E3 2019: How Keanu Reeves Became Involved In Cyberpunk 2077

It was a "match made in heaven."

Everyone had their breath taken away when prolific movie star Keanu Reeves revealed Cyberpunk 2077's release date on Microsoft's E3 2019 stage. We know that Reeves will play the "legendary rockerboy" Johnny Silverhand, but how CD Projekt Red got the actor to be involved with the upcoming first-person RPG has remained a mystery--until now. We sat down with senior level designer Miles Tost to talk about how the Polish developer recruited Reeves.

Reeves is a new addition to the game, only being approached about a year ago or so. When asked why Reeves and not some other action star, Tost said Reeves was the perfect fit. Tost mentions his "rich background [in] cyberpunky stories"--titles like Johnny Mnemonic and The Matrix come to mind--and says "the roles he's been playing really fit" the team's vision for the game, calling it "a very natural match made in heaven."

Now Playing: How Cyberpunk 2077 Got Keanu Onboard | E3 2019

When asked about Reeves' reaction to CD Projekt Red's inquiry, Tost said Reeves is a "super cool guy" who "seems really into this and very passionate about the project and the role he's playing." Tost recalls a vivid moment during the pitch process where Reeves was "really getting into the role," enacting mannerisms Johnny Silverhand might actually have.

It's worth noting that, while Cyberpunk 2077 is Reeves' most recent video game casting, he's appeared in a handful of titles before, including action-adventure game Enter the Matrix, cooperative first-person shooter Payday 2, and big-name battle royale game Fortnite.

While the game won't come out until next year, Tost says he's confident the team will pull the project together and ship it when it's ready. "Our studio is one that really puts quality above everything, and it's also reassuring for me as a developer. I know we will not ship this game if it isn't ready by the time we decide to ship it. With that, I think gamers will be able to expect the kind of quality that we had with The Witcher 3 and then some."

Cyberpunk 2077 will launch on April 16, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. CD Projekt Red previously announced a North American-only PC version but swiftly changed its mind amid fan outcry.

I find this move pretty weak by CDPR. Reeves was obviously hired because of his current celebrity status on the internet to push those pre-orders and generate hype, not because he's an actor that's capable of contributing anything to the game (because, let's be honest, he's a likeable guy, sure, but a TERRIBLE actor). That's a pretty disgusting practice and I hope it doesn't become the norm for them or any other gaming company. It's below them.

Death Stranding I'm okay with, since they actually hired less popular but terrific actors, like Mads Mikkelsen and Lea Seydoux, for example. But Lady Gaga and Reeves? That's just disgusting.

@Berserk8989: mads better than keanu? ok. so this pretty much comes down to " i dont like actor x this is terrible practice. but i like actor y so whatever"

maybe i jusy read it wrong but if you want say using actors is wrong then its wrong. i wouldnt mind having no actors because it limits games and turns them closer to movies which i dont like. ive seen enough movies where de niro, pacino, damon, dicaprio do their thing. i dont need to see them in games doing that too

Playing as Keanu Reeves' likeness seems a little cheesy to me. No, it seems a LOT cheesy to me. I guess we're all done with creating awesome characters like Geralt from scratch.

@jsprunk: Well with Witcher they're now forced to use the god awful Henry Cavill. So if one day they plan make Cyberpunk live action, Keanu is the biggest man. No doubt the polish guys grew up with Speed, Matrix, Ronin etc. and now Wick.

Cyberpunk will be the best of video games by far, cd project red will destroy ea arts, bethesda ,and the other greedy online only game developers, they are giving the gamers what they want like single player and online combined NOT YOU MUST PLAY ONLINE ONLY OR MULTIPLAYER CRAP.why gamers are pushed and forced multiplayer nowadays is very sinister is it to spy on you or con you out of more money.well done cyberpunk you are gamers real friend.

John Wick

Johnny Mnemonic

Johnny Utah

John Constantine

Now we get Johnny Silverhand.

I'm noticing a pattern here. I've almost figured it out. I'm getting close. Any day now...

His “cyberpunky” roles plus his rocker role in Bill and Ted makes him a shoe in for this game.

This game's marketting must be taught at schools.

Sİnce the first reveal feeding community with bits of information and the final reveal of a beloved cast by all, is a masterwork marketting strategy.

Edit : It s been quite some time since I last ride on the Hype Train! CHOO CHOO!!!

I am so damned excited for this game. I was a huge fan of 2020 when I was in highschool and my older brother gave me all his source books. With how this game is shaping up, I can easily say this is looking like it will be my all time favorite game.

@smouche_mole: I'm on the hype train too. Witcher 3 is a great title and it spits in the faces of devs that have been acting wayyy too greedy.

(Bethesda, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Epic games all of the other heavy duty micro transaction pushing punks)

This one is looking to be a step up in the future of open world type games. Let's hope they don't let us down although I gotta say... It's one of the more impressive looking titles shown at E3 if not THE most impressive title. I think we're good lol.
