EA again in running for Consumerist's Worst Company In America title

FIFA and Battlefield publisher the only game company in consumer affairs blog's annual tournament.

Electronic Arts has again been included in The Consumerist's "Worst Company In America" annual community-voted tournament. Participants were chosen by reader nominations, which were then culled to 32 companies.

No Caption Provided

The consumer affairs blog has EA in the first round squaring off against ABInBev, the multinational beverage company behind major beer brands like Corona, Stella Artois, and Budweiser, among others.

EA is the only game-specific company appearing in the bracket. Other companies in the running for 2013 Worst Company In America include Apple, Ticketmaster, Wal-Mart, and Bank of America.

If EA comes out on top in this year's tournament, it will be a repeat victory for the company. The Consumerist named EA the 2012 Worst Company In America, knocking out Bank of America in the final round to take home the "Golden Poo" award.

EA CEO John Riccitiello resigned this week, explaining that "EA's shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss" in financial guidance. This came after a SimCity launch marred by server woes but also 1.1 million in total sales.

If the insane rumors about the nextbox are true, Microsoft may have dodged a bullet here since this comes before they are confirmed.

EA is a terrible company consumer-wise. If EA built cars, you'd have to play full price for the chassis, engine, and steering wheel, while the seats, mirrors, and wheels would be considered DLCs. Although I wouldn't consider them the worst company in America, no sir, that award goes to our GOVERNMENT.

@torres_unix It's a completely different industry with different standards and traditions, so that shit wouldn't fly. It'd also practically be quite impossible for them to do so, because building a fully functional car is much cheaper than chopping it up. I understand your point, but your example is bad.

@torres_unix its the people in them that make it bad, democracy is the best as a species we have, until somebody thinks of somthin better... but the weakest link in any system involving humans, is a human.

This says more about internet haters than it does about EA, it's absolutely ridiculous that they get so much more hate than other companies that have *actually* done seriously bad things. Games might be a big interest for many, but it's no big deal compared to other real-life issues. A victory for the vocal minority, epic fail for the people who designed the tournament to be like this.

@Hurvl What about the fact they steal your money every year and provide little or no new features to justify it? Theft is just as bad as polluting the water etc

@colbster Considering how bad EA's reputation has been for several years, people should know that they have to be careful when considering to buy a product published by EA. If they don't, they only have themselves to blame. They can't steal your money unless you let them do that. They're not a bank that swindles their customers out of their already deposited money, they don't use slave labour (although crunch time/harsh deadlines aren't good either), they don't cause diseases like tobacco companies. Bad games and shady marketing is nothing compared to that.

I swear if anyone votes for EA over half of these companies you are an idiot. Although EA does have easy match ups till the quarterfinals.

i dont know wether thats a testament to people not caring about the economy, or if EA has actually pissed off more people, than the BoA... given that the demographic for the likely voters who put EA above BoA is prolly young, who in all fairness barely vote in politic elections.... EA must of really accrued alot of hate in its consumer base to deserve this, and they have from personal experience... but boa victims lost more than just the value of a game or two...there really should be some categories or somthin.

@SauhlGood Totally understand what you meant. But I think those nominees are already representing the category they belong to. And people would still beg to see which are the worst if faced each other if they're being categorized. Like game of the year.

The EA hate is getting a little out of control -_-. It's true that they're screwing over the gaming industry but I don't think you can quite compare them to Bank of America....

I agree. EA is one of the worst. They really took the cake when they jumped on the social issue band wagon trying to earn some points. I lost what little respect I had for them then.

@EliOli You had respect for them???? I have about as much respect for them as I do for that female kicker that tried out for the NFL this year and kicked the ball a brisk 14 yards. They set games back the same way she set female progression back.

They will win hands down. Yes, Bank of America screws people on loans, but EA has driven a number of development studios in the ground which, cost people jobs. They really don't do anything but buy you out and screw up your products.

SimCty = EA Deaththrows.

I honestly never had a huge hate for EA until they started making it a requirement to purchase online passes for their games. For instance, I got ME3 and BF3 used as gifts, but then had to pay extra to play them online. Wtf? The game already costs money and so does Xbox Live. Not acceptable.

I wasn't very largely surprised when they made SimCity online only because they are just money grubbing little whores who are flailing around trying to get as much money as possible to save themselves. I actually find the game's abysmal lack of playability hilarious because it serves them right for trying to pull that crap again.

EA is the worst? I would have put Activision and Crapcom right beside them. EA is pretty bad, but enough to beat out Crapcom's on disc content that is then re-sold to consumers? How can EA compete with that? EA just makes incredibly poor choices.

Activision has resold CoD:MW in at least 10 re-iterations of the exact formula (going from WaW, sequels, BO, not forgetting copy and pasted Bond license titles, and including the new Walking Dead title). All three companies have practically stole billions of dollars from people, with quite frankly awful service from all three.

And if we move away from games, I'd put NRA up for vote as well because their mis-directed arguments against video games detracts from the real cause of gun violence; GUNS.

@JustArtificial I agree that Activision has resold the same game a bazillion times, but the reason they aren't up for worst company is because people that play those games don't seem to care that its the exact same shit every time.

@Psycold @JustArtificial This is about their overall track record. EA is doing a large number of things to many of its titles which is damaging its reputation. This is not just about one specific thing. Some examples are - always online requirements - massive amounts of games with day 1 dlc which nickle and dimes players on top of the standard purchase price - severely overpriced dlc - massive amounts of false advertising - refusing to allow returns on products - and the list goes on.

I'm sure this new year they will find more ways to metaphorically shaft gamers once again. Hopefully people will respond and stop buying into their abusive consumer practices.

@Darknight765 @zenstrata Actually I do have a choice, I can simply not purchase their products. I have already begun to do this. Over the last two years I have greatly reduced my game consumption. If this trend continues there is a good chance I may stop gaming completely and invest instead in other hobbies.

@zenstrata You really don't have a choice. just about every game that isn't backed by a big name publisher that is half decent will get bought and the follow sequel will be crap. You will buy it just hoping this one time EA didn't screw it up just to be disappoint again.

@Kingfish1982 It's not just about the crappy games they make but the crappy decisions too. No gaming company has taken more strides in implementing policies that screw over video game consumers than EA. For those practices alone it deserves to at least be the worst video game company in America.

I remember back in PS1/PS2 era, when EA actually made great games. They used to make really great titles like 007 nightfire, Everything or nothing, Def Jam vendetta and alot more. Now they're just the scam of the video games industry, nickel & diming gamers with every game released this gen and stripping away alot of great features that made the game franchise so great in the first place. Is it really worth it, EA? Go back to your old self, back when game quality mattered to you.

what's sad is while EA may be the worst gaming related company, there are plenty of businesses that are way more unethical or downright evil then EA.

What's even more sad is most of you derps will still throw $60 plus every little dlc pack at them when the next biowhare game or battlefield comes out....
