E3 2014: The Legend of Zelda Is Reborn on Wii U

Power. Wisdom. Courage.

Nintendo has finally announced what a lot of us have been waiting for: a brand-new Zelda game on the Wii U. The presentation focused on the scale of Hyrule, which is significantly grander than it has ever been before. Of course, we also got to see a new version of Link, who's curiously without his familiar green tunic. Of course, it was an impressive show of the capabilities of the Wii U, but the most important message is that the next Legend of Zelda will be returning to the series' roots.

Many Zelda fans have bemoaned the series' familiar and rigid structure of late, where Link must travel through a series of dungeons in a strict fashion. Link's next adventure won't follow this pattern, and you'll get to explore the entirety of Hyrule from the start. For the first time in a very long time, The Legend of Zelda is embracing open-world design. In many people's eyes, this is how Link's adventures were always meant to unfold. After all, the original Legend of Zelda was inspired by the childlike sense of wonder that comes from exploring the wilderness, but that game is perhaps the only one in the series that truly captured what it meant to be an explorer. Curiosity led you down a path, and fear of the unknown tested your courage, and with the wisdom to understand your abilities and limitations, you could survive long enough to see every corner of Hyrule's beautiful, brutal world. This is the Hyrule that started it all, and we're finally going to get a chance to go back.

And what a world it is. Hyrule has never appeared as vast, lush, or varied as it did in today's reveal. When the camera opens on Link, he's overlooking an expansive vista filled with rolling hills, wildlife, streams, mountains, and even a familiar-looking volcano. In the foreground, tall dense patches of grass sway in the wind. It's a beautiful world, and one that is seemingly full of possibilities.

The original Legend of Zelda gave you the freedom to explore Hyrule however you wished, but in turn, you would be at the mercy of enemies, from common weaklings to powerful beasts, at any moment. Today, we caught a glimpse of a complex, colorful, and powerful enemy that chases Link and hurls fireballs at our hero, razing the land in a blaze of fire. At first, Link is shrouded in a cloak, but after he tosses it aside, we see a new Link, without his familiar green tunic, armed with a bow and magical arrows. It was an exciting, colorful encounter that encapsulated the best of Link's courage and abilities.

An open Hyrule is an incredible promise, especially when it looks so rich and vibrant, and the new Link is an exciting evolution of a hero that has been growing, and changing, for nearly 30 years. If Nintendo can deliver on its promise, fans of the Zelda series won't need to worry about the future of console-size Zelda games. It might even end up being the killer Wii U title that everyone has been waiting for.

I'd also love, if you could ride Epona in the 1-person view (with typical "straf/move/look" controls..., kust love riding in Skyim and FFXIV like that, .. you can fully enjoy the landscapes and totally dive into the game)

and they had better not forget to add the option of "inverted axis" for the controls

we need a camera like in Zelda WW and TP (NGC) or like in any modern 3-person view game, where you can turn/tilt (and zoom) the camera freely.. to fully enjoy the "free roaming/exploring" feeling ..and to fully enjoy the landscapes too...

and not an halfbacked camera like in TP (Wii) and SS, where you could only turn the camera indirectly, when moving/turing Link...

(horror would be, if the camera would be fixed on one spot, like in the demo/trailer shown here..)

This game looks so awesome! I am not at all disappointed with its look, even though it's totally different from the Link/Gohma tralier shown at the reveal of the Wii U years ago. So excited about the new game's possibilities!!!

agree, it looks like what we were secertly hoping for.. (vast and beautiful landsacpes, a focus on an open world feeling and cell shading with a mature-ish looking Link..)

now just the camera has to be 100% turn/moveable (like in WW), and the soundtrack has to be epical like in OoT or TP.. (besides maybe some very amospheric parts like TP's parallel world..)

glad Nintendo decided to take Zelda in this direction....

wich cell shading, you can artisticly do so much more...., it really already looks gorgeous (sure, the "new Link" will take some getting used to... but its often like that with a style changes..)

going the direction FFXIII went with it's characters would have been fail..

@jemoedr

toony style?.. imo the new Crackdown (characters) looked more like toony stlye than this..

Zelda U 2015 looks more like painting/real art & animé hybrid..., looks gorgeous and Nintendo took the right choice of using cell shading.. .even it the new Links look might take a bit getting used too, but that's normal

(the whole game will possibly be one of the most beautifull art designs ever, which is thanx to cell shading, something the Final Fantasy Desinger should have used a long time ago.. besides others...., just hope Zelda U 2015 will have some intens atmospheric parts like the paralle worlds of TP, wich were like from another world.. well they were from a parallel world...lol..)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, it looks toony. Just look at the screen it shows before playing the movie. It's like it's drawn in a comic book.

The world looks beautifull and lively, but the characters look toony. At least Link (or whoever the person in this trailer is) does.

I agree with the Twilight Princess part. I'd love to see more like that. It's one of my favorite Zelda games, i just love the style.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Fair enough. However, I disagree with you. Just because it's cel-shaded doesn't make it look like Wind Waker. Cel-shading is the only similarity between the art direction they have shown thus far, and I don't think that immediately makes it look like Wind Waker.

