E3 2018: Assassin's Creed Odyssey -- What We Know And Want

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Our E3 wishlist for the new Assassin's Creed game.

A new Assassin's Creed game was inevitable; it was only a matter of time before it came along. May's big Walmart Canada leak suggested an announcement could be coming soon, and following another, more specific leak, Ubisoft has confirmed the game and said it will show up at E3. Here's what little we (possibly) know about the game--titled Assassin's Creed Odyssey--and what we want to see at E3 2018.

What We Know So Far

Ubisoft has done little more than confirm the new Assassin's Creed, so little is certain. The publisher did recently say it has an unannounced triple-A game launching during the current fiscal year, which runs through March 2019. It's unclear whether this game is a new IP or part of an existing one, but the fact that it didn't tout it as a new one suggests it's a sequel--meaning Assassin's Creed fit the bill perfectly. (Of course, it could have also been a new Splinter Cell.)

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Odyssey Announced; Ubisoft Confirms E3 Reveal - GS News Update

The aforementioned Walmart Canada leak has already been proven correct about a pair of games, Rage 2 and Lego DC Super-Villains. That doesn't mean the other games that were listed are real, but it did make the one for something simply called "Assassin's Creed" a bit more believable.

Further bolstering the case for a new game is a report by JeuxVideo, which obtained an image of a collectible keychain. The packaging features what could be the name of the game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The keychain itself is what looks like an Ancient Greek helmet; combined with the name, Ancient Greece could very well be the game's setting. The teaser video above also features a rather 300-ish clip of someone being kicked off a cliff, further reinforcing this assumption.

What's Confirmed For E3?

The new game is officially called Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The Walmart Canada leak and possible release timing would make E3 the perfect time for an announcement, but we've gotten that a bit early, presumably thanks to the leaks. Ubisoft had previously teased it would have something to reveal during its press conference.

It might feel a little soon for a new game, as Assassin's Creed Origins only released this past fall. But with the exception of the gap that preceded it, AC has traditionally seen annual installments. Odyssey could be a return to that release schedule.

What We Hope To See At E3

One welcome change we'd love to see is more variety in mission design. Origins frequently boiled down to clearing an enemy camp or rescuing a prisoner from one. Those are fine, but having more things to do--and more options in how to tackle a given situation--would help to keep things fresh, particularly during side quests.

Assassin's Creed Origins
Assassin's Creed Origins

Origins also improved upon the series' combat, but it remained relatively loose and unrefined. With Ancient Greece having such a rich history when it comes to fighting and warfare, we'd love to see this area of the game further overhauled.

Likewise, we want to see the world itself bolstered. Origins' cities were fascinating to explore, but outside of them, there were huge swaths of empty land that did little but pad out the world's size. One way of doing this could be to provide meaningful reasons to go places and collect things, rather than the numerous "go here and collect an object that serves no purpose" objectives in Origins. Our fingers are crossed that Discovery Tour also makes a return.

After so many rapid-fire sequels, Origins was lauded for introducing a number of new mechanics and RPG elements, even if it wasn't a complete reimagining for the series. The number of changes can perhaps be attributed in part to the additional development time that was spent on the game. If Ubisoft does plan to bring out a new entry this year, what we'd love more than anything is for it to demonstrate that this is another meaningful step forward for the franchise.

AC Odyssey looks like it's maintaining the quality of AC Origins so I'm going to buy it eventually, but not at launch because Ubisoft are getting greedy again. The AC Origins Gold Edition was £70, but the AC Odyssey Gold Edition is £80. £10 extra because they feel they have regained market share after the success of AC Origins.

I will buy it when the price matches AC Origins because I feel that was perfect value for money. Hype is not going to sucker me in on this one with Ubisoft getting up to their old tricks. They are pricing the product and haven't even told us what is inside the season pass. I don't buy blind with my fingers crossed.

I'm reserving judgment on this until I actually see the game in action. Seems like the franchise is gearing the experience more towards branching narratives (which would suggest no modern-day protag) and role-play. This could be bad for a plethora of reasons, but it's obvious they want to compete with the likes of Witcher.

