E3 2015: In Fallout 4, You Can't Kill Your Dog
If this was Skyrim, the dog would be accidentally shouted off a cliff.
When Fallout 4 was announced, fans immediately speculated as to what would be the fate of the main character's dog. Although many people took to the dog and loved the idea of having a canine companion, they feared that he would have a depressing fate.
Fans can rest easy: Dogmeat, your dog companion, cannot die. Fallout director Todd Howard today clarified this in a panel at E3 2015, saying that your pup is not a mortal being.

However, this does not mean that you can throw Dogmeat into the worst situations and expect him to come through unscathed. Howard went on to explain that your dog can get seriously hurt. In fact, if Dogmeat receives enough of a beating, he can become incapacitated.
Thus, players should still be careful with their companion, but they need not worry too much. He'll stick around through anything.
