E3 2017: Xbox One/PS4 Cross-Play Could Happen For Minecraft

Minecraft developer says it is hopeful that Sony and Microsoft can work together to make it happen.

Yesterday during Microsoft's E3 2017 briefing, the company announced a big change for Minecraft. Going forward, basically all versions of the sandbox game are becoming unified, with cross-platform play letting people play together wherever they are. This includes Xbox One-Nintendo Switch cross-play, but could this ever be extended to PlayStation 4?

Aubrey Norris, who works on the Minecraft team at Xbox, said on Twitter that the company "would love to have PlayStation players along with the unified Minecraft." She added: "Hope that we can." This tweet came in response to someone who took the recent unification news as something that would "kill" the PlayStation editions of the game by alienating that audience.

The big changes for Minecraft were announced during Microsoft's E3 2017 briefing on Sunday. You can read more about that change and what it means here in GameSpot's previous coverage.

Minecraft is becoming one of the first console games ever to support cross-play between competing consoles in the form of Xbox One-Nintendo Switch connectivity.

In March 2016, Microsoft publicly announced that it was open to connecting Xbox Live to other gaming networks, including PlayStation Network and Nintendo's own online service. Sony later suggested it was open to this, but it has not happened yet.

Keep checking back with GameSpot soon for lots more on Minecraft, cross-play, and more from E3 2017. Ubisoft's briefing is coming up this afternoon at 1 PM PT, while Sony's is slated for 6 PM PT.

Sony is indeed being ass hats on this end. Nintendo is getting awful comfy around MS lately.

i see alot of comments about sony fans, you are aware no one gives a crap right? its minecraft, not the next big thing....not sure why anyone cares at this point....its kind of strange this is even news.....i dont see a reason for wanting to play across different systems, most people buy their consoles according to what their friends play so as to be able to play with them lol

@dev-raid1: So untrue so many kids play this game and kids are impulse buyers they don't go around checking with friends on what they have they see a commercial and thats all i takes... my niece was complaining last week that she couldn't play minecraft with her friends because nobody has the switch so she still plays it on her ipad. its a big deal to these young kids that aren't fanboy sheeps.

@deadpoolking: ummm you didnt make any points that refute what i said....little kids dont buy anything, their parents do, clearly im talking about people that can walk 3 blocks by themselves lmao, not 6 year olds guy...my nephew gets the systems that his freinds play on, you didnt make a point with that. unless you are a solo gamer you buy what you know your friends will be on, there is no debating that...you can try but you know its true

It's weird that Nintendo allowed cross-play before Sony did for this generation.

@dreadborne: Dedicated servers in games are the choice of the developers not sony.

@LeoKRock: during the 360 ps3 era sony was willing to do cross platform gaming but Microsoft was the unwilling participant. I remember reading Microsoft reason/excuse why but cant remember the reasoning. Now its just reverse microsoft wants it but sony is the unwilling participant and ofcourse they have their reason/excuse why.

Sony's probably fed up with Microsoft retracing their every move all the time.
