E3 2014: The Legend of Zelda Is Reborn on Wii U

Power. Wisdom. Courage.

Nintendo has finally announced what a lot of us have been waiting for: a brand-new Zelda game on the Wii U. The presentation focused on the scale of Hyrule, which is significantly grander than it has ever been before. Of course, we also got to see a new version of Link, who's curiously without his familiar green tunic. Of course, it was an impressive show of the capabilities of the Wii U, but the most important message is that the next Legend of Zelda will be returning to the series' roots.

Many Zelda fans have bemoaned the series' familiar and rigid structure of late, where Link must travel through a series of dungeons in a strict fashion. Link's next adventure won't follow this pattern, and you'll get to explore the entirety of Hyrule from the start. For the first time in a very long time, The Legend of Zelda is embracing open-world design. In many people's eyes, this is how Link's adventures were always meant to unfold. After all, the original Legend of Zelda was inspired by the childlike sense of wonder that comes from exploring the wilderness, but that game is perhaps the only one in the series that truly captured what it meant to be an explorer. Curiosity led you down a path, and fear of the unknown tested your courage, and with the wisdom to understand your abilities and limitations, you could survive long enough to see every corner of Hyrule's beautiful, brutal world. This is the Hyrule that started it all, and we're finally going to get a chance to go back.

And what a world it is. Hyrule has never appeared as vast, lush, or varied as it did in today's reveal. When the camera opens on Link, he's overlooking an expansive vista filled with rolling hills, wildlife, streams, mountains, and even a familiar-looking volcano. In the foreground, tall dense patches of grass sway in the wind. It's a beautiful world, and one that is seemingly full of possibilities.

The original Legend of Zelda gave you the freedom to explore Hyrule however you wished, but in turn, you would be at the mercy of enemies, from common weaklings to powerful beasts, at any moment. Today, we caught a glimpse of a complex, colorful, and powerful enemy that chases Link and hurls fireballs at our hero, razing the land in a blaze of fire. At first, Link is shrouded in a cloak, but after he tosses it aside, we see a new Link, without his familiar green tunic, armed with a bow and magical arrows. It was an exciting, colorful encounter that encapsulated the best of Link's courage and abilities.

An open Hyrule is an incredible promise, especially when it looks so rich and vibrant, and the new Link is an exciting evolution of a hero that has been growing, and changing, for nearly 30 years. If Nintendo can deliver on its promise, fans of the Zelda series won't need to worry about the future of console-size Zelda games. It might even end up being the killer Wii U title that everyone has been waiting for.

besides hoping the camera will be 100% turn/moveable .. and invertable..

hope the game's soundtrack will rival the epical soundtrack of OoT or TP... (SS soundrack was ok, but not epical)... and hope the new Zelda will have similar epical atmospherical parts like in TP's parallel world ...

... glade it will have a "Skyrim-ish" openworld free roaming feeling..., an "overworld/roaming" feeling was missing in SS.... (and think its cool, that they chose cell shading.. wich they should have used in SS already..)

Skyward Sword didn't need to be cel shaded, that game was goreous and if you can't see that you're blind. Also, you forgot about Windwaker's breathtaking soundtrack.

Thank you Nintendo!

Finally doing what 3d games should be, open worlds to explore. Unlike the vast majority of games that are linear (Call of Duty being the biggest offender) they might as well be 2d games.

one last thing, besides that it should have a 100% free turn/moveable camera, you should be able to invert the axsis...

(it looks sooooo gorgeous..., but if you can move/ turn/tilt the camera freely ..and not invert it, it would spoil the game for many..)

Let me guess...2015?

It's almost as if these companies all got together and decided to have E3 2015 early.

Yeah, but this game was always going to come out in 2015 or later, it wasn't delayed like other games.

You were always able to explore all of Hyrule. It's just certain places locked you out if you didn't have the right item yet. This is something the new game will have to address still. ALBW dealt with it by letting you rent all the items early on. This meant that almost all of the collectibles were accessible the moment you were allowed to rent, and if you got them all ASAP you'd find the dungeons much easier.

The new Zelda could do something akin to item rental, otherwise it will have to find another way to not lock you out of the world.

Awesome. I can't wait. I just hope it isn't controlled with the motion controller again. Skyward Sword was the only Zelda game I couldn't play because of that gimmick.

@MADDjoe Same. Skyward is the only Zelda I've skipped since I was a kid (NES).

I don't think it will have any motion controls. They will use the tablet controller this time. It will be the shining example of how to use that controller.

I feel like Nintendo is slowly trying to do away with the tunic. This guy looks like Link in Wind Waker when you play for the second time.

I just came here to say did you notice the volcano in the background? I wanna ride my horse there. In fact it would be awesome if this game took everything from the best worlds. Give me that bird from Skyward Sword, the ship from Wind waker so that I can visit islands and Epona for everything else. I hope there will be islands that we can go to.

Dude, it's fake, Wii U cannot handle that kind of intense graphic overlay. And that whole cinamatic sequence was probably CGI. I mean the concept is nice, but lets face it, its just a 'cutesy' version of watered down Skyrim, enough.

Sounds like you are just jelious. Considering how good skyward sword looked on wii and it had terrible hardware I have no doubt this game isn't fake at all and just wait tell it comes out and you will think of something els to complain about

it does almost look too good to be true... (just hope the camera is 100% free turn/moveable with such gorgeous landscapes...like in OoT.. and with an "invertable" axs)

watered down Skyrim?.. think it will have the more epical things to find, explore.. ,. Skyrim was too big, that it started to reapeat certain build ups.., the new Zelda's areas, contructions ect. will all be very indiviual (from the build up and art design)

it does almost look too good to be true... the (interactiv) area is either smaller than it seems, or it has a special loading (texture) trick.... or the camera is not trully 100% free turn/moveable camera....

(just hope, it will really feel like what it's trying to suggest here.., incl. 100% free turn/moveable camera..)

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's probably still being worked on. They didn't want to overload e3 with three Zelda games, cannibalizing each other's attention.

Personally I'd rather they did a 3DS port of TP than MM.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They chose WW because it was easier to do. Its original style was already one that would age well. They didn't have to improve it too much to make it look stunning. TP would need to be a complete redo. It doesn't look too good right now. They'd need to increase the poly count (which they didn't have to do with WW) on all models, and redo all the textures.

WW HD was done in 6 months.

This would be a bigger project, even bigger than OOT 3D, which is still not quite a full remake. If you look at the graphics of OOT 3D, it doesn't look near as good as other 3DS games built from ground up, like Mario 3D Land, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Bravely Default and such. The stair cases in OOT 3D were still flat slopes, with the steps textured on.

TP in HD would need to do more than that. They'd probably have to redo almost all art assets. I'd still want them to do it, but I don't think they will.

@lostn All good points.

I suppose that it doesn't matter about a TP HD version anymore. Now that we've finally seen Zelda-U it's just a matter of time before we get to play this new Zelda so there's no need for another remake... although remakes are nice.

MM will hopefully end up on 3DS soon anyway.
