E3 2021 Was Xbox's Biggest Show Ever By Viewers

Phil Spencer says he hasn't seen this much energy and excitement since the Xbox 360 days.

The Xbox E3 2021 briefing on Sunday was the biggest E3 in Xbox's history based on viewers. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed this on Twitter where he also thanked everyone for the "great week."

"We haven't felt players and the team sharing so much energy and excitement since the 360 era. We're inspired by the community's belief in Xbox and we will continue to innovate with players at the center of everything we do," he said.

Now Playing: Halo Infinite Multiplayer Trailer | Xbox + Bethesda E3 2021

Microsoft's Xbox showcase at E3 this year was regarded by some to be among the company's strongest in recent years, fueled in part by news from the company's newest subsidiary, Bethesda. During the event, we got a Starfield release date and trailer, the announcement of a new game from Arkane called Redfall, the reveal of Halo Infinite's multiplayer, and news about a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover with Sea of Thieves.

For lots more on the Xbox E3 showcase, check out GameSpot's roundup of all the big Xbox at E3 2021 news.

Microsoft's main E3 briefing may be over, but the company has an Xbox Games Showcase: Extended event today, June 17, where it's expected to provide updates on a number of projects from across its studios. Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 studio Ninja Theory are among the teams lined up for the two-hour event.

I think Microsoft have delivered solid and consistent showcases for the past few years including this one. They've got the tone and balance right between showing games and talking heads. Some of the other publishers' own showcases this year left a lot to be desired and they could learn a lot. Quite a few of the E3 branded shows completely missed the mark, and I have to wonder if gamers were the audience at all for some of them.

Anyway, good luck to MS going forward.

Xbox is such a pathetic platform.. they can’t make quality games so they borrow some of Bill Gates money and steal games that were already being made away from other platforms.. What a stain on the industry

I am proud of what XB has done & proud the direction that they are taking, but could they do more & do it quicker?

I think a quick fix might be to bring back some classic games and/or remaster them. I was really hoping that they would have announced at least 10-12 more titles to backwards compatibility & had they done that on top of their showing they would have killed it over the top!

If I am being honest I do not like to play Ori, Hellblade, Sea of Thieves, Battletoads, Cuphead & not excited for Fable, Avowed, The Medium or Everwild. But I do like the graphically superior renditions of Crash & Spyro and the comical Lococycles with decent graphics and I think it is the graphics & art style that keep me engaged along with the gameplay mechanics. What I am most excited to play are games like Titanfall & I LOVE the campaign and multiplayer for Titanfall, SW Batllefront, COD, & Battlefield . I love the action of Anthem & Outriders without the loot & rpg elements. And I would love to see more of those types of games & as it stands it seems empty for next gen aside from BF2042 (which has no single player campaign & sux). XB needs to get back to its roots & give us more games like Halo & Gears with a mix of the aforementioned...bring back BRO games!!! Crossfire X is a good direction! Forza Horizon looks phenomenal too!

A quicker fix is to bring more games to BC, such as MechAssault 1-2, 007, TMNT, Transformers, Ridge Racer, Binary Domain, House of the Dead, Time Crisis....to keep us engaged until next gen games trickle in.

A Cruis'n Blast or Asphalt to XB would have just made my 2021, sometimes simpler things can make all the difference.

the 360 really was the biggest era for MS, no doubt. They sold something like 80 million units and gave sony and the ps3 at the time a shit ton of trouble. It feels like the xbox series is going to do gangbuster sales this time around, on par if not better than the 360. Sony better be prepared, because this time around MS is going all out. They have the best console, the best subscription service, and some can argue even the best games.

Rumor has it Sony had to postpone Gran Turismo once they knew how great Forza Horizon 5 looks, plays and performs.

Oh Sony.....maybe if they would hire Microsoft to make their racing games instead.

@johnny0779: Never heard of that rumor and with all respect,i think you made it up.

Gran Turismo and the Horizon 5 are also very different type of racing games, any comparisson is not valid.
GT is about simmish racing on closed tracks(aside of uphill/downhill tracks). Due the nature of that, the graphical presentation is much more limited.
If you want to compare GT to other games, then do it vs Motorsport...both has to deal with the same graphical limitations.

@sladakrobot: When you have ANY Forza game coming out in the same year as Gran Turismo, the comparisons would be inevitable.....as 90% that matters at their core is the racing and fun factor....and you know Gran Turismo would had come short if Sony would had moved forward with it for the end of the year.

Racing is Racing at the end of the day.....

