The version of Assassin's Creed Unity that Ubisoft plans to ship on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this October "can't be done" on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, the publisher told GameSpot this week at E3. Asked if a version of the game might be released on last-gen consoles, Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key said, "No, no. Assassin's Creed Unity is a next-gen game."
"It's built for next-gen; it can't be done on current-gen, at least we haven't figured out how and we're not trying to" -- Tony Key
"It's built for next-gen; it can't be done on current-gen, at least we haven't figured out how and we're not trying to," Key said. He pointed out that Assassin's Creed Unity is one of the only major multiplatform games coming exclusively to next-generation consoles this year.
Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt were supposed to launch this year, but they were both delayed into 2015 for further polishing. Key said he's especially proud of the development teams working on Assassin's Creed Unity for their ability to overcome the challenges that new hardware and new development toolsets can create.
Though Assassin's Creed Unity is coming only to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, it's been rumored that another game--Assassin's Creed Comet--is in development for Xbox 360 and PS3. We asked Key directly if there would be a new Assassin's Creed game for those platforms this year, but he wouldn't budge.
"Yeah, there's plenty of current-gen Assassin's Creed fans out there. We hope to be able to talk to them about that soon," Key said.
Assassin's Creed Unity is set during the French Revolution and features a new hero named Arno. Ubisoft has recently found itself in a bit of hot water over Assassin's Creed Unity's lack of playable female characters.
