EA again in running for Consumerist's Worst Company In America title

FIFA and Battlefield publisher the only game company in consumer affairs blog's annual tournament.

Electronic Arts has again been included in The Consumerist's "Worst Company In America" annual community-voted tournament. Participants were chosen by reader nominations, which were then culled to 32 companies.

No Caption Provided

The consumer affairs blog has EA in the first round squaring off against ABInBev, the multinational beverage company behind major beer brands like Corona, Stella Artois, and Budweiser, among others.

EA is the only game-specific company appearing in the bracket. Other companies in the running for 2013 Worst Company In America include Apple, Ticketmaster, Wal-Mart, and Bank of America.

If EA comes out on top in this year's tournament, it will be a repeat victory for the company. The Consumerist named EA the 2012 Worst Company In America, knocking out Bank of America in the final round to take home the "Golden Poo" award.

EA CEO John Riccitiello resigned this week, explaining that "EA's shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss" in financial guidance. This came after a SimCity launch marred by server woes but also 1.1 million in total sales.

Some journalists think it is absurd that EA won the worst company award. I don't. We all know Bank of America is evil. We all already know they had a massive hand in trashing the economy because of greed and lobbying for deregulation and falsifying hundreds and thousands of documents and breaking the law a thousand times with everyone else's money etc, etc, etc.

We all already knew all of this, but many people might not know about EA. They might not know about the aggressively anti-consumer business practices that EA partakes. They might not know about the Online Pass, the manipulative DLC (like making you buy the "real" ending), and the manipulative micro transactions. They might not know about the dirty DRM that harms legitimate customers, but does nothing to those pirating the game.

People might not know how EA is consistently harming the industry through unending greed, that milks customers to the bone for features and and items that used to come with games. It would be like movie studios selling you half of a movie for full price, then selling you the rest of the movie as DLC, and then selling you the option to pause or rewind as a micro transaction.

@Landsharkk @mike300zxt Try reading the article. It clearly states that there are several rounds of voting a day, but only open for 3 hours each round. I just voted in the Google vs. Facebook round.

@mediarays How does that make them a good company? If anything, they'll probably ruin it even more than BF3.

Both EA and Ubisoft need to work on customer relations and how they treat their customers and fans.

They need to look at companies that have good will and fan loyalty, like Cd Projekt Red (The witcher developer) and others.

Treating your customers BETTER then criminals is a first step.

Stop accusing every pc players as a pirate and trying to shoehorn DRM (that will be hacked within a week usually) into games and allow your LEGIT paying customers to have a BETTER experience then a pirate (who doesn't have to deal with the DRM/red tape to play the games).

When you buy a game it should be EASY to instlal/play and offer reasons for people to support your company , because the game is good.

The Witcher is a prime example of this. They offer the games DRM free, even allowed people who bought the games from other stores to input their cd key onto gog.com and get the game on there sot hey could download it if they ever lose their cds or just want to have it there.

Also they upgrade teh games over time, adding new voicework, art assests, new content, etc (the enhanced editions) and turn around and give this away FREE to anyone who's bought the game.

That's the kind of company people like to support and give loyalty to, because they treat customers with RESPECT and give them incentives to support them. In turnt he players treat them with respect.

Thanks for ruining BioWare EA , show your developers a little respect and let them sort out issues before a forced launch and maybe you'll start to turn things around.

Perfect timing for EA. Last year they were in the heat of the Mass Effect 3 ending and everyone hated them, now they are in the heat of the Sim City server issue and everyone hates them again. If this was Worst Company in America March Madness, I would put my money on EA winning (well, in this case losing) the entire thing.

After Bank of America's suspected involvement in the LIBOR scandal, if they don't get named "worst company" then clearly the people casting the votes are idiots. EA still sucks, though.

It would awesome if gamer's could divert this energy to shit that actually matters rather than putting all their effort in a poll to suggest a company that charges for optional content in games is worse than companies that destroy the environment or get fined hundreds of millions for criminal negligence that led to people actually dying.

Makes me wanna play civilization V , pick roman empire and call my self "Emperor electronicArts" , obviously I'll fail hard since Iv'e never played civilizationV, the lesson is: "When you'r in rome act as roman, when you'r in 2013 there is no rome and FU EA"

When game companies hire non-gamers/non-game makers to run their corporation and issue company-wide directives, gamers suffer.

Mr. Riccitiello was not qualified (in terms of a love and passion for the industry) to run Electronic Arts. That much is clear - and EA's brand name is in the toilet.

Considering that Consumerist readers are among the most entitled people on the planet and that their "worst company award" is conducted in an entirely unscientific manner, the title means about as much as what the trophy represents.