I'm also noticing a heavier emphasis on combat and sea-battles, which would be fine, but to accommodate these features they've taken a few steps back from the Unity formula of 'stealth and planning', which is a shame because it should be the franchise's bread and butter. The series should be progressing the stealth components rather than the fighting components, but what are you going to do with Ubisoft, am I right?

I'm not opposed to the new setting at all, but the Spartan helmet on the logo is slightly unsettling to me for an Assassin's Creed title. It may suggest a more combat-heavy experience, but we'll have to wait and see how this goes.

I actually liked the miles of desolate land between the towns and cities. It gave a true sense of scale to the place. You could always fast travel if you didn't like exploring. My only concern was there was not enough to find in the desert, there were some things, but not enough.

Also, I wish Ubi had kept to their plan of a new Creed game every 2 years - the extra year did wonders for Origins. It was the first one in 3 games (after Unity and Syndicate which I hated) I actually enjoyed.

COOOOOOOOO-OPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!! Add it, I want to kill people with my friends online, and not as a retarded secondary thought like in Unity. A strong campaign that can be played either single or co-op would freshen this series up dramatically. Co-op kills, etc, the possibilities are endless!

What we hope to see at E3? Not another Assasin's Creed, it's not surprising anymore so i'm very tired of this bunch of games on E3, hope for some information about TES.

Level locking certain areas is the dumbest thing they could have done in the last game. It's so fun to discover a new cool place and then OH WAIT YOU CAN'T GO THERE YOU HAVE TO BACK TRACK. I hope they learn from this.

@wickedsword7: I never had that issue, though, knowing other RPG of the past I was ahead of many levels, sure there was like Oh this guys to strong I am outa here, Several past AC games also had this, AC2 line for example, I liked having your understanding home base. I do hope they hold off until at least mid next year. As much as I am a fan of AC, I tend to take my time with them, though as soon as I finished AC1 I jumped streight into AC2, but I came into the series late. I rather have the game done right like ACO than like ACU (I waited till that game was patched)

@backagainlol: Dude chill ,you sound like an 11 year old goin’ into full tryhard mode which is bad for any persons’ image. The one x is good for what it strives to be, a 6 Tflop living room gaming console and it succeeds for the most part ,but ask any pc component expert and he’ll definitely tell you that Tflops mean jack shit where gaming is concerned ,the only thing that mostly matters is what hardware the device uses to achieve a floating point performance of that level,I.e. what gpu it has,its clock speed ,it’s number of tmu’s and rop’s etc. The one x does what it has been advertised for ,play most games at 4K 30fps but at what caveat? Reduced graphics settings that pair back a games' graphical prowess for the sake of allowing the console itself to achieve that 4K res at the desirable frame rate and for a $500 dollar console it certainly achieves that feat. By the way,if you don't have the $2000 to spend on an hdr monitor, you simply hook your pc to an hdr capable tv and à presto, you have 4k hdr ultra settings at 30/60fps with no need for all that motion blur covering the unstable framerate and due to the extra 6 million pixels that 4k brings in contrast to 1080p you don't even need to have anti-aliasing enabled as the extra pixels themselves compensate for any jagged edges a game might have. Oh and your assumption of me is a little bit rushed for console exclusive franchises i always have that ps4 pro or xbox one x lying under my glass cabinet ready to go. And to fan the flames even further, how's your fave console with no exclusives fairing, because as far as my knowledge goes, your good company Microsoft is treating us pc gamers far better than your xbox community which they are treating like trash by the way,by bringing all the xbox one exclusives on the windows store allowing us to enjoy them the way they were meant to be,with fully adjustable graphics settings and variable framerates.Answer back when you find a suitable answer. Oh and don't try to waste my time cause i got a job to do and daily tasks to fulfil,a thing known as having a life.Good day by the way!!!

Dear Gamespot, would you please stop disabling the comment section in the articles you put out? You have done so on every article there has been criticism regarding either criticizing the the article itself, or criticizing an announcement of some game.

