E3 2019: Xbox Project Scarlett Aiming To Support All Xbox One Games And Accessories

Phil Spencer wants to "respect" your purchases.

The new Xbox Scarlett platform--now known as Xbox Series X--will be fully forward compatible, meaning it will not only play existing Xbox One games, but it will also support the accessories like controllers and other peripherals you may already own. Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed this during the Inside Xbox stream at E3 2019 on June 10.

"As gaming goes from all physical to a combination physical and digital I think us respecting the purchases people have made, at no charge, allowing them to be able to continue to play their games" is very important, Spencer said.

Now Playing: New Xbox At E3: Everything We Learned About Scarlett

When Microsoft started designing the Xbox Scarlett platform, Microsoft wanted to ensure it was compatible across "all" generations of Xbox. Spencer said multiple times that he wanted to make sure players felt "respected" in regards to their purchases.

Spencer said the Xbox One is the "most compatible console" he's ever owned. The Xbox One plays Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games through backwards compatibility either on disc or digitally.

In a follow-up segment on the Inside Xbox stream, Microsoft said it aims to have "every single" Xbox One game playable on Xbox Scarlett.

For its part, Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 is also planned to be compatible with PlayStation 4 titles and accessories.

Xbox Scarlett is Microsoft's "console plan" for 2020, executive Matt Booty told Eurogamer. It's rumored that there will be two next-generation consoles. The one Microsoft talked about during its E3 press conference is reportedly the high-end system, codenamed Anaconda, with a lower-spec model, Lockhart, also coming at a lower price point. This is all speculation at this point, but keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

This makes the Xbox Scarlett appear to be an excellent value, but it's announcement for next year may hinder the sales of Xbox One X at this time. The X is a great value for the specs it has, and I'd considered a mid-generation upgrade, but knowing another upgrade is one year one roughly, that will be fully compatible with everything the 1-S and 1-X can do, makes an upgrade to a 1-X less appealing. Of course, once Scarlett drops there could be very deep price cuts to the 1-X. Either way, it makes it clear that the best thing for a lot of us to do is wait, assuming we already have an Xbox One or Xbox One S. Still, bravo for going all in on peripheral and game compatibility.

"The new Xbox Scarlett platform will be fully forward compatible"

I think you mean backward. Supporting last gen peripherals is not forward compatible.

Sounds promising so far in terms of hardware and software. As for the games...

They still need to remember how to make video games though which is the whole point of getting this thing lol... Haven't had a good halo or gears since 2010/2011.

No micro transactions, decent amount of focus to the story, and launch a finished game with a satisfying amount of content like you used to please : )

Yeah yeah I know I know... What I just said has a very low chance of happening lol. I can hope can't I? Of course if the games are a let down then of course I wont get the scarlet just like I didn't even get a xbox one.

Some of the remakes and indie titles shown at xbox e3 this year looked pretty dope though : )

Why wouldn't it? Xbox Scarlett is just a very overclocked Xbox One. Same hardware, same architecture, same GPU, same OS.

I'm surprised there's not more original Xbox games in BC, too. It was also x86 like the One and Scarlet.

Only the PowerPC-based Xbox 360 stands alone as the oddball architecture. Even then, Microsoft's Xbox 360 "xcode" dev tools allowed easy compiling and porting to PC, which means easy porting to Xbox One (as long as you have the source code).
