore the southern island. Everytime you access the map you see that even bigger island to the north. At some point you get tired of the repetitive desert theme of the southern island. When you finally get to leave the game starts to disappoint. First you'll another small theme island which felt repetitive to me. But the worst part si that the northern island turns out to be inaccesible for the most part. Once you leave the south island you think you have only done 40% of the game while in fact you are already at 85%. So unless you haven't finished the game I don;t see how you could call this one huge. It is slightly smaller (albeit better) then the original and seems small compaired with actual big games such as Oblivion.

A few games lately mentioning pirate content. I really don't like pirates at all really so hoping this trend soon dies so I get content I want.

This game has been much much better then I expected. So much to do, explore, create and clobber. The graphics and dungeon designs are also much better then other games in the genre. With this expansion this will be one of the biggest games I have ever played.

Also I hope your boat as oars, it was a pain to wait for the wind to be in the right direction. I wonder if they are going to officially unlock the big island so we don't have to use the mod. Its such a great series i'll be buying it no matter what.