Here are two examples. One is from this article.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/battlefield-5-boss-defends-female-characters-sayin/1100-6459228/

I am guessing this article had the comment section disabled because you guys found someone saying something inappropriate. But there were also a lot of people who had some valid criticism, such as it was not clear whether the trailer was singleplater or multiplayer match. As well as historic inaccuracies about WW2. Which we can all agree is not something the world is very fond if it is meddled with. *Cough* Holocaust deniers *Cough*

The next article is from this one

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/deadpool-2-and-solo-are-both-worse-thanks-to-one-t/1100-6459359/

Which is an opinion piece from you guys, the comment section was not even enabled here, I am guessing it has to do that there are probably some who do not agree with this opinion piece. Would it not be more productive if you knew what other people think about this opinion piece? Rather than just stop people from commenting?

In essence what I am trying to say is that criticism is not something to be afraid or feedback, as it is the only way you guys can really understand what people think. So please stop disabling the comment section, and yes idiots and trolls do exist but they will always exist.

@bulletproff: I think there is a pretty major difference between someone denying the Holocaust happened and there being a woman soldier in a video game as far historic inaccuracies go lol. One is denying a huge part of history and the denial is generally based in cultural prejudices. The second is a fictional video game, that simply happens during a real event. The keyword there is fictional. Its a game that never made any claims to being accurate, so to expect it to be so, would be foolhardy. Its like being upset that its historically inaccurate that in 1960 there were underwater cities full of genetic monsters.

@Sepewrath: I am simply pointing out that some people have pointed out many inaccuracies with what they have presented.

Also I am not talking about the women fighting in the war. I am talking about Gamespot lack of tolerance for comments they dislike. Whether it is a question of history inaccuracy or in denial of things happening during the WW2 is not my point. My point is simply put just because someone disagrees with what the article says, it is really weird that they would disable the comments section completely.

@bulletproff: OK fair enough, I thought you were trying to sell the idea of having an issue with how accurate the next Battlefield is making no attempt to be. But to play devils advocate, if you frequent the gaming sites a lot--you know how just downright toxic the comments section can be. Most people cant be sensible anymore with their negative comments.

I really liked Origins too, and will also get RDR 2 on day one. Having said that I'm getting open world fatigue, big time. Been playing Far Cry 4, not 5 and these games are SO REPETITIVE that I don't know how anyone can play these games one after another and not get tired of it.

This new AC game is going to have to wait a few years for me to play it.

Since the game connects to Greece, Could you guys put the Spartans into the storyline somehow? Maybe connect the story of the 300 Spartans to the game? Unless events took place in a different time period. Would be cool.

@Slinqy:

I disagree, I think the stories are good enough without it. It was done better in origins, but it was dreadful in black flag.

In Origins the story would have flowed fine without the modern day element IMO. It told a good story based on historic events.

What I want:

NO FUTURE STORY... you just are the guy in the past. The future story has been a complete waste after AC3. Just Get Rid Of It!

No ship combat. It was great in Black Flag, it doesn't work when you don't have cannons!

Battlefield might have decided their historical fiction doesn't need the historical part, but I expect the same attention to detail as we got in Origins here.

Finally, if they name it Odyssey and we don't get to play as Odysseus, I will be eternally upset.

“One way of doing this could be to provide meaningful reasons to go places and collect things, rather than the numerous "go here and collect an object that serves no purpose" objectives in Origins.” - So, to be clear, you don’t like the same but want more of the same?

I loved Origins, and I’m hard pressed to find a quest where you retrieved something for an npc that “serves no purpose”. For each individual quest, the item that you retrieve for the npc held a purpose for that quest and to that npc. No one should assume that every quest will hold significance for the player. As in real life, sometimes the reward is just helping your fellow person.

@revanxknight: Clearly these guys had no problem collecting insects and stones in Zelda BOTW(yeah...cause that had soo much purpose for NPCs right?). But hey, this is not Nintendo but ubisoft so clearly they have to criticize it.

Btw loved the new side quests direction that ubisoft gave origins by providing some story. For odessey I hope they improve upon it and take the story for side quest to be much more impactful than before like witcher 3 did.
