EA Cancels Black Panther Game, Closes Its Developer, And Lays Off Additional Staff

EA is cancelling Black Panther and closing its developer, Cliffhanger.

Electronic Arts has confirmed it's cancelling its upcoming Black Panther game and closing its developer. Cliffhanger Games, which was only opened in 2023 to make the Black Panther game, is now shuttered. EA previously signed a deal with Marvel for multiple games, and an Iron Man title is still coming.

EA boss Laura Miele said in a memo obtained by IGN that the company is cancelling the game and closing the studio to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities."

EA's Black Panther game is not going forward.
EA's Black Panther game is not going forward.

Additionally, EA is laying off staff on its mobile and "central" teams, though the exact number of affected staff is unknown. This follows on from a previous round of layoffs in April that affected around 300 people and led to the reported cancellation of a Titanfall game.

"These decisions are hard," Miele said in a memo to staff. "They affect people we've worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them-- including finding opportunities within EA, where we've had success helping people land in new roles."

In 2024, EA laid off nearly 700 people and said it wasn't sure how much more it would invest in licensed IP going forward. Due to this commentary, some wondered if any of EA's Marvel projects would be affected. EA previously signed a multi-game deal with Marvel, and now, the only confirmed project from that partnership is a new Iron Man game from Motive Studio. When the deal was announced, EA said it covered at least three games.

Cliffhanger was led by Kevin Stephens, who oversaw the production of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War at Monolith Productions. He joined EA in 2021. Other members of the team at Cliffhanger worked on Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.

It is unknown how far along in development the Black Panther game was. When the game and the studio were announced in 2023, EA said the game was "still in early development with a long road ahead." EA and Cliffhanger were attempting to make what they said was a "definitive and authentic Black Panther experience."

Outside of EA's superhero games, Warner Bros. was making a Wonder Woman game based on the iconic DC character, but that game was also canceled.

Going forward, Miele said that EA would focus on Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends, while development will continue on Iron Man and the next Star Wars: Jedi game. EA's mobile game projects remain intact, while BioWare continues to make the next Mass Effect as well. And of course, EA's sports catalog will continue as well, including EA Sports FC, Madden, College Football, and NHL.

Despite all of EA's recent layoffs and closures, the company's headcount continues to grow. As of March 2025, EA had more than 800 additional people on staff than it did the same time a year prior.

EA is making these dramatic cuts and closures as the company rakes in money. For the last three months alone, EA pulled in $1.9 billion in revenue and made a profit of $254 million. For the latest fiscal year, however, EA's revenue slid from $7.562 billion to $7.463 billion, with net profit falling from $1.273 billion to $1.121 billion.

I was bummed at first, but then I found out the narrative designer of this studio was a racist who openly admitted to have hired people based on color. Good riddance.

Industry is correcting after way over inflating during covid. Way too many people were hired which inevitably was going to lead to gigantic layoffs since the industry was never going to have the success it had during covid when everyone was a hermit crab and having to stay in their homes with all the time in the world to play games. People shocked and angered by what's happening to the industry shouldn't be surprised with this.

Good. Less Marvel is good. Licensed IP hasn't made for good video games since that 7-Up logo platformer on the Sega Genesis.

There are many reasons why EA Origin is my least-used App for PC games, and why I haven't bought an EA game since 2019.

Canceling projects people wanted is one of them. Along with...

