E3 2017: Metroid 2 Remake Samus Returns Coming To 3DS, Release Date And Special Edition Confirmed

Nintendo announces a second Metroid game at E3.

While Nintendo surprised fans with Metroid Prime 4 during its E3 press conference, it turns out it wasn't the only Metroid announcement it had for the show. During its post-conference Treehouse livestream, Metroid: Samus Returns was announced for 3DS.

As the name suggests, this is based on the classic game, Metroid II: Return of Samus. Rather than a straight port, this is described as a reimagining of that title, though it remains a 2D side-scrolling action/exploration game. In addition to improved visuals, it also features a new range of motion, allowing you to aim in any direction, and new abilities.

Samus Returns' release date is set for September 15. A special edition will be available that includes both the game itself and a CD with selections from the soundtrack. The game is in development at MercuryStream, the developer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. It previously denied reports that it had pitched a Metroid game for Wii U and 3DS.

Outside of Metroid, Nintendo today showed off more of Super Mario Odyssey and revealed that a new Pokemon RPG is in development for Switch. Check out our Nintendo press conference recap for all the news.

I hope this turns out to be great, although a few things like the counter attack moves remind me a little bit of Other M. Either way, I still need to play through AM2R and it appears to be amazing!

So... this is to Metroid II as Zero Mission is to the original Metroid.

It is funny that after the success of the fan made Metroid 2 remake which in my opinion is the best Metroid game ever done, Nintendo finally decided to do a remake of game that they have buried in the ground for 2 decades. AM2R brought this game back and did a job so good that Nintendo wants to cash in with a game that they thought had no value for them.

If anyone hear haven't heard of AM2R - Metroid 2 Remake a fan made remake of the old Metroid 2 the return of samus. Go play this game is that good and it was done 100 percent by a fan and Nintendo had nothing to do with it and with the making of this game.

@angrycreep: What the hell you're talking about? AMR2 got ceased because its basically the same game that Nintendo was remaking in the first place. To see this being free and have their game a full paid game only affects Nintendo more than the fan game. So AMR2 didn't bring this game to reality at all.

What it did do however is convincing Nintendo that there's still demand for Metroid which apparently seemed to work.

@Artwark: Why are you so ignorant? AM2R was in the making for 10 years and was finally release last year after 10 years in the making. The game was release before the take down and even though you can't find it in their main website anymore because of the take down the game can still be found and downloaded from a million other places all over the internet. The game was 100 percent release last year dude. So don't tell me that Nintendo ceased this game because they were remaking it. AM2R has been in the making for a really long time and they knew about it and never ceased or had any interested in stopping the game and mysteriously or of a sudden the game is release and they want to stop it. I guess Nintendo's remake version started because of AM2R and Nintendo were watching the progress and the interest that AM2R was generating through the years and they said this AM2R is getting a lot attention let's just go ahead and do our version and stop their version. It's been a long time since the last decent Metroid Nintendo. bunch of idiots.

@angrycreep: And how do you know that Nintendo was not making a Metroid game during those 10 years? Making games can take longer than 3 years. And even then by your logic, Metroid Fusion only came out after 8 years and yet Nintendo were trying to develop a Metroid game for the N64 and GBC but were scrapped. Are you saying that the fan game is what caused this game to happen? Because if so, newsflash, that did not happen. Soon we'll be getting interviews about the game and its very likely that they will reveal development began on so so year but got delayed for some good reason.

Respecting a fan made game for the official game to happen is insulting to Nintendo and the fan himself.

@Artwark: If they really would have been making a top notch Metroid they would have done it a long time ago and Dude Nintendo don't need you to find excuses for them and yes I don't believe they were making any Metroid during that time other than those crappy Metroid games they release not worth calling Metroid. The last time Nintendo put a team together to do a good Metroid was way back in 2007 with Metroid Prime 3 and nothing worth Calling Metroid after that. It has also been 14 years since the last top notch 2D metroid with metroid zero mission way back in 2004. They haven't had any interest in putting a good team to do a quality Metroid game in years and instead they have put together their best teams to do other franchises and not much love for Metroid.

@angrycreep: Except this interview says otherwise...

http://gonintendo.com/stories/282770-sakamoto-talks-more-on-metroid-samus-returns-dev-time-new-deta

So its not like they were delaying it but that they were trying to make it happen. Devs can't simply start making games unless they have the resources to do so.

@Artwark: I don't know exactly what you were trying to get out that link that you posted because that said nothing to me other that they started the development of this game 2 years ago which it proves my point even more about the fan made remake of the same game which started 10 years ago. Don't talk about resources because Nintendo has all the money and resources needed to do any game it just come down to interest and them really wanted to do it. I honestly don't think that Nintendo believes that 2D Metroid would sell anymore and that also had something to do with them not having any interest in doing the game.

