E3 2022 Canceled, Including Its Digital-Only Component

The show will not go on.

E3 2022 has been canceled. Previously, plans had been announced to host a digital-only event in lieu of the typical physical event, but the group that runs it, the ESA, has now confirmed that the show will not take place in any form.

A spokesperson for the ESA told VentureBeat that E3 will return in 2023 with a "reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations."

The statement continues: "We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022. Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience."

The ESA also confirmed that E3 2023 will be held in Los Angeles, and not some other city, although some suspect that E3 is done for.

E3 2019 was the last edition of the show to host an in-person event. All forms of what would have been E3 2020 were canceled, while E3 2021 was held as an online event.

When E3 does return in 2023, the ESA said it hopes to the show can "revitalize" the event after taking a year off. "We are using this time to shape plans for 2023 and are working with our members to ensure that the revitalized showcase sets a new standard for hybrid industry events and fan engagement," the ESA said. "We look forward to the individual showcases planned for 2022 and will join the community in celebrating and promoting the new titles being presented. ESA made the decision to focus its resources and use this time to shape our plans and deliver an all-new experience that delights fans, who have the highest expectations for the premier event in video games."

While E3 2022 may not be going ahead, Geoff Keighley's annual Summer Game Fest is coming back this year, though there are no details yet regarding the specifics of the show. That said, Keighley tweeted a winky face just after news broke that E3 2022 might not be happening this year, which is curious.

Gamescom is also expected to return this year with an in-person component. The full details of this summer's video game convention schedule are not available yet, but keep checking back for more.

The reported cancellation of E3 2022 comes as other video game industry events return to in-person gatherings. PAX East is going forward in Boston this month, while GDC 2022 took place earlier in March. Attendance for GDC 2022 was down significantly from previous years, and COVID is surely playing a role in that.

I wouldn't be shocked if Comic Con is next on the list to be axed due to "fear of COVID." Guess what CA? Cry me a river with this and your $7 a gallon gas prices. You were too scared to get of Newsom and his cronies so you get exactly what you deserve.

I guess two Olympics, a super bowl and the upcoming world cup weren't enough to convince them E3 would be perfectly safe.

Well... it seems like the perfect time for videogame journalism companies to finally take the hint. It's over, move on and onto new horizons before it's too late.

thats a shame since i much prefer E3 to whatever ego filling garbage Geoff Keighley puts on. however i still see microsoft ubisoft and sony do with their own showcases more than likely around june as always.

Oh no, please say it ain't so? I would much prefer a one week bonanza rather than minced meat that takes the confounding hype away. Gradual reveals are just not the same and they had plenty of time to put something together.

M$ will try to push it as long as they can to the end of July, or August and Sony will always wait first to see what they have up their sleeves.

That's alright by me. Since Nintendo has already confirmed that nothing appealing will be coming to the Switch this year except for a pair of TMNT games, what could possibly be announced at E3 anyway?

I mean at this point, E3 has become kind of redundant. It’s kind of become a shell of its former self in the past few years. I’d rather have a few small online showcases from the major developers throughout out the year showing off upcoming games rather than wait a whole year for major announcements. While I have my memories of some of the best E3’s from years past, and while it was a staple in the gaming industry for a long time, it’s like the old saying goes…all good things must come to an end…

E3 used to be a blast. Back around mid~to~late 2000's.

~I always like Phil SPencer, ToddHoward(yeah /cringe i know)

But i esp liked that it was a superbowl weekend for gamers

and esp for upcoming game reveals...

Hate on it all you want it's not like ya needed to watch all of the event.

just the company/devs you liked.

Good, this was nothing but a self fallating event. All they did was peddle fake game demos of products that were nothing of the sort.

Such a shame. It's my favorite gaming event of the year. These piecemeal shows Nintendo and Sony put out suck hard. Then again, Sony's last 2 E3 events were also pretty bad. But I loved having big events on the big stage with multiple big reveals. Now all we get is boring infomercials with zero fanfare. And it's starting to look like this is the end for the show, not just this year but forever. That's it, that's all. B bye. Still not watching State of Play or Nintendo Direct. I'll get my game reveals and such from here. Just don't do away with the comment section which seems to be the norm these days. Every week, another website kills their comment section because they're too lazy or cheap to mod the comments. "See you on Facebook and Twitter!!!!" No. You won't.

So what planet are these people living on if they think there is still a pandemic going on? Since last October I've been to 6 concerts and 4 sporting events. People packed like sardines and nobody distancing or wearing a mask and it was awesome and nobody is getting sick and dying. The pandemic is over, what a moronic move to cancel anything because of something that no longer exists. A true shame.

@archangel72: It's not over. People just stop caring about its existence after a while.

Which is the same thing that happened back in the middles ages with the black death.

You can only herd people in their homes for so long.

Plus, it's much laxer than the middle ages. Since people are starting to get an immunity. Either from a vax, or exposure. Plus due to modern medicine and health tools at our disposal. It's not like the plague where everyone was dying, left, right, and center. Because people took baths every 2 weeks/months with little to no soap. While also living in the same nasty dwelling the plague-infested rats did.

@illegal_peanut: COVID is here to stay in whatever form it next mutates into. Nobody cares anymore. The fear mongering tactics are played out and people are beyond done with it. Anyone else who still wants to live in fear of this crap can do so on their own time. Everyone else has moved on with their lives.

@archangel72: If it's over, why is there a new subvariant on the rise from all the people now running around without their masks? Clearly on THEIR planet they have access to medical experts and professionals who know what the **** they are talking about as opposed to a bunch of truckers who now seem to believe the war in Ukraine is just a myth.

And here's some fun news: people who get Covid have a much higher chance of triggering early onset degenerative diseases, young or old: https://aaic.alz.org/releases_2021/covid-19-cognitive-impact.asp

Frankly, this is just common sense. ANY major infection, of any kind, even simple food poisoning (as I discovered) can trigger the onset of chronic inflammation which can lead to all sorts of diseases. Unless you're in your 20s or younger, or you get a crap ton of sunlight apparently.

Morale of the story: stop thinking about yourself. It's not about you. It's about everyone else who can get sick. Frankly, I'm shocked at how few people give a damn about their parents or the other elderly or sick people in their lives.

@archangel72: Someone I know just died of it yesterday. People under 5 still don't even have the option to get vaccinated. And people who may attend E3 are developers from many countries around the world who are struggling with it. I'm happy for you that you've been less affected but don't call it "over" or "moronic" when infection rates and hospitalizations are still growing where I live in the US to the point where we might be considered "high" in days, largely due to spread amongst people in their 20s who are acting like its over when unfortunately it still isn't.

@zelda37: I feel for both sides. I personally have had it twice and it wasnt a big deal. So i never had any fear of it and didnt alter my lifestyle.

But there are people that have had family and friends die from it. So from that camp, I get the desire to want to just avoid it and help to stop passing it on to others. Then of course if you have a very young child, I can understand the fear of mistankenly killing your newborn child because you wanted to look at video games in person.

I say keep the events open and let people choose how to live. But if they want to cancel, whatever. They are the ones not getting paid, not me.

I mean, why should companies spend money on something they know is digital right from the start, when they can stream on their own channels? Of course Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and such will stream their conferences in summer as always.