1. Destroying games that sell well because they can't sell an ass ton of DLC (Dead Space...)
2. Getting rid of game IPs like My Sims, Skate, and Medal of Honor for god knows what reason.
3. Destroying anything singleplayer with knuckleheaded moves to save money (We all can name a few).
4. Ruining their contract with Disney for Star Wars games. With Disney calling EA, and I quote, "Too greedy to handle their IPs". Which is like having Satan say you're too defiant.
5. Ignoring the fanbase is more than a man who can't see, hear, taste, or smell.
6. Making sports games so bad. That I swear, literally any game dev under the sun could do better.
7. Having arguably the least amount of content per game out of any triple-A studio in the world.
8. Having writing so bland a 4th grader with dyslexia could write something more juicy.
9. Catering to a fanbase that's pretty much their own headcanon.
10. And having literally the most cringeworthy game conferences ever, even back in the day.
11. Having the worst CEOs in all of business.
12. Screwing up the Star Wars IP and pretty much doing nothing with it outside of 3 battlefront fails. And a Star Fighter game that was too little, too late.
13. Making the Next SKATE game literally an early access nightmare instead of just making a proper 4.
14. Spending 8 years making a bad ass "Destiny Ironman Simulator" that ended being a nothing burger.
15. And releasing the worst BF game we had ever, while it was multiplayer only (Mind you, Multiplayer only games are insanely easy to make, in comparison to ones that have a singleplayer mode. Ask any game dev who has made both.)

The comments are funny, not many people have looked deeper into the company and staff before saying it "sucks" or "CEOs gotta eat" , please educate yourself, the devs were openly racist and obviously that became an issue as people were employed based on skin color rather than experience.

@snakeyes646: You're right. The dev's associate narrative designer was a former employee of Sweet Baby Inc., one named Dani Lalonders, the same one who openly bragged about not hiring white people.

Well that sucks I really don't care much about iron man other than Robert Downey Jr doing a good job with the role in the movies. I would play the heck out of a good Black Panther game though. I know another is coming out but I don't like Captain America either. Think they canceled the wrong one.

Considering this is the studio with the dev who bragged about not hiring white people, I'd say EA is saving themselves from a flop and (maybe) a future lawsuit lol.

Nobody gives a * about the developers being racist? Are you serious? How have we gotten so low as a society? Racism should not be acceptable in any shape or form.

This is ban worthy in my eyes.

Smh. So done with EA dude. No black panther? No Titanfall 3? No battlefront 3? I stopped playing battlefield since that sorry follow up of battlefield 1 called battlefield v. And the Star wars Jedi games just aren't that good to me. Unless I play them once every year maybe. Madden and college football are ok but man, the Xbox 360 and the PS4 were my favorite generations. I fear I'll never get thrills I got from those days again.

EA here is some solid advice for you.

Get Motive to make another Survival Horror game; doesn't even need to be Dead Space (though I'm not against a Dead Space game).

They've clearly got the talent for it.

@RSM-HQ: As much as I love the survival horror genre, horror is one of the few genre's that come from the heart. So you can't just ask a bunch of people to volunteer to develop a horror game. Dead Space was all Glen and EA ain't cut from that cloth.

That's why the best ones come from Japan, horror (yokai) is part of their culture.

@OGKNav: From my understanding Motive wanted to do another Dead Space game, the remake was highly praised and successful, and EA still told them no.

@RSM-HQ: how they can be so quiet after such a successful remake of a beloved game is wild. Why is it so hard to just give the people what they want and be renowned for making quality games? Capcom got the message and ran with it, EA could have revived Deadspace in exactly the same way as Capcom did with RE. Full remakes of 2 & 3, plus development of a new instalment. Guaranteed gold surely.

@snakeyes646: I think I like Eternal more, but I like The Dark Ages more than 2016. I replayed 2016 right before starting The Dark Ages, and it's still good, but feels a little slow and simplistic compared to either of the later games.

I'm actually having fun playing DOOM: The Dark Ages and its better than Eternal for sure, but the music/heavy metal is very lackluster due to the absence of Mick Gordon.

Yeah and to be honest, the premises of EA's Black Panther didn't sound too promising from what was leaked, not to mention, the developers didn't have a clean slate on their portfolio to say the least. But still had hoped to learned more about it but oh well, the development certainly ended on a Cliffhanger.

Considering 1943 rise of Hydra is coming out with Black Panther as one of the Main Protaganist I can understand the hesitation of coming out with another AAA Black Panther game in a relatively short time span.

@drod0756: That's under Embracer group who's doing 1943 Rise of Hydra, and I doubt EA felt pressure by it but since Cliffhanger has a bed reputation, I think EA did the right thing by cancelling it.