I'm surprised you don't feel Wind Waker feels like a Zelda game. It's different, to be sure, but the core elements are still in place.

I should state that although l would have liked the Zelda to look more like it did in the original Zelda trailer shown when the Wii U was first announced (more in the Twilight Princess style, with Link battling Gohma), I am super pleased with the current look and style.

I'm not trying to convince you, or anything. I'm just sharing my thoughts and opinions.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not that apparent. I bet it's still Link, but perhaps Aonuma is pulling a fast one because he ins't considered Link until he dawns the traditional green tunic. Personally, I feel Link's clothes in the trailer were consistent with his regular clothes from the last three Zelda games (Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword).

This looks like it has the potential to be one of the best 3D Zelda games ever made. The question is, will it be able to surpass OoT. When they made Twilight Princess, they were trying really, really hard to make it better then OoT, but when it was finally released very few people thought it came anywhere close. I guess we'll have to see what happens.

I see it in a slightly different light. Twilight Princess did nearly everything OoT did. A few things it did even more competently. BUT that was the problem. Twilight Princess was almost a carbon copy of OoT. I'd been there and done that. When it comes to unique experiences the 2nd time (even if it's really good) is rarely as amazing as the first.

Here's hoping this latest Zelda brings a unique experience. Otherwise, it will become another in the long line of Zeldas living in Ocarina's shadow.

@disneyskate

even Zelda I (NES) did "this" too... but the thing is, Zelda SS totally failed in deleviering "this" feeling.. which even TP was alble to give us a bit. and Skyrim delieved like never felt so intens since OoT.. (even if was like in TP a "psuedo" openworld feeling.. but the "roaming/exploring" thru the vast landscpaces worked there, but like mentioned went missing in SS., while those looking for it again, found it in Skyrim.., it's nice, that Nintendo is back on track on how Zelda should be, ..after doing it wrong with SS..)

now they just need to add a free move/turnable camera like in WW and TP (NGC)..

and of course this will be compared with certain parts of Skyrim.. (since it's also obivous, that Nintendo too a closer look at Skyrim too...)

Nintendo always makes Link look different in each game, which is sweet. Right from the Zelda on NES up to now. Zelda rocks. Can't wait to play this. I'm getting a Wii-U 100%. Aw yeah.

I hope they'll show a little more at TGS.

First Zelda was being compare to Call of Duty ( don't know why -_-) and now because it's open world it is being compare to Skyrim, seriously you guys always find something to complain about. Try the game first to see if it sucks or not instead of being ignorant and saying it sucks before even trying it, that's what I do

Some people just don't like Zelda. Fine by me. They're allowed to like what they want.

That won't take away any of the awesomeness that Zelda fans will be experiencing when we get this game. LOL

Looks pretty cool and surprisingly piqued my interest with the style of it. However I do not like Link's new look or that outfit. Looks a little too anime for me. Still, gotta say, I wish it still looked like what was shown before. That's the Zelda I'm still going to hold out for. If this game looked like that, I'd have bought a Wii U for sure.

And the wait continues...

I know Link has always bene quite androgynous, but this time around, they seem to have gone to an extreme if that's actually a man.

Apparently the person in that trailer isn't link. And come on, the small frame, the thin neck, thick eyelashes? That's like game design 101 on female character design.

It could just be a case of Nintendo going extreme with the androgynous design, but i'd like to think Nintendo are dedicated to mixing up the formula for once.

I'm so excited for this! I don't care what anyone else says, I believe the bright and vivid art was the correct path for Zelda to take, if I wanted a dark/gritty/realistic game, I'd just play the dozens of other games that have the exact same art. Gets old, people. On another note, I really hope they don't do motion controls like Skyward Sword. I never even bought the game because of the motion controls. I don't really mind swinging the controller to swing the sword, but if they do implement it, I just hope there is a left-handed option. Also, Link shot his bow right-handed, I wish they would make him lefty again.

dark/gritty doesnt matter.. .. TP was epical not (only) because it was "dark", but because it's over atmosphere and effects (and soundtrack) in the parallel world... wich were "spacy", that it felt surreal like not many games could do..

When Wind Waker released on the Gamecube, I was lovin' that art style, too. So unique.

I was a little p*ssed earlier that there wasn't any gameplay footage, but now that it has sunken in (that the wait to see anything from Zelda-U is over), I don't mind the wait at all. Keep it up, Nintendo.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with the art direction as well. Zelda always offered the colorful anime styled palette. It's one of the things that keeps the adventure's innocence. EVERYTHING else is very dark and grim, which I enjoy, but Zelda, however, is supposed capture that feeling you had as a kid going on a adventure in your backyard or the woods nearby by your house. But Zelda also contains those quietly eerie moments in certain parts of the game. They have a certain unsettling mystery without going for an easy shock factor. Needless to say I can't wait to experience that again!

Why? Why go to Nintendo for dark and grim? Go somewhere else. There's nothing so special about Zelda's characters to make it more special than other, darker adventure games.

@disneyskate Another time perhaps, but what with Shadows of Mordor, Witcher 3 and Dragon Age coming out they need to do something unique and quintessentially Nintendo.

And this is frankly gorgeous. I just hope this is what it will really look like.