@angrycreep: The fan game never went out to public after 10 years. If it did before that, Nintendo would obviously cease the game. The reason why they did it then and not before is because the fan game never went out to public.

Also, if they have plenty of cash, then why did they require MercurySteam to make the remake instead of doing it on their own?

Again we don't know anything about how devs work so don't assume things that you don't know about. Saying that its the fan game that made Nintendo want to make the 2D Metroid happen is idiotic because they stated from time again that they are already aware that there is demand for a Metroid game.

The fan game was made in public during the time the remake was underdevelopment. If it was made in public then, it would still have got canned due to copyright law.

@Artwark: My man that fan made game has been out in the public for a really lonnnnng time for years and years enough time for Nintendo to do something if they really wanted to stop it a long time ago. Let me get you out of your doubts, the fan made game was first made public January 03, 2008 and the first demo of the game was release in late 2011. The announcement of the game was made public years and years ago when the whole thing started so you can't say that this game went under the radar or unless Nintendo has been living under a rock and they really didn't know about it.

There's really nothing anyone can say to tell you that this game has been in the making for a really long time and Nintendo might have known something and really didn't put too much thought into it until it was finally release and they saw the attention that was getting and decided to do something about it. They are billionaire cash is not the reason why they haven't done the game so you need to stop with that money crap excuse. Also another thing that I was trying to say when I said that Nintendo saw the attention the game was getting and decided to do their own version is just a simple thought that, that could have very well had been the case but I guess we will never know because even if that was the case Nintendo is no telling. Regardless you admitted or not Nintendo haven't had any interest in making a solid Metroid game in a really really long time and if you ask me I say 2004 and Metroid Zero Mission.

@angrycreep: I find it funny that they were working on a first person Metroid then suddenly stopped in 2015 and now deny they ever worked on such a thing. http://metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Metroid_(MercurySteam_prototype) I think you're right. I think they were trying to make Metroid an FPS due to how popular they are because they didn't understand just how popular 2D sidescrollers still are. I think the fan game threw them for a loop.

I will most definitely be purchasing this. Metriod Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission were my favorite 2D metroids, and this looks like it will be in the same league as those games.

@CapmJim: It will be difficult to top AM2R game. That fan made Metroid 2 remake is by far the best Metroid game that I have ever played and the funny part is that Nintendo had nothing to do with it.

I can't believe that they finally caved. I really wish they'd give us those BS Zelda games or just properly remake the first two Zelda games since those really are the last major Nintendo IPs that need it for 8 bit installments.

My 3DS has been my most favorite handheld ever and has brought me a lot of joy over the last 6 years. However, Nintendo get your ish together. Most of the games being announced for 3DS should have been in development for the Switch instead(luckily we will be getting a new Metroid game for the Switch). The DS has enjoyed a very long life, let it die. lets move more towards the future. My Switch has been gathering dust since I beat Zelda and I'm eagerly waiting for the next best thing to get my hands on.

@twztid13: Nobodies asking for the world to cater to me, but if you can't see that the Switch is the DS on crack and is the likely successor of the DS(despite Nintendo's assertion that they're going to continue supporting the DS), then you must be blind, ignorant, or just dumb. The DS has had over 10 years worth of games at this point. Nintendo has done more than enough to support it by this point. The Switch is an amazing console and should have all of Nintendo's resources put towards it at this point. I want Nintendo to shake things up and compete with MS and Sony again. In order to do that they need to beef up the library on the Switch(ports of old games like Monster Hunter Generations or Skyrim don't count). Its the clear successor whether you want to believe it or not and Nintendo needs to move on from the DS already.

@dkidfrmdbx: While I agree that this game would possibly do better on Switch, this is Nintendo giving a thank you note for those who supported the 3DS and this game pretty much nails it and pretty much can sum up any 3DS owner's library.

@Artwark: I'm sure this game and many other that are coming for the 3DS will be amazing even if i wished Nintendo would move on to the Switch. I will probably still buy this game and any RPG made by Atlus for the 3DS.

Most surprising is new announcements of new 3DS games!!! Woot-woot! All the Switch owners predicting the early demise of the 3DS are proven wrong once again... how's that crow tasting? You guys have enough for left-overs yet?

@Redsyrup: I don't see the problem with the 3DS, it's still a money making machine and everyone loves it, including me

But I'll give it PROBABLY another year until it's done, especially with the core Pokemon games coming to Switch.

@alexandrious: Or not. Nintendo may have seen the popularity of AM2R, shut it down, and then hired Mercury Stream to author their own port. Really a shame AM2R is a beautiful game in looks, sounds and controls and is probably more deserving.
