EA acquires social RPG developer KlickNation

Dragon Age publisher picks up RPG-centric social developer; studio renamed BioWare Sacramento, forming BioWare Social.

EA has for the past couple of years been on a buying spree of casual game developers, having picked up the likes of PopCap, Playfish, and Chillingo, to name a few. That trend continued today, as EA announced that it has acquired social role-playing game developer KlickNation. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Expect more Dragon Age to come to Facebook.
Expect more Dragon Age to come to Facebook.

KlickNation is primarily known for its free-to-play, microtransaction-supported offerings such as SuperHero City, Age of Champions, and Six Gun Galaxy. The newly acquired studio will be renamed BioWare Sacramento, and it will join with BioWare San Francisco (Dragon Age Legends) to form a new business unit, BioWare Social.

Speaking to the acquisition, BioWare head Ray Muzyka said, "KlickNation's expertise in building innovative and compelling RPGs for social platforms makes them a seamless tuck-in with the BioWare team at EA. We share the same creative values. The new BioWare Social unit will bring BioWare and EA franchises to the growing audience of core gamers who are looking for high-quality, rich gameplay experiences on social platforms."

BioWare now counts seven studios under its umbrella, with the developer also maintaining Canadian outfits in Edmonton and Montreal, as well as shops in San Francisco, California; Austin, Texas; Fairfax, Virginia; and Galway, Ireland.

This goes out to all those who might even be contemplating joining the facebook game, AgeofChampions, now an EA property run by the BWS group formerly known as KlickNation, DON'T DO IT.

Been playing the game for a while now and have to say I have never witnessed such poor development nor that volume of ridiculous mistakes. In my time I have witnessed events go unchecked where loot was given out and then taken back from their world raids. I see items with set stats being changed at will after they are released.

They do quests at random for outrageous prizes, and a few hours into it they reduce the drop rates, allowing only those fortunate enough to have been on when it was first introduced to amass thousands of dollars worth of items, while those afterward get next to nothing in comparison.

In all honesty I cannot recall ever playing a game so full of inconsistencies nor run in such a fly by the seat of your pants fashion. My advice, if even entertaining the notion of playing this game "walk away people". Do not subject yourself to this I implore you.

EA hungers for power while destroying games. This Company needs a Serious Bankruptcy.

Most games from EA owned studios decline in integrity, quality. DA2, ME series from pseudo bioware (I am sure DA2 was done by newly acquired bioware branch in weird place) are good examples. At least dev as DICE crytek aren't owned by EA so they can make quality games not jxxxed up by publisher. Certainely can't blame private company (EA) trying to make more money but most games from EA owned studio are kind of garbages or they are getting there. It's really simple to understand. Publisher thinks only of easy money earned through disposable dev like bioware, or any EA owned studios batching out severely restricted quality games like DA2. Publishers don't care sxxx about game quality, so games like annual call of duty can be born. However developers need to care about quality of the game and improve/ innovate their games for them to live on as a developer.

I feel the Bioware brand is now diluted and lost long time ago whatever prestige it held before.

I played the crap out of DA2, just because it said bioware on it. I really tried to convince myself to tell other people to play it but I couldn't. The game is crap, and Idk how much disappointment I can take from Bioware. If ME3 is anything short of contender for game of the year I'm done.

@kiopta1 Nothing to do with hate. I won't deny any company the right to make money. Believe it or not, i like cash myself. But when acquiring smaller competitors means milk them, butcher them, suck out the bone marrow and then sell the dry bones to the soap factory....you think that's good for GAMING in any way, shape or form ? Things aren't just "good" or "evil"..."love" or "hate"....but it always seems to boil down to just that in discussions like these.

The writing was on the wall in big fat letters when Bioware jumped into EA's bed. Nobody with even the slightest understanding of how EA works can be surprised with what has happend since. News like this are just reminding us and rubbing salt into the wound. Last Bioware and/or EA game i bought was DA Origins....and i can't see that change any day soon, despite BF3 and TOR. CDProjekt can become the "new Bioware". Well, for as long as it lasts anyway.

I don't know if EA is to blame for this. I think this is a decision Bioware made in being sold to EA. It's all about turning out a profit and increasing shares. Most of the legends that made Baldurs Gate, KOTOR and all the others have just moved on or have gotten old.

@rocker6 After playing the original DA, I can't say I'm surprised. I have the Ultimate Edition of it, and it's not a bad game. However, you can tell they took too many steps to appeal to people who are not hardcore RPG players. As for everyone claiming BioWare is dead, I agree. I actually reinstalled Baldur's Gate II + ToB last night, and I have to say that the BioWare / Black Isle studios who made that game must be rolling in their graves right now.

@nocoolnamejim Yeah, disgusting! Wish they at least got rid of the name "Bioware",and let the great studio die with some dignity,at this point its an insult to the RPG genre as a whole, and to all of us fans of the TRUE Bioware. My advice is,move on from EA and their "RPG" games, and support companies like Bethesda and CDP(especially now after those Witcher 2 pirate rate statistics),they're the only hope for the RPG genre now...

Bioware does not exist anymore. The name is simply kept around to try and keep their old fanbase in line for as long as possible while their new corporate masters at EA change the strategy to be as casual, social and "mainstream" as possible.
Expect more Dragon Age to come to Facebook.
Wow,its really sad how Dragon Age,a bold and great new IP is turning into a huge mockery,DA2 was mediocre,we have Facebook games, and next game will have competitive MP. Competitive MP in an RPG game that should always be about personal experience?! Disgusting...