@johnny0779: its still not a valid comparisson.

Its like comparing CoD with Borderlands.

I wouldn't be so proud of that. Since the Bethesda show was fused with Xbox's due to the merger. And the main fact that Sony wasn't there.

@illegal_peanut: lol Bethesda had how many games there 3 or 4...out of 30. 27 of 30 will be day one Game Pass as well. Point is you trying to act like Microsofts show was only good because of Bethesda..when in fact there were few Bethesda titles...majority of the games that impressed me had nothing to do with Bethesda lol.

As for Sony not being there is irrelevant...how long has it been since they were at E3 acting like this is the first year they skipped...

lol I get it don't want to give credit where credit is due that's cool...let's not act though like Sony is doing anything. How's God Of War 2 coming oh yea that's right sometime next year(after being delayed) How about Horizon still holding on to hope that it will be released this year lol.

At least with Microsoft the games they have mentioned etc are this year or next. Unlike Sony, Microsoft doesn't usually dwell on games that won't be out for like 2 years or longer lol. Sony is known for that and still delaying them...

“We are pleased to see so many people waiting for salvation, for the deliverance we’ve been promising. Your Faith has empowered our service and as our profits reach new heights, we understand that there’s no hurry for these games to be released. Our 30+ different gaming studios thank you for the time and patience you have given them.”

I was expecting Fables, Starfield and Perfect Dark gameplay. Came away satisfied by FH5 and Stalker 2 instead.

@bloodbornelore: For what it's worth, if you like the Metro series, the PS5 and XBOX Series X/S upgraded versions drop tomorrow and they just look incredible.

Thought I would mention it since the Metro games are very much like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

@thecupidstunts: Thanks mate but I own Metro Redux and Metro (something) Light as a double pack which came “Free” on PS+ a few years ago. I thought they were quite good. Once you crank up the movement sensitivity, it plays really well. Whilst they didn’t hold my attention long enough for me to complete either of them, I think Stalker 2 looks profoundly better. I know graphics mean very little in the grand scheme of things that are gaming but I am a sucker, a real slut when it comes to gorgeous graphics. And the swamp/lake stuff in Stalker 2 looks like an FPS wet dream to me. If there’s anything making me want a Series X this year, it’s that amazing-looking game. It is that next step forward in graphics, like Horizon: FW, new Ratchet and Forza Horizon 5, to name just a few. What I saw from that gameplay footage represents exactly why I upgrade. Visuals are 10/10 stunning and the setting looks more fun than Metro too.

@bloodbornelore: It does look amazing to be sure. And the Forza series is one of my favorite franchises in any genre, so I was thrilled to see how great FH5 looks. 👍

@thecupidstunts: Gotta love those dusty sand physics and seeing the wheels churn it all up. It should be perfect because the Mexican landscape is mostly flat. I had a gripe with the last Horizon game, because being from the UK, I know England’s country roads should have been a lot, lot, narrower and a lot, lot more hilly than what FH4 presented it as. Then again, England’s country roads take some skill to drive down at just 20mph, let alone 120mph, so they probably tweaked that to make a better racing game.

The expectations to the new E3 format were big to begin with.

If the show was good, depends what you was looking forward to see.
Halo fans aswell as haters wanted to see if 343i could come back with better graphical presentation of Infinite...which they did btw, there was absolutely no negative comment about it since.

Xbox/Bethesda and Nintendo did great,Capcom+SE+Ubisoft+others dissapointed

@sladakrobot: Watch that first footage of Halo: Infinite E3 2021 and keep an eye on that mountain in the background having pop-up/draw-distance issues. It’s right near the beginning as the narrator speaks, introducing the open world map, right off the bat, it’s showing some technical issues. Struggling to load a map which looks nice but not exactly mind-blowing but I don’t see how it can struggle to load the map. It should be running much more smoothly by now, especially for such an important showcase of their flagship title.

A lot of viewers doesn't mean it was a great show. Just like a lot of preorders doesn't mean a game is great... I'm looking at you, Cyberpunk. The show overall was ok

It was a very good one, indeed. Not hard when Sony once again did not take part on it.

Great one, nonetheless.

Jesus Christ, Phill, we get it. You think you're great and everything you do is amazing. But will the show where its just xbox and not xbox/Bethesda be as "big" or do you think absorbing the previous biggest e3 show into yours maybe kicked the numbers up a bit?

@voldrik: All the ponies who watched drove up the numbers, seeing that they had nothing else to watch this week.
