During Sony's E3 press conference on Monday, it was noted that Far Cry 4 players would be able to play the game's new co-op mode with PlayStation owners who don't have a copy of the game. Details on how this works have since surfaced and, as you'd expect, there are some caveats.
In order to share the game, you'll need to be playing it on either PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 and have a PlayStation Plus subscription, Ubisoft has revealed to GameSpot. If you meet those requirements, you'll be given ten invitations that can be sent out to PlayStation Network friends to play "a free trial of online co-op with you. Explore Kyrat together, capture outposts, gain money and experience, and create your own stories with a friend."
"The way we built it was we wanted to make sure to protect the autonomy of the single-player experience." -- Far Cry 4 executive producer Dan Hay
Neither Sony nor Ubisoft has specified the exact limits on what this "trial" encompasses, but we did get some sense of that from executive producer Dan Hay. When discussing the feature on GameSpot's E3 stage show, he said, "We're going to be generous. We want you to basically download the game, jump in your buddy's game, play as Hurk, play for a couple hours, run around, experience the entirety of the world, take over some outposts, take over some fortress, understand what it's like to be able to wingsuit, to be able to climb on top of the elephants, to be able to get a whole bunch of new vehicles and weapons, and effectively play the game."
Pressed for a sense of just how much you'll be able to play this way, Hay said, "You're going to get a very large taste."
For those who are more concerned with what this means for the single-player experience, Hay offered some reassurance on that front. "The way we built it was we wanted to make sure to protect the autonomy of the single-player experience," he said. "So if you're a single-player person and you want to be able to have fun, you can do that. But at any given time, you're going to be able to invite your buddy in, you'll be able to play in the open world."
Far Cry 4 is scheduled for release on November 18 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. For more on the game, check out our impressions of riding on an elephant and piloting a gyrocopter, both of which you can do in Far Cry 4.
